wtf? there's a difference between semantics and actually saying you did something you didn't do.

It's amazing how people can turn a thread into an argument on the basis of arguing the toss over things they've not read correctly.

Take my post:
I don't recall the @PeeEyeEmPee post that I quoted saying we were going to finish 6th.
and then change the [admittedly incorrect, hence my concession of the semantic argument] "that I quoted" wording to "that I was [clearly] referring to", and you have the correct semantics for what I intended to say. The thrust of which isn't changed at all. You dimwit.

edit: and now going on a neg-rep rampage

Sorry, will retract my Winner rating above if you like?

The use of a personal insult is always the marker of the intellectual high ground

Funny how I'm the "dimwit" though, as you're clearly trying to argue the toss about a point you would still be incorrect on, even with "semantics" involved:

It sounds like you are brainwashed by your own bias then. We are NOT title contenders, and will finish closer (points-wise) to 6th than we do 1st

Maybe a simple "Oops, didn't see that" might have been a bit more productive than a snarky passive-aggressive comment?

Reading comprehension ahoy. I said that - quote- "@PeeEyeEmPee's prediction for this season lines up closer to the final standings in 2017/18 than a title challengers prediction." Which it does, because in 2017/18 we finished closer to 6th than we did 1st. I was simply making the point that PeeEyeEmPee's opinion that we'll finish closer to 6th that we will to 1st this year can't be automatically dismissed as pessimism, because that exact thing happened as recently as last season. I didn't make any other point, nor any predictions for this season myself. I can't help it if you want to extrapolate from that and argue points that I wasn't making.

If you want to discuss it further, I suggest taking this to PM, but I don't know how much clearer I can make it.

EDIT - and PeeEyeEmPee's post STILL doesn't say we'll finish 6th ("closer to 6th than we do to 1st"), so I still don't get what you could be arguing against?

Last season we finished 23 points short of 1st, and 14 points clear of 6th, so @PeeEyeEmPee's prediction for this season lines up closer to the final standings in 2017/18 than a title challengers prediction...

Yes, we might well get left behind by City again, but we'll be near 2/3 as opposed to around 6th, if recent seasons under Poch are anything to go by.

Some people are overly negative though.

You're all making predictions like they are fact. Can we just enjoy the start of the season, we're 1 game in FFS

If you don't like predictions then I suggest you should start a new thread where people can enjoy the start of the season.

I think if we all predict 2nd-4th it will be fine. When realists say it as they see it, it becomes an issue. I voted 5th based on our transfer activity. We were hanging on in the last 3 games and were close to 5th at a point... People have short memories.

But we've been title contenders in recent seasons, how the fuck am I biased...
No, we really haven’t. Last season we were a country mile away from City, and the league was over as a contest from around Christmas time the season before. We didn’t even contend in the Leicester season either, we were just best of the rest....and then ballsed that up too.

Can you read? I’ve said we would finish closer to 6th, points-wise, than 1st. Whether that’s 2nd, 3rd (although I highly doubt that), or 4th, 5th is a different story altogether, but we will not be contending for the title.

I'm not too worried... Just caught up with the highlights from the weekend. We beat Newcastle while barely at match fitness. Man City won relatively easily, but against a frankly atrocious Arsenal. Liverpool played a shite West Ham, and it's even easier to win when you're allowed to score when half a mile offside.

Man Utd will remain inconsistent. If you ask me Chelsea are probably the strongest challengers to City; new manager, reinvigorated squad and two good squad additions. They always do well when they get a new manager in his first season.

I think that the transfer window is such a distraction. With the exception of Chelsea, I think it'll be as you were this season.

I thought it was a great result all things considered last weekend and as good a start to a season as you would hope. Then I come in here and I realise we are likely to get relegated. More fool me huh

Was Feeling pretty negative about this season but the win on sat has given me a bit more confidence that we'll be in the mix. I think that was a tough start and we were no where near ready. It'll take a few weeks for key players to get up to speed so If we can grind out points at this stage that's all we can ask for really.

No! We didn't sign any players so enjoying Spurs is now verboten.

Think a lot will depend on injuries... if our first xi stays fit and in form - i can see us in top3 - if not i can see us outside top4
We have no cover for Eriksen, Kane and have injuryprone players in CM

Hope we add fresh blood in Jan window but can't see it myself

So exactly the same as last year then, and the year before funnily enough.

Adding Moura and Lamela into the mix on an attacking front who barely featured last season is huge for us too and definitely gives us further depth than we had at the beginning of last season.

CM is a concern for sure - there is no denying that. Im not going to pretend that bringing youth through is going to solve our issues there but if, and it is a big if, we can use the players we do have in that position and at least one of our best CMs can stay fit at a time then we might just be OK.

The teams around us have strengthened and strengthened more than us every year for the last 3 or 4 and yet we have still managed to out do all of them at one point or another. Man City are on another planet right but i cannot see the logic in some thinking that we are a team in a worse position that the rest.

Liverpool have an easy start, which is annoying as they'll get a media bandwagon behind them (even more if thats possible). What we need is them tripping up against some of the teams they are expected to beat.
