Now usually I like Ian Wright (even though ex-goner) and his infectious passion for England in particular, but think he's wrong to bring race into it here.

Personally for me, Sterling pisses me off as he is so crap for England and yet suddenly a World Beater when playing for City again this season.

Yes I know City probably have a better quality players around him, but that doesn't excuse some of the opportunities he completely fluffed during the World Cup.

And the media probably did play a part as have been hammering him in recent times but he's never been that much kop for England really tbh even before they started sectioning him out more (and likes of Rooney, Terry, going back further Gazza, have all had their own share really).

Thing is the media don’t only attack his ability or performance.

They regularly attack his character with no basis whatsoever. It does point towards possible racism.

Bullshit. He played way below the expectations at the WC. Could also be that the Liverpool loving media are still butthurt that he left the greatest club in existance for Man Shitty.

But Wright states that the football criticism is something every player gets but attacks on their character is not.

So I fail to see how his performance is relevant to what Wright is saying.

Sterling has been attacked for buying his mum a house, shopping at Primark, buying cheap flight tickets , buying expensive flight tickets as well as a huge amount of other nonsense.

So Sterling’s performance levels are really not relevant to the point Wright was making.

So why aren't Danny Welbeck and Danny Rose being attacked for such things if the reason is racism?

Picking on him where he buys his clothes (Primark) and the tattoo of a rifle he had done pre-wc. Looks like they're out of things to pluck and pick that they go after his family also (Mother's new house).
He had a good season imo for Manchester City and of course the press had high hopes for him at the WC (we all did), but he fell short, but that does not allow the media to go after him and only him alone. You have a lot of players who comes out of the WC looking like stars and when they go to a new club afterwards, they're shite (El Hadji Diouf i.e.)

I thought he was a greedy fecker when he left Liverpool. His contract and wages said it all, but that's what I think of his loyalty towards Liverpool, the club who gave him an oportunity to show what a great talent he is and not him personally to attack

The thing with Danny is that he runs his mouth all over the press. He welcomes the opportunity to speak out in the media about matters. He's not like Sterling who keeps his mouth closed

I think criticising a player for joining the best club in the country which comes with a pay rise is a bit strange.

Sterling wasn’t brought through the Liverpool youth system. He had no more reason to stay at Liverpool then he did for staying at QPR.

Some interesting replies, which is what I was interested to see what other people made of it.

I still don't personally agree that it's racism as likes of David Beckham have received similar hounding and I don't feel colour needs to be bought into it.

They've also enjoyed hounding Wayne Rooney (although admittedly he deserves it lol).

Yes you could accuse the press of unfairly treating him but just because he's black it's racist?

That's what our press do sadly, they lock onto someone and hound them.

He was offered a £100k a week at Liverpool to stay on back in 2015. Imo a lot of money for a 20 yrs old player. He made £35k before the new offer. But what's done is done. Football and wages have since then all gone out the window of what is reasonable to give :)

British media is the worst imo. The Sun leaving bottles of booze on Gazza's stairs just to have something to write about.

True but often there is some basis for it.

Rooney shagged grannies. Beckham got us kicked out of a World Cup.

What had Sterling done?

He always comes across really well. Seems a strange character to attack for personality.

Whether it is racism or not I have no idea but he is being baselessly attacked constantly.

Well, Beckham also shagged the nanny..

Sure but that was much later.

He was an original media darling. He then got sent off against Argentina and was mercilessly hounded by the press.

It was very wrong but happened for a reason.

Sterling’s vilification is completely baseless which makes you question why he is being attacked.

It's Ian Wright. Hardly the brightest, bless him. Along with Robbie Savage, it's a mystery to me why anyone would pay for this guy's "insights" into the game.

He should follow the Sky Sports pundit model: state the bleeding obvious while jumping on the bandwagon of the week. Works wonders for our Jamie, Neville, Gobby-Scouse and the rest of them.
