Ramos prepared to cast net wide

Tottenham's England hopefuls grabbed the goals against Wigan on Sunday - but Juande Ramos insists there will be no homegrown favouritism.

Spurs have taken great pride in their policy of recruiting British talent such as Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent - all of whom were on the scoresheet in a 4-0 win at White Hart Lane.

Ramos was appointed a fortnight ago and the Spaniard has been linked with a host of players from La Liga, but he will not be looking for players from any particular countries.

"In today's football you don't need to look at passports or identity cards," he said.

"What we are going to be looking for is quality players. I'm trying to get players who are going to be playing well for my team regardless of their nationality."

Ramos is unbeaten in his four games in charge and the straightforward win over managerless Wigan moved them up to 14th in the Premier League.

Robbie Keane made the opener by embarrassing Andreas Granqvist on the byline and crossing for Jenas to tap home.

Jenas added the second when he made a run from deep and rounded goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, then Lennon added a third before the break with a skidding volley.

Bent came off the bench to add the fourth, his fourth of the season.

Jenas said on Sky Sports News: "We know we are a top side and belong up there but the league table is telling us differently so it's up to us now to keep churning out performances like that and climb the table."

Dimitar Berbatov set up two goals and his flicks and tricks were coming off, just days after making a statement in response to reports he is unsettled.

It has been suggested that the Bulgarian would want Champions League football next season. Ramos wants him at White Hart Lane.

"I hope until the end of the season he will make a decision and hopefully he will stay," Ramos said.

Wigan moved down a place to 19th and will need their new manager to get to work quickly.

Paul Jewell has been linked with a return, with caretaker boss Frank Barlow emphasising the need for a swift appointment - as long as the right man is found.

"I think the chairman is aware of that," he said.

"Everyone in football knows you can't control the accelerator pedal in situations like that. I'm sure the chairman is doing everything he can."

sounds promising...

Good. A good player is a good player. I don't care if he's English or Scottish or Spanish or a Zulu warrior, if he is better than what we have then I want him at the club. We have enough decent-good English players, it's time we started bringing in proper quality from any nation we can find them from.

Lets look at it retrospectivly.
A lot of fans have been on the backs of this english spine for some time.
Dawson, Jenas, Lennon and most certainly Bent/Defoe.

Its clear the english thing isn't working, yeah its not done us bad, but the last time we were pretty decent was when we had Carrick - lets recruit from the northpole if it gets us better players!!!

Zulu player would be awesome though

Villa are the latest to have a go at the English / British spine concept. I personally agree that there ought to be a domestic element to the team, not just the squad for all the reasons bespoke to English style football.

The continental style can still be inplemented if encouraged from a young age - as we are doing with our Academy.

Every top 4 side bar the scum obviously has an English element in their team. Man Yoo with Rio Scholes Rooney, Chelski with Lumplard, Terry, Cole etc etc. I think it is important to have English players at the club but not at the expensive of bringing in a better player that just happens to be foreign

yeah i know mate, and i am not sayin we should get rid of it. Robbo when he was on form, King brings the best out of Daws. But yeah since MC left it does seem to be falling apart. And now to get English players you have to pay £16.5mill for them!
