Ahhhh those European nights at WHL. All white kit, the welsh wing wonder, flimsy opposition that melts under the superior strength English floodlights, jumpers for goalp..........

Not quite a classic. First 30 minutes were good. Given oodles of time and space Carroll and Hudd pinged it about a bit, got wingers (especially Bale) into good positions, wasted most of them with poor delivery, but created one cracking chance deftly finished by Defoe.

Then Maribor decided to take part for ten minutes, Naughton reminded us of the pitfalls of playing RB's at LB and by the miracle of football we found ourselves level.

Bale was his lively best tonight, still wasted too much, but constantly tested and tormented their RB, and created two goals with very good balls in.

Carroll was excellent for the most part, constantly keeps moving and continually showing for the ball, gets all over the pitch and tonight even got a foot in a couple of times. Played it short but plays with his head up and also can open up and spray it diagonally occasionally too. Played a sweet little ball in for Defoe for the second goal. Well played kid.

Huddlestone played well for the first 30 minutes, then took a 50 minute breather, started doing his typical second half shenanigans. Perfect example of which was the 67 min when defender has the ball and he literally places an opponent between himself and the defender and points. I watched him a lot this game and second half he was really blowing hard, constantly actively avoiding the ball and doing a lot of pointing. He did play a good first time bal for Bale to run onto to set up Defoe for the third but it was his first tangible contribution of the second half.

Massive difference tonight was also Adebayor. It's so noticeable having a fulcrum, someone who drops and works the channels, bringing others all around him into the game. It meant we retained possession so much more, probably 20 times more than when Defoe is up top, thats 20 more moves that can develop into something more than a wasted ball forward.

That said Defoe scored three sweet goals tonight. Almost enough to make you forget the plethora of great chances Defoe's wasted in recent games whilst touching the ball about 5 times. But not quite.

It's the hat rick boy that needs dropping for the next couple of games. Hope AVB has the cahooners.

Ratings:

Lloris 5 - fuck all to do, sold short by Naughton for the goal but could have done better. Gets out quick.

walker 6.5 - Didn't really contribute much going forward. Even on a piss easy night defensively still had a couple of wobbly moments. I really think we should stick Naughton over their for a couple of games and see how he goes.

Dawson 7.5 - Good game.

Vertonghen 7 - Decent game.

Naughton 6 - Just looks like a RB playing LB. was Ok apart from his back pass blunder, but no more and wasn't really tested.

Lennon 6.5 - He's clean through, he has three choices, shoot, roll it easily right to the unmarked Dempsey or try the impossible pass through two defenders to Adebayor. Guess what he does. Really didn't produce much of quality tonight.

Carroll 8 - Constantly moving, saw lots of ball, passed short, long and incisive. Even got his foot in a few times. has looked a bit lightweight on previous occasions but was MOTM for me tonight. Not every game will be this easy for him.

Hudderlstone 7 - He's caught the Poyet virus from Robbie Keane. Otherwise known as hide from the ball and point vigorously. 35th minute Hudd was on the ball with Defoe and bale steaming for through balls. Hudd dwelt, didn't see either. If he could make that ball you might forgive the fact that he disappears for long stretches and plays with his legs filled with cement. He was OK tonight for the first 30 and last 10. In between was lots of hidey pointy and blowing hard, in a very easy game.

Bale 7.5 - Very lively, two great balls for goals and one brilliant chip for Adebayor. Did waste several very good positions as well.

Adebayor 7.5 - Movement, hold up. It was movement and hold up that began the third goal. Good game, deserved a goal.

Defoe 7.5 - Decent game. Took all three goals very well.

Agree with all of that BC.

The two things of note for me that have been missing from just about every game this season has been someone from midfield constantly wanting the ball from the back four, and someone further forward who can bring the midfield into play. Enter Tom Carroll and Emmanuel Adebayor. Look how many times we got the wingers into good areas by just moving out from the back four quicker. Carroll kept his passing simple, but the tempo of which he passed it was what really got us going. Cracking performance from the little man. My MOM as well.

Agree with that BC. Caroll and Ade made a huge difference. It will be interesting to see what AVB does for the City game.

We look so much better playing with Ade. He's such a handful and makes space for our other players by occupying at least 2 defenders at once.

Lloris 5 - Should have done better with a crap back pass. The players need to remember that he is left-footed and pass accordingly.

Walker 6.5 - Got forward well, but end product was so-so

Dawson 7 - Fine

Vertonghen 6 - Very silly challenge on the edge of the area. A very long way from being our new Ledley. Watch Leldey clips (in his prime) he never slid in...

Naughton 6 - A right back, not left. Shit back pass to Lloris

Lennon 7 - Worked hard. Ordinary end product.

Hudd 6 - Frustrating. Some good long balls.

Carroll 8 - This could be his big start. Nothing to say that in a few weeks, if Dembele is still out, he could partner Sandro in the prem.

Bale 8 - Destroyed their left back.

Ade 8 - Fuck me it was good to see him back. Has to start at '9' or '10' against City. No question. Surely AVB now sees this.

Defoe 8 - Quality finishing. Two right, one left.

Personally, I would liked to have seen Bale and Lennon taken off after the 3rd goal for more of a rest, as well as more of a chance for Falque and Mason.

Carroll was great but I have resevations about him starting games in the prem. He is much more lightweight than Modric. If he was built like a man he would be pushing for the first team without a doubt. Reminds me of Paul Scholes.

Even though I'm happy we won the match I'm not so Happy that Defoe scored a hat trick. It puts AVB under pressure to start him against City when Adebayor showed against Maribor what we've been missing all season. Before anyone says it we can't play 442 and Ade is does not have the discipline to track back in the number 10 role.

BC about has got it right. Good to get a win even if we made hard work of it at times.
Positives were Defoe's finishing and hard work, Ade's 90 minutes, Bale near his best, Carroll's all round performance, better than Huddlestone IMO, and Lennon's defensive work which was much better than I expected.
Other points: Lloris needs to play a few games on the trot to get his confidence up; until BAE is fit Vertonghen has to play LB with two from Caulker, Gallas and Dawson in CM. Huddlestone does not know how to defend properly, several times he tried to anticipate a pass which was not made and found himself out of position and by-passed.
Most of the problems last night were self inflicted, over playing at the back, especially passing to a man who already had an opponent covering him. Clearly Lloris and Naughton were guilty of this for the goal, but Huddlestone was also doing this far too often.
Stil a win is a win, and generally it was a good performance.

Adebayor and Bale stand outs for me. Carroll and Hudd did well but it really was a powder puff midfield they were up against.

That "4-4-2" with Ade as a pivot could really work at home to most teams if we swapped Hudd/Carroll for Dembele and Sandro/Parker.

Poor old Hugo. That clusterfuck between him and Naughton basically gives AVB free rein to keep Friedel as number 1 until at least Christmas.

Adebayor HAS to start against City.

Dawson 7.5 - Good game.

Kudos to you BC, I was hoping you would recognise this in your rating. Putting the (lack of)quality of opposition to one side, I thought Dawson looked very comfortable on the ball, his long range passes weren't hoofs, they were diagonal passes to Bale especially in the first half, him and Vertonghen barely gave Maribor a sniff.

I still think this guy can play a big part for us, it's wrong that he has been totally castigated, especially as there hasn't even been any sign of this fabled 'high defensive line' that AVB is apparently famous for.

Not sure I would give him an 8. I thought he was quite negative at times - particularly in the first half - when there wasn't much opposing pressure on him and a more attacking pass could have been easily played.

I understand that he's still young and he must have been bricking it slightly considering our recent home form, but I'm not ready to start jizzing myself about this lad yet. Potential yes. MOTM performance... for me, no.

My MOTM would be Bale. Up against a pretty poor defender, but I thought he showed penetration and willing for the majority of the game. It's what we expect of him, but at least he went out there and did it. More of the same against City please.

I still find it amazing that Walker can have a poor game against such poor opposition! I saw him make a couple of clever track backs to prevent a pass, but beyond that his lack of footballing intelligence is becoming painful to watch.

Totally agree and if I'm being honest I think I would like to see him back in the side - I think he offers much better leadership as well.

Exactly the points i made after the Wigan game, we needed someone to do the Modric role and be constantly on the move and looking to push the game forward. Hudd just doesn't do it, he sits way too deep and plays the game far too slow. Carroll was the difference last night and for me man of the match. Defoe played well and took his goals and Bale was made to look even better by playing aginst a poor RB, but he looked dangerous and in the mood. I actually thought Ade came too deep at times as there were a number of occasions where Bale got free and went to pull the ball back with ade still in the centre circle. All in though it was a good performance bar the customary 5 minute wobble - and Naughton (who played well) should know better than to play a ball across your box, especially when they have a striker goal side of your other defenders. Lloris could have hit it first time but he should never have been put in that position in the first place.

Good night last night.

I enjoyed the game and thought we played well.

I am glad to see us passing the ball about again.

I thought we started the game very well, Bale was so good, causing all kinds of problems on that left side. That touch when he just brought it down from the air was just so class.

We finally got the goal which had been coming from a long time and then we seemed to let Maribor start to come into the game a bit. Good job they were not that good. They were okay on the ball though and were not the worse side I have seen.

What a class little player that Carol is I thought he had a very good game last night. His vision and passing is so good.

What a silly ball from Naughton for there goal. Lloris should of done better but tried to be a bit fancy I think.

2nd half we dominated. I thought we passed the ball about very nice and scored three wonderful goals.

Lloris-6,not much to do but gets down quick, keeps the ball going, unlucky for the goal, silly ball from naughton

Walker-6 did ok.

Vertoghen-6.5 done well, did get done once annd nearly come flying in but done well.

Dawson- 7 have to admit he had a good game. Some lovely balls diagonally that he must work on. He did not have to defend much but he kept the ball well and done the nice simple balls which was good and did not just wack it when he got the ball.

Naughton-5 looked shaky. Got done a few times and let the cross get in. Stupid ball for the goal.

Lennon-7 worked hard, made some good runs but wasted alot of chances where he should of either shot or just gave it away. worked hard though.

Hudd-6.5 done ok actually, but still slows the game down to much and needs so much time on the ball to move his body. Done some good things though, some good balls, nice chip I think for one of the goals.

Caroll-8 what a class little player, some moves the ball about the pitch so nice. Technically gifted player.

Bale-7.5 good game, that first half he was immense, he was doing so much, nice little touches going on great runs, beating every player, crossing the ball in well. Good to see him get a little rest as he must of been knackered. Very good
game.

Ade-7.5 - made the difference, the way he can just hold up the ball, link up play, great touch for the third goal, shame he wasted quite a few decent chances

defoe 7.5- took the goals very well did.

Impressed with all the youngsters he brought on and think they look very promising for the future. Caroll, mason and Falque.

I wouldn't give Bale MOM, it was easy for him and although he played well, and provided two great assists, I thought he was wasteful with his final ball too often last night and his decision making could of been better. I'm also convinced he was aiming for Adebayor at the back stick for Defoe's first goal.

All that said he did play well just not MOM for me.

Yes, I'm on board with this. Carroll was decent, you factor into it he's young as well. I thought he actually showed quite a few glimpses of poor technique when striking the ball a few times, he seemed to not be able to strike the ball properly on a few occasions. I like him, he reminds me of the Carrick type of player, hopefully he continues to improve. As for throwing him into a midfield battle against some of the best in the league at the Etihad or even the following week against the Gooners? For me. No chance.

IMO we should just empower Carroll and tell him he's Dembele's understudy.

Plenty of other clubs blood youngsters early and we always seem to lag on that front. I think he offers plenty in that kind of role and last night will have only brought his confidence on. We're on a hiding to nothing at Man City anyway so why not try him? (Ok, ok... depending on our injury situation. I'd prefer him alongside Sandro than Livermore though)

Agree, put him in for Gallas who just simply starting to look like his age has caught up with him.
