I'd like to single out Dembele as I thought he showed some real class last night.

I really like him playing centrally in behind the striker. It was a mucky pitch, nasty conditions and he still managed to show some absolutely ridiculous skills at times. Slalomed his way past 3 or 4 players with ease, quick feet, strength. Glorious to watch.

Sadly his final shot was lacking when he tried it and besides the pass to Harry Kane early in the 2nd half which HK mis-controlled and shot wide, his final ball wasn't great either. We know this about Dembele. However, I think there is definitely room to start playing him more regularly in this position. He is FAR better there than in the deeper CM positions IMO.

I'm hoping if he is given more time playing off of the front man, then we could see him develop his game a bit more and maybe even get a few more goals.

Beyond that, thought Stambouli and Mason did a great job in the middle 2 and Davies kept Campbell-Rice quiet all evening. Kane was also superb, great assist, just didn't quite have his shooting boots on.

Vorm - 7 - Did ok, not at fault for either goal & the early drop was dodgy but beyond that he did his job.
Walker - 6.5 - Kept getting too tight to their winger and both goals came from his side. Maybe tried a little too hard.
Dier - 7.5 - solid
Verts - 7 - Thought he went to ground far too early on lead up to 2nd goal but player well overall.
Mason - 7.5 - flew into tackles, tidy passing, touch let him down a couple of times late in game when he could've got in on goal
Stambouli - 8 - Played great I thought. Tidy passing, good covering, solid tackling.
Lamela - 7 - Some nice 1-touch passing but not decisive enough at times. Worked hard.
Dembele - 8 - retained ball really well high up pitch. Some great skill. Needs to work on final shot/pass.
Eriksen - 9 - stunning free kick. ridiculously calm finish on 2nd goal. A little genius.
Kane - 8 - grafted his ass off as usual. Plenty of shots, unlucky not to score. Beautiful pass for the assist.

Paulinho - 7 - neat and tidy with his passing.
Townsend - 6.5 - didn't really affect game a great deal.
Rose - N/A - not enough time for it to matter.

Eriksen was my MoM for making the difference.

I thought we lost a bit when Lamela came off since he with CE, of course, were at the heart of some good one touch passing with intelligent movement. We lost a bit of nous and edge then. However I see why he was taken off having only just come back from injury.

Mostly a competent performance but yes we do lack that killer touch. This though I hope will come in time as we get more consistent and perhaps find that striker...as Chelsea have done with Coast...that will give a cutting edge to the good build up play

Good to very good first half, nearly undone by our work in the second...

As I said last night, I thought the first half was possibly the most professional performance I can recall from a Spurs team. I know it was a League One team we were up against, but in tricky conditions, a boggy pitch and a vociferous crowd, we got the ball down from the first minute and managed to take any sting out of the game, the crowd went quiet, and we patiently went about creating a number of chances. The times they did get the ball we were energetic in our closing down and strong in the tackle, right across the park. If it hadn't been for decision making and execution letting us down in front of goal then we could have been 4 or 5 goals to the good. Apart from the finishing it was hard to ask for any more from that half.

The second half was a strange one. We kept creating regular chances, and people can say their goals came out of nowhere, but I still think warning signs were there... For me, right from the start of the half we didn't show the same composure as we did in the first 45 mins. In the first 10 mins of the second half we were guilty of giving the ball away, and I counted four or five time where we were diving in to silly tackles all of a sudden, resulting in a couple of bookings, and just generally giving them a sniff of getting in to the match. As things wore on the shape went, not helped by the substitutions, and we lost even more composure... For instance the fullbacks started getting caught ahead of the game, even at 1-1 in the match. Inexplicable. Panic set in and we were lucky to not see any further damage. Kane and Eriksen combined, yet again, though to finally put away one of the many chances though... And we all could breathe again.

That match probably sums us up over the last couple of seasons. At times some really good stuff, but when things go wrong they seem to go very wrong!

Vorm - Seems more Friedel than Lloris when it comes to taking responsibility. Didn't inspire confidence.

Walker - Standard Walker, I'm afraid. I'd like a new right back.

Dier - I know he hasn't had the sternest of tests yet, but I'm seriously impressed with the kid and the composure he shows. For me, the shirt is his and he deserves a run of games.

Vertonghen - Decent game, started getting dragged out of the centre though when we were having the meltdown.

Davies - Ok. Towards the end lost his head though, at times caught ahead of the game for no reason at all.

Stambouli - For an hour, was a very good shift. Broke up play, showed energy, used the ball well. Didn't really notice him though as the game entered the final stages.

Mason - Much the same as Stambouli. First half put in a real shift in the engine room. Still noticeable, yet slightly less effective further forward, although he nearly got on in after a couple of surging runs forward. Still needs to be more precise at crucial moments, his miscontrol when through on goal being one example.

Lamela - Worked hard. Took up good positions. Pretty good game. Final ball, like others, let him down a few times.

Dembele - Carried ball well. This was one of his games where he looked completely unfazed by it all and the ball was glued to his foot almost and he looked a serious player. Still needed to add some purpose and actual output to these dribbles though, even if it carried us up the pitch well.

Eriksen - Slow first 10-15 mins, after that got into the game and worked hard for the team. Also guilty of a couple of poor choices, but his freekick was exquisite, and the finish at the end was composure personified. Really stepping up to the plate.

Kane - Wasted a lot of chances, but hard to be critical of him. Was a nuisance all night and was popping up everywhere offering an option. Didn't stop running, particularly showing for the ball down the flanks. Great pass for the deciding goal. This was an example of a player working hard. Great effort.

Paulinho + Townsend - Struggled a bit to get into the game, not helped that the team went through its bad spell.

I like this system of ratings.

On the Lamela rating, he chased down well, there can be little disputing that, but when we had the ball I felt he was poor, giving it away and as is often the case his first touch was not good for such an undoubtedly skillful player.

That was who we played against.

What is your point?

Everyone saying it was Dembele's best game for us this season. It was against League One opposition. Yes, ok it may have been a tough game and it was a game of importance but lets see him doing this in the Premier League!

Just my opinion.

I am not sure that is even an opinion, it's a fact. I think we would all like to see him do that against at least a premier league club, hopefully a good one.

Vorm - 6 - Once he got past his early nerves, he was good. There's no point in expecting him to be Lloris. But he's a reliable goalkeeper.

Walker - 6 - Good in the first half, got caught out by Adams in the second half.

Dier - 7 - Very dependable and capable. Again.

Vertonghen - 6.5 - Good .on and off the ball.

Davies - 6 - Much less troubled by Campbell-Ryce this time, but still looked shaky when attacked with pace. Decent.

Mason - 6.5 - He's one of those players whom one notices by his absence when he goes off or, in this case, when he gets moved out of his best position. Until Dembélé had to go off, Mason was going a great job with Stambouli starving Sheffield United of the ball and winning it back when they had it. Like many others, I thought it was a strange decision to move Mason forward and drop Paulinho back. So that's 7 before the switch and 5.5 afterwards.

Stambouli - 7.5 - Very good match. Protected the defence well, won the ball, passed effectively and made one threatening run forward.

Lamela - 6.5 - Very responsible and hard-working display as an all-round midfielder, but none of his attacks or bits of flair worked. He made a few runs that no one picked up.

Dembele - 8 - An excellent job for the first hour, keeping possession high up the pitch after we won the ball, pushing SU back and thuis nullifying their attempts to get an attacking foothold in the game.

Eriksen - 8.5 - We have a new game-winner. He's not Bale, but he's getting up to the Modric and van der Vaart level in terms of his influence on our results. Even though he played a modest part in our overall play, he still; managed to win the tie nearly on his own.

Kane - 7.5 - Despite his shooting being off in terms of accuracy and judgment, his overall play was excellent. Kept SU pinned back, ran the channels brilliantly and laid on superb pass for Eriksen's second goal.

Paulinho - 5.5 - He didn't do anything obviously wrong, except for reacting slowly for one of SU's goals, but it was plain that we lost control of the midfield .around the time when Dembélé went off.

Townsend - 6 - OK. Not very involved.

Rose - NET

I only saw the last 20 mins of the match; but hell it's a completely diff game i saw compared with what BC says.

They dominated us and if it wasn't for a bad finish when one of their guys blasted over when fed clear in our box it would have been 3-1. Only bright spot for me in those last minutes of the game was Mason's energy (though as ever a combo of lack composure/skill led to nothing) and Ericksen/Kane craft. Without the these 2 I dont know where our season would have been...

Thats why you might think that, the first 70 minutes we were leading and looking comfortable.
