Think this was always going to be this type of game. What we must remember is this is a 2 leg affair and as such many teams even if at home are patient as it is really game 2 that counts. Credit to Nigel Clough and his team, they were extremely hardworking and well organised, and as such played the intelligent game.

Think we looked a bit leggy... and with Chadli being unavailable, I think this is why ade started. Had Lamela and Chadli been available, think we would of seen a different look to the side.

Vorm.... had time for a coffee and fag at times, little to do really, but did what he did do well ......7

Walker..doesnt seem to be as dynamic, few brain farts, but not awful ......6

Dier... Like this dude, seems to be a specialist header, offensively as well, noticed he seems to be picked out a lot ...7

Vertonghen .... Should of been captain, played like he felt that too..good showing......7

Davies.... exposed a lot quietly went about business .....6

Mason.... Looked rusty ....5.5

Stambouli... getting there in a spurs shirt, put a foot in, looking better but didnt stand out either....6

Eriksen.... seeming to be more pro-active and aggressive, not his best game, but still was decent 6.5

Kane... Looked leggy, and not as involved as when playing striker...i like him as a 9/false 9.......6

Townsend... Now did anyone notice the difference tonight? from the match thread i would say no, but i think definitely our stand out player. I think he is thinking more, some lovely crosses, and rather than running down blind alleys, he was occupying defenders and then cuttting in/back and crossing, couple of superb reverse passes too, and generally looked a more thinking player tonight, well done Andros... keep thinking and doing more of it, handled pen well also....7.5

Ade... hmmm 5

Dembele.... did what Dembele usually does ....6

Pauli........6

Soldado... team did look better with him but noy sure why as didnt do much, but nice work with the pen... 6

Well, that was hard work. To watch, as well as to play in. Sheffield United came to stop us playing and they did. 11 men behind the ball for much of the time and very disciplined defending. They scarcely got a sniff of our goal and didn't really deserve one. They just tried to keep us penned back and, as usual against obstinate teams determined to defend at all costs, we didn't have the imgination or speed of foot to overcome that.

Vorm - 6 - No saves, no crosses to claim, no drama of any kind.

Walker - 5.5 - Sound enough, but didn't combine well with Townsend and wasted the ball when attacking.

Dier - 7 - Very good defending, calm and resolute. Arguably MotM.

Vertonghen - 6.5 - A good defensive partner to Dier, but less influential.

Davies - 4.5 - A tough evening, repeatedly exposed against Campbell-Ryce, in part because of lack of support, in part because he lacks pace, but also uninspired in attack. Absolutely nothing useful came down our left.

Stambouli - 7- Another good game, strong in possession, positionally very aware and showing reliable, sometimes constructive passing. Arguably MotM.

Mason - 6 - OK, but never really figured out how to set off attacks against the massed defence. Contributed some good interceptions.

Townsend - 7 - Lots of hard work and our only real threat for much of the match, but was too easily marshalled by two defenders and forced into culs-de-sac. Gets an extra half point for the good penalty. Arguably MotM.

Eriksen - 6.5 - An odd game from Eriksen. He was the only midfielder who really pressed and closed down and he was on the ball a lot, but anything creative or ambitious he tried didn't come off - when not badly inaccurate, his passes would just bang off a defender.

Kane - 6 - Grew into the game as time went on and made some exciting runs, but there was a bad decision at the end of every one.

Adebayor - 5.5 - I though he was OK. Worked hard, occupied defenders, showed wonderful control for his only chance ... and then skied the ball when off balance. Loses a half point for being fortunate to escape a red card.

Dembele - 5 - His progress toward being a more ambitious attacking player seems to have stalled in the past two matches. Didn't influence proceedings.

Soldado - 5.5 - Crowded out and uninvolved. Gets an extra half point for winning the penalty.

Paulinho - 6.5 - Energetic and direct, with one really good attacking pass.

The fullbacks walker and davies were the worst and a huge part of our problems today i think. Not a single cross from any of them all game despite all our possession. Was so mad about the quality of their crosses against sunderland only to see none at all today. Frustrating.

Just noticed that Dier has the most votes for MOTM.
He annoyed me a bit being caught upfield late on. Pleased with him tonight but concentration needs to improve.

Fantastic result. Earlier in the season we were losing to bus parkers -now we are winning. 4 home wins in a row scoring 12 goals-it's all about Andros.
MoPo 10/10 for selections and subs. I agreed with the opening line up and all the subs. All guys subbed not 100% match fit. Big up to Soldado for winning the penalty.
No player played as well as they can but I ain't bovvered. We still were well on top. Thought Stam was great in his role. Verts was superb. Dier looked capable. Walker was more than alright. Davies had a difficult customer to deal with.
I am pleased. They HAVE to score at their gaff. We DEFINITELY will score. They will not score twice.
WE ARE IN THE FINAL !!!!!!!!!!

Thought Pochettino got things wrong today. I've no idea why after Kane was flying at number 9 he's decided to change it and put two blunt strikers into starting 11. Also means Eriksen (our most talented player) is back to left side where he drifts in leaving gaps. It's lop sided and praying he goes back to Kane 9, Eriksen 10. Both though had poor games in terms of touch, passing and involvement ignoring that.
I'd say Mason was rusty but seen him play like that a number of times. I'm yet to be sold on him.
Our full backs had an absolute nightmare, Davies in particular. Rose is by a distance first choice currently.
I'm with you on mason. I'm struggling to see how some love him on here. Yes he loves spurs but so do we. Yes he runs around a lot but so could we ?! Yes he passes it fwd quickly but often with little accuracy (see tonight) I'm just baffled how he has so many fans on here ? Is he the answer ? A 23 year old that offers very few goals, few assists and seems to be bullied against more physical opponents? Nothing personal I just don't get it.

Meanwhile you love Dembele, a 27-year-old with little scope to improve who offers even fewer assists and extremely few goals. He isn't bullied against physical opponents though, I'll accept that. I just don't get it.

Surely you can cut him some slack because he's just come back from an injury. You would if we were talking about Dembele.

I dont get to see the games so I can read from afar and see the results and give perhaps "uninfluenced" input.

We keep winning.

Sheff Utd have beaten 3 or 4 is it Prem teams this season including Soton. They didnt score a goal against us, had bugger all possession and didnt look like scoring according to the Beeb.

Any kind of draw up norf and we are through to a Wembley final and given our record of regularly squeaking one goal wins we must be in good shape to go through.

We are doing something right and Poch continues to give players a chance and gets away with it. Must be learning too.

Complete crap performance all round. Verts the only player who could be happy with their nights work.

Rather than just rate and slate players though, how about we rate the manager?

We only have one way of playing. When that works, say one game in four, we get a decent performance.

When it doesn't (which tbh is more often than not) we have absolutely no idea how to do anything to change it or affect the game.

That I'm afraid is purely down to the manager and this strict adherence at all times to "the philosophy".

It's not enough to just raise fitness levels to allow us to build pressure in the last 15 mins (although it's a good quality to have). We need to see some coherent play, converting possession into actually hurting the opposition, without just relying on Kane or Eriksen to hit one from outside the box.

Yes we're still in the cups and amongst the chasing pack for 4th but performances have generally been poor this season.

Jimbo, is that you?!

Vorm 6 - little to do, made no mistakes

Dier (MoM) 7 - defended well, and our biggest goal threat

Vertonghen 7 - as per Dier, looked solid and composed at the back

Davies 4 - no protection but my God he was poor, tormented by C-Ryce, wayward passing and looked disinterested

Walker 3 - you would think he's never played football in his life... kept forgetting there was a ball on the pitch. He's getting worse not better. Would flog him if a bid game in for circa £15m.

Stambouli 5 - he didn't really impose himself on the game... protected the back 4 reasonably well but got himself in a muddle near our penalty area in the 2nd half, fortunate to get away with it.

Mason 4 - eurgh, hoping it's lack of match sharpness following his injury as his decision making and passing was awful.

Eriksen 5 - nothing really came off for him tonight and his set pieces were poor. Playing out of position didn't help.

Townsend 5 - positive, he scored. negatives - decision making was piss poor as usual, 1st touch was all over the place and he has little to no end product.

Kane 5 - had little service, playing out of position and drifted through the game. Showed some enthusiasm unlike a fair few others.

Adebayor 3 - can't we give him away in a raffle? his inclusion mean't we had to play Kane and Eriksen out of position, thus making us unbalanced and having zero fluidity. He picked up a stupid yellow card, and wasted a glorious opportunity. You expect strikers to score or test the keeper at the very least... in Ade's case, it's a bonus if he gets his shot within 3 yards of the goal lol

Dembele 6 - better than Mason and Stambouli, decent passing and he looked interested. Brought on 20 mins too late.

Paulinho 6 - as per Dembele, he also looked enthusiastic and energetic.

Soldado 5 - his good ball control lead to the penalty, other than that he was anonymous.

Poch 3 - line up, tactics, delayed sub decisions were on a par with Ade and Walkers performance, not good enough by a long shot. You would think we were playing a top prem side by the way we approached the game... flat as a bloody dodo for the best part of 70 mins.

Didn't understand playing Davies over Rose, would've played him Saturday instead. Rose gets forward better and would've provided width. Or play Townsend left, Christian right and let Walker provide width.

Ade wasn't any shitter than anyone else really, service was pretty poor into him.

Too congested, too many poor touches, bad passes and bad decisions made. Mason needs to be more consistent but we must remember he's not been in the team for very long. He's not yet deserving of all the credit he receives much of which he gets when he's absent.

I like Townsend's directness but I'd love someone like Waddle to come in and teach him the artistry of wing play. He needs to learn to slow a defender down and then beat him with a dropped shoulder or step over. Technically talented but decision making is his Achilles....fair play for the pen though and he never stops trying.

We'll still go through but if the manager doesn't have the players for his system he needs to think about altering it to suit who he has got.

Poor performance all round.

Complacency? you would hope not, but very static and slow to spot passes and use the ball all over the pitch, lots of miscontrol too.

As for Mason (6), he was a bit rusty but was still a catalyst for our best move of the match.
Fed the ball into Adebayor's feet and ran through got a return pass and played a first time perfectly weighted pass in-between two defenders for Davies inside the box, who did not make the most with his cross/cutback.

Also I don't know if it becomes a sub conscious thing with a big lump up front but there were far too many long balls up to Ade.(5.5)

The player us well tonight leaving little space in the middle for us to work, and with our lacking intelligence out wide, it meant we were often crowded out in the middle with Kane being robbed numerous times with his head down and people nipping at his heels, and Walker (4.5) and Davies (5) were not provided much (apart from indecision and brain farts)

We won though, and you can have all the atmosphere in the world up there but they still have to beat us (something that better teams than them have struggled to do away from home this season)

Thought Stambo, Dier and Verts were the best of a pretty bad bunch.

Mason, Ade and Davies looked well off the pace - although the latter was left massively exposed by the bizarre system we tried to employ.

Get back to playing Kane upfront and Erik on behind. It works. Arsing about with them floating behind a striker, particularly a striker like Ade, doesn't work and negates all their qualities.

Was my first visit to WHL in four years tonight (for various reasons - finance, family, house move) but have to say I was shocked how the atmosphere has regressed. It was poisonous at times (in the family stand) and no wonder the players look so tentative.

It's nearly February, we are in 3 cups, very close to the top 4 - things aren't that bad are they?!
