Worth repeating (I think)

Bill Nick. on Greave's workrate.

''All he's done today is score four goals''

Maybe apocryphal as I can't find the original quote.

Journalese for I made this up but it sounds as if it should be true
and I'm too much of a lazy arse to actually check.

Took my 5-year old grandson to see his first match (I think I'd seen 50+ matches by the time I was that age). He enjoyed it despite the cold (in fact I've never known him to be so well-behaved). He chose Harry as his MOTM. For me, however, I'd go for Dembele.

As others have said, Llorente was poor and we improved considerably once Son came on. It was, however, effectively attack against defence. It again exposed our problems in breaking down packed defences. We desperately need a player with pace who can go past players.

Pace isn't going to help against teams who sit deep mate.

Personally thought Sissoko was the best player on the pitch before he went off, drove the ball forward a few times well, set up Kane's first, broke through and switched it to KWP for the second.

I'm sure when people say pay they don't just mean getting Usain Bolt in but more someone who does things more quickly. We seem to take too many touches which really slows it down.

I think we do need another dribbler too. I've heard and read Palace fans say how may times Zaha does something in a one on one situation that not only has the defender looking the wrong way but the fans too, that's the type of thing we're missing.

I quite like Zaha, but I don't think he's the answer against teams who put ten players behind the ball and sit deep. Nobody plays like that against Palace, so Zaha has space to run into and time to play. He'd be frustrated and frustrating if he played for us since he'd rarely get to play like he does now.

Just using him as an example as the type of thing we're missing.

A fraught discussion every time.
Townsend has pace.
It's not straight line speed over 100 metres though
That's a whole pitch.
It's speed of thought and pace of pass
and quick acceleration or change of pace (Modric)
We don't 'ping' the ball to each other
as those fancy Continentals seem to do.
Control is the issue there.
Eriksen is not slow as he shows on the counter
but he has speed of thought.

I'm not saying straight pace is not useful
Bale and Ronaldo use theirs to good effect
Lennon did too.
But in itself it's an add on to control and vision.

That was a winner until "Lennon". Just a like instead.

Tennyson not one of my favourites

Boringly predictable

People tend to be talking about speedy players when the debate is about pace. I think they have flashbacks to Bale roasting Maicon. For me it's about one touch football, accurate passing and players finding space off the ball. That's where pace comes from. So often we see a pass behind the intended player which leads to a total break in momentum. As I've said countless times before, the ball moves way quicker than any player and using it accurately is absolutely vital. IMO, this is where Man City have gone to a different level this season. They pass the ball so that the receiving player is moving onto it and doesn't break stride. In the meantime, the other players are finding pockets of space. It is an absolute nightmare to defend and allows no time for thought or organisation.

Wholeheartedly agree with your overall point, but this is one of the biggest myths in football.

Lennon was more than useful against a packed defence.
FBs couldn't handle him and would just foul him, getting an early booking and often a second yellow in the second half.

You've made that up.

There was many a time where we used to suffer the same fate against packed defences under Redknapp and AVB with Lennon AND Bale in the team, I don't remember a time where Lennon ever got a run on a defence which played deep because there was no space to run into.

He had no-one to play the ball in front of him once Corluka was sold. That was certainly beyond Walker's capabilities.
But we've been watching different teams if you did not see Lennon repeatedly taken out by the FBs, although true, under AVB Lennon seemed to be under instruction to not take anyone on and just play the ball back to keep possession. yawn.
