Definitely a performance of two halves. First half not so good, second half magnificent.

We started with a 3412/5212. It's a formation I dislike as I've mentioned time and time again. We weren't too bad defensively with it. Like the home semi against Chelsea, I think a formation I don't like was helped out by them not having a proper striker. Most of the time they had some controlled possession they didn't really do anything. Most of their chances came from individual mistakes or counters from poor attacking play, which I'll touch on in a minute. I liked the fact that our wingbacks were pressing their full-backs in the first half, despite what Ferdinand was saying (he was contradicting himself a lot in his "analysis" and it was complete shit.). It can be a risky tactic and it didn't always worked perfectly, but I'd prefer that to the 4312 where to just let them have the ball.

Going forward was the major problem. We had no movement. Everyone was narrow and looking for the ball to feet. It was like we weren't allowed anyone other than Aurier and Vertonghen outside the width of the six yard box. No one was running the channels. Our best passer of the ball was in the position where he couldn't find space and Sissoko didn't know where to go when we had the ball. Winks was being easily picked up. Everything was through the eye of the needle and it was easy for them to stop it and then immediately counter.

Second half we corrected everything wrong with the first half. Eriksen dropped deeper into a 352. This freed him up more and allowed him to play facing forward, and it also gave Sissoko a clear and defined role on the right of a three, something he's good at. Eriksen could also run into the space behind the strikers instead of standing there and being picked up. I think it helped a bit with our pressing too. Son was now running the channels and behind their full-backs. The space was there most of the first half and it was criminal we weren't doing it, and it's something we've been slow to do for a while, but we were doing it time and again in the second particularly down their left with Son and Sissoko. This also meant that when we did lose it, it was usually well into their final third and the counter wasn't on. One of the best halves of we've played

Lloris 7 - Made a couple of poor passing decisions, but a crucial save just before half time.

Vertonghen 10 - I mean, just amazing. Club legend.
Alderweireld 7 - Tricky first half. Good second.
Sanchez 7 - Ditto
Foyth 7 - Tritto? Recovered well from his early mistake.
Aurier 5 - As with Eriksen at the weekend, one swing of the leg shouldn't mask an otherwise poor performance. Was bad defensively in the first half it didn't lead to chances so people won't remember them. Either very slow or lazy.

Sissoko 7 - Bad first half, great second. Feel like I'm repeating myself, but his change in performance was the most drastic.
Winks 7 - It's an easy game for him when teams aren't pressing. Struggled for a bit of space in the first because of the shape and was a bit rushed, but better in the second.
Eriksen 7 - Probably the second biggest difference in performance from half to half. Was great in the second. Shame he can't seem to kick the ball cleanly with his left leg anymore.

Son 8 - Played too central in the first half. Different beast in the second. Great link up play with Sissoko in the second.
Lucas 5 - Was unlucky with a couple of attempts. Worked harder than he's given credit for. Just isn't doing enough with and without the ball. There's no reason why he isn't making the same kind of runs Son is.

Very much a game of two halves.

The first 45 mins we looked confused and disjointed. Dortmund were disciplined in behind the ball, and we didn't seem to have the answers as to how to break them down. With the ball we were static and the lack of options led to us being ultra cautious, and then without the ball we often looked unsure of what the plan was and looked open at times - Dortmund in particular were picking up space in that triangle between centre back - wing back - centre mid.

After the break though we were a different team, and quite possibly played the most mature and sensible half of football we have done under Poch. This was rewarded with three goals and puts us in a commanding position in the tie. The handbrake was taken off and there was a lot more decisiveness in what we did. Sometimes we pressed, sometimes we sat back in a better shape (Eriksen sat much more alongside the other two to make a cm3) and got behind the ball, and after stealing the first goal with a slick counter the confidence started flowing to our game. We kept the ball patiently and sensibly and just tried to move them around the pitch and finally worked some opportunities and found some gaps. The second goal was one that the performance deserved, the third was the icing on the cake.

45 mins to bottle and look back on with pride, and should give the players a lot of confidence. A great position to be in in the tie, now to Dortmund, to play equally maturely, and get the job done........

Lloris - Good save in the first half. Distributed the ball pretty well. A competent nights work.

Aurier - A pretty sloppy game throughout in all truth, though he did improve a little in the second half and redeems himself a bit for the cross for Jan's goal.

Foyth - Got caught on the ball a couple of times, but on the whole a pretty assured and sensible display.

Sanchez - Also played people in to trouble a few times, but was mostly assured.

Alderweireld - Struggled first half down that flank and there seemed little understanding, strangely so considering he's played basically all his career with Vertonghen. Sorted it out in the second.

Vertonghen - As above, struggled first half in the role. Second half he had one of those games we sometimes have seen from him at centre back, where he just goes into all out attack mode and starts making things happen. Pressed higher, which was a big part of the opening goal, and started bombing forward and showing off his skills. Great cross for the opener (after the initial pressing), and a cool finish for the second. Well played sir.

Sissoko - Sloppy first half and seemed boxed in and unsure what to do, got better as the game went on and the spaces opened up.

Winks - Was also pretty boxed in first half, ran the centre of the pitch in the second half and just kept the ball moving for us.

Eriksen - I was disappointed with his first half efforts, did a job for us second half though tucking into midfield when we didn't have the ball and started to find spaces and pick some passes as the game opened up.

Moura - Nearly scored a super goal, but probably the one slightly negative aspect of the game. Whilst others improved he struggled to find his feet throughout and was quite wasteful with his touches of the ball. Needs to simplify his game a bit, needs to read things a bit better, Poch also needs to use him a bit better I feel.

Son - Couldn't really make much impact in the first half. Had a livelier second and worked across the line better as space opened up. Calm composed finish for the opening goal to set us on our way.

Subs:
Llorente - Came on. Cleared danger from our own box, and then moments later has nicked a killer goal at the other. What more can you ask for?

Lamela - n/a.

Wanyama - n/a.

Poch goes from poor to world class lately.

Dunno what you're looking at but if you look at the top 3 of the Premier League you'll see we're having our best modern day season and on course for enough points, in any other year, to have won the League.

Mental. I honestly think some people on here are losing their fucking marlies.

Do you know what lately means? It’s not really a secret that we have been winning our games lately because of a strong second half. Even the games we lose, like against United, our second half have been dominant. Maybe quote the whole paragraph next time, i’m clearly talking about the difference between how we play in the first half compared to the second half.

Mental. I honestly think some people on here are losing their fucking marlies.

I voted Jan but was impressed by Winks. In fact he's impressing me more and more as time goes by. If he keep going like he is we're going to have one hell of a player.
I was there and VERTS was great and my MOTM
Winks already is GREAT and keeps getting better while Sissoco was also very good tonight

Special call out for Foyth… he had a rough opening 15-20 mins with a couple of rash mistakes that could've been costly. Many a young player's head may have gone down after that. But I'm impressed with the way he was able to compose himself and stay focused. It's games like this that are building blocks for what might be a very special CB in the future. I have very high hopes for this lad... and I believe today was a step in the right direction.

Superman easily MOTM, our stand in fullback/wingback put to shame the others on both sides this season showing how it's suppose to be done, I petition that he stays there for the rest of the season.

Okay, I know we have some odd members on here, me included, but own up......who had some weed and voted for Big Vic as the MOTM?

I think he was on the pitch for 3 minutes and can’t even remember him touching the ball.

Looks like we have been playing Jan in the wrong position all along.

Jan MOTM for me but Winks is becoming the heartbeat of the team, he loves Spurs as much as the rest of us.

I just LOVE this team.

That was one of the best nights watching Spurs I can recall. Great team performance, great result and a great atmosphere.

I am not so sure about the general feeling the first half was poor, it was just Dortmund when you were watching from up high you could see their defensive structure every time we got the ball wide was exceptional and they just did not let us play between the lines, it was a real cagey European affair in that 1st half.

Jan was exceptional, but mention to Aurier. I have lamented our full backs this year but he is definitely a better option than Trippier IMO, recovers defensively so much quicker and with Sissoko supporting on that side we are hard to break down there.

Winks is becoming very good but needs to add the ‘brave’ forward pass to his game. But typifies this team. But going back to Sissoko he seems to have added a trick in the last two games and beating a man from a standing start a bit like Dembele!

Anyway, what a night, what a team, what a coach!
