Sky have Dembele and Dier as top marks...quite a change from last weekend...Man of the match - Mousa Dembele

So calm and collected on the ball, Dembele made Spurs tick on Saturday evening on a zippy surface. He made 70 passes at a staggering 97.1 per cent accuracy, while also winning 85 per cent of his duels.

Alongside the equally-impressive Eric Dier, Dembele did his defensive work too, making three tackles, two clearances and winning the ball back four times. A superb performance from the Belgian.”

Despite domination of the ball, I thought the first half was a pretty turgid affair. Yes there were a few factors at play tonight - an away game, it was raining heavily, it's been a difficult few weeks for the team - but I expect a team to do more to try and break the opposition down. As I said at HT, I thought Brighton could be got at. They squeezed the midfield lines, but left a lot of space in behind, and quick combinations to release a runner into space could really have hurt them. Sporadic passages of play were here and there, but by and large there was no urgency, we weren't moving the ball in the right areas, and not trying to test Brighton's resolve.

I felt the cm2 epitomised this extreme caution more than anything to be honest. You've got Brighton leaving Murray (not exactly a ferocious, mobile presser) up and everyone else way behind the ball, yet countless times Dier and Dembele are stood with our centre backs. I lost count of the number of times Toby or Jan came forward to take the ball and look to play and one, or frequently both, of our central midfielders were then stood behind them. Why? If our centre backs can take the ball there, then the centre mids should be about 15 yards higher up the pitch, engaging the opposition in more purposeful areas. The knock-on effect then is it drags players deeper (Eriksen), and/or inside (Son, Moura), as we struggle to play through the centre of the park with such a void, and so play is often, as we saw frequently first half, the play get shuffled towards the touchlines.

Individually they might not have been great, but this I think also has an effect and stymies Moura and Son and their roles in that line up. If you are going to play two more direct wide forwards who want the ball delivered to them in the final third, then you really need the centre of the pitch to be dominating - not in the safe areas (far away from the front three), but impacting and running the game in the oppositions half, asking them questions. It might have been for the most part neat and tidy (especially from Dembele), but I felt it was on the periphery rather than in areas to be effective.

However, despite our lack of cutting edge, we were gifted (another) fairly fortuitous goal - a dumb handball, and Kane showed if nothing else he knows how to dispatch a penalty - and so found ourselves ahead at the break. And at least we had relatively good basic control on the game........

But the second half right from the off Brighton made a collective effort to get up the pitch and more in our faces. This wasn't as bad as some of the other games in recent weeks, we weren't on the ropes as we have been in some of them, but it did get a bit ragged and unconvincing for about 25 minutes or so. We didn't move the ball very well for quite a spell of the game. And we did leak some chances, often again of our doing, and rode our luck a couple of times majorly. We were wobbling, again......

But then we put together a lovely move, from back to front at largely one touch, right through their press and then straight at their defence, and Lamela sweeps home for a really good team goal. As a collective maybe the best moment of our season so far. 2-0, things look a lot better, and you hope that is that.

At that point, in terms of their work off the ball, Brighton's discipline was completely broken. Didn't work as unit, didn't press well, did everything individually. I think that's a large part of what happened in those final few minutes but it did allow us the ball and to play with a bit of freedom and confidence and should have extended our lead before the end. However as a final twist it seemed we got lulled into a false sense of security, downed tools a few minutes early, and left ourselves far too open, managed to concede a goal, and had to survive another scare after that and suggested that the fragility is still there...... No wonder Poch wasn't too pleased at the final whistle.

A win was desperately needed tonight, that was the main thing. We need to rebuild momentum. Certain facets saw a slight improvement.... But there is still a lot of work to do, based on that game, and they need to keep working hard in the coming weeks.

Gazzaniga - Did most of his work competently enough and looked assured. However, if not for that offside call looked like there was no foul to me (I haven't seen a good replay yet) and so would have been another keeper conceding a goal flapping badly at an aerial ball. Maybe the luck, if nothing else, is with him.......

Trippier - Some pretty ropey defending at times. Didn't think his use of the ball was all that great either, but involved for the second goal (as well as his freekick for the first).

Alderweireld - Scrambled well a few times.

Vertonghen - A few minor moments, but solid enough.

Rose - Seemed to have his sense of adventure back and a bit more running, did well for the second goal. However also has moments where he is switching off badly and didn't do a great job for the Brighton goal.

Dier - Some neat and tidy stuff, some where as ever he didn't do so well when pressed. Some of the positioning at times wasn't great I thought.

Dembele - Yeah, exceptionally neat and tidy, however in utterly safe areas. Mopped up well at times to be fair, but he wasn't always the best positionally at times either.

Eriksen - Too deep and too cautious I felt for the majority of the first half. Enjoyed it more towards the end where we had our comfortable spell.

Moura - Not really in it. His movement and anticipation is also really in need of work.

Son - Looks completely run down. First touch isn't great at the best of times, was pretty barbaric today.

Kane - Barely in it first half. Isolated but neither was he busy and looking for work. At least he can take a penalty still. He too enjoyed it a bit more in those comfortable closing stages, and at least today got some shots away. Interestingly he showed that he is still capable of darting away and leaving the defence trailing for that last chance he had. What needs to be worked out is why he isn't showing this more often - getting in behind, running channels, closing down, etc.......

Subs:
Lamela - looked bright. Good work and great finish for the winning goal.

Alli - Did ok, had the good fortune to come into the game at a good time/spell for us.

Gazzaniga - calm, authoritative, kept concentration, no wobbles, good decision making when distributing and had no chance on their goal.

Trippier - pretty poor again, improved as the game wore on but was targeted by Brighton when they reserved and didn’t cope well.

Alderweireld - pretty good, probably our best centre defender, mopped up well and read attacks well.

Vertonghen- okay, a couple of iffy moments but generally calm and handled most things that came his way.

Rose - defensively caught out on occasion and one ludicrously selfish/ impetuous moment but also provided good impetus going forward and showed some of that old bite.

Diet - awful. Sloppy, clumsy, positionally indisciplined. Needs a time out desperately.

Dembele - a bit better. Dependable and solid, but those old dribbles don’t work as well as they used to, and he really does slow us down.

Moura - a constant threat and while his execution was a bit off, he was always the most likely to make something happen.

Eriksen - wasn’t in a Denmark shirt with a point to prove so, as per the last two months, he was weak, cowardly and irresponsible for the most part.

Son - first touch all over the place, running down blind alleys, not sure he completed a pass. Bad day.

Kane - improved as the game wore on, worked the channels well, showed for the ball a lot more, took his penalty well and showed a bit more sharpness and purpose with some rasping hits.

Lamela - great appearance, has to start next week v Huddersfield. Not just the goal, his energy full improved us.

Dele - looked energetic.

Overall I’m pleased. Conceding was annoying, and it wasn’t exactly free flowing, but we controlled most of the match away to a good side, Pochettino addressed our deterioration with an obvious but for once timely sub and we could have won by more. Something to build on.

Dier is an interesting one. I can understand why some thought he was better and some thought he wasn't great again.

Let's start with his passing. This was much, much better. Passed with zip and purpose, effective vertical passing and sprayed some nice passes out wide.

However, off the ball he struggled at times.. Got turned easily, and did look a touch slow when trying to battle for the ball.

And the penalty shout against him typifies that, just couldnt adjust quickly enough.

But his passing was much better, so a mixed bag fit for me.
He’s better when teams sit back- facing the opposition half helps his passing. But he isn’t great under pressure and I’d instruct my team to press the fuck out of him; that’s when he’s more problematic for us

Thought the last 20mins were the best I’ve seen Kane look for quite a while. Seemed like something suddenly clicked into place and he was carrying the ball beyond players and getting shots off. Feels like years he’s managed that, I loved his chances almost as much as our goals as it’s so important for us he can still do that.

Gazzaniga - fine under what was hoof ball tactics from Brighton 6

Rose was a bit dodgy at times but very good going forward, which makes us a better team. 7

Trippier - poor, i’d like Aurier to get a run of games. He’s just simply not a good defender and doesn’t have pace to bail himself out. Wasn’t great going forward either 5

Jan - decent 7

Toby bit sloppy at times passing wise and looks slow but decent overall 6

Dembele - man of the match for me today. Controlled midfield and passed the ball well, he’s declining but he worked very hard 8

Dier - bit hit and miss, his passing was better but that’s never been my issue with him. He’s very lumbering and it felt Dembele was covering for him defensively way too often considering he’s meant to be the DM 6

Eriksen - relatively quiet but some flashes of quality, he’s a due a top class game 6

Lucas - poor game overall I thought, ran up a few blind alleys and his touch was off, not convinced him and Son can play in same team 5

Son - poor game but mainly as looked exhausted, needs slower integration back into starting 11. He’ll be back to best soon though 5

Kane was Kane of recent times until transforming into Kane of old in latter stages 6.5

Lamela - improved us not just with workrate but finding space and moving us forward through passing ability, deserves a few starts 8

Dele - good cameo and glad he’s back, looked pretty sharp 6.5

Good subs from Poch and glad he’s reverted back to 4-2-3-1.

Being caught on the ball in dangerous positions and putting teammates under pressure with errant passes and poor decisions throughout. I like Dier. I think he’s our best DM on form. Today he was bad.

Not throughout, it happened a couple of times, which was sloppy. But his passing was much, much improved from the last few weeks.

On balance he wasn't awful.

Not going to agree. I expect much much more from him, and he’s capable of it.

Re-watch some of it again, and me tell his passing wasn't improved. First thing I noticed, was really obvious imo.

Look, he looked slow off the ball and got turned easily a few times.

But overall, to call it an awful performance is wholly inaccurate but each to their own.

Funny how two fans can see it so differently. My view is the complete opposite. I don’t like Dier in our midfield and think he’s been getting steadily worse for over a year now, but thought he was decent today.

Although the main reason he looked better ( especially in the first half) is that the opposition stood off him.

Cos for once the defenders didn't look scared in the last 4 games. Gazza looked way more assured and that would have made a huge impact on the team

I find it absolutely bizarre - bigotry, basically - to see multiple posts describing Dier's performance as lacking. You may as well all be the late, un-lamented BC ranting on about Walker: criticism related to preconceptions rather than performance.

Dier was transformed today. His passing was consistently penetrative, positive, attacking and accurate and his positional play was solid. In the first half, Dier and Dembélé totally dominated the Brighton midfield, winning the ball 20 or more times and entirely stifling every attempt by Brighton to construct an attack, while feeding the ball reliably to our attacking players, often in good positions.

But Hughton has made himself a pretty good team there, one who are very difficult to play at home. They defended with great resolution and organisation, letting us have the ball in un-threatening positions and then pressing when we entered the final third, until Murray unwisely stuck his arm out. Then they had to come out and play. But Hughton and his players had the understanding to work out that they couldn't just fly forward, they had to keep their shape and advance their pressing 20m, so they could win the ball in our half instead of close to their own goal.

It caused a lot of disruption and forced our defenders to do some work, but it also left room for swift attacks and finally one of those bore fruit. From the instant of the second goal, we got the ball back and regained control of midfield, until stoppage time.

They're a tough team to play at home. Good away win, well-controlled for most of the game. Our best players: Rose, Dier, Lamela and Gazzaniga, with Kane and Dembélé just behind.

It's good to see Gazzaniga developing into a confident, assured goalkeeper, just in time for Vorm to move on after this season.

You should know me far better by now to suggest I base any comment on a preconception. I call it as I see it, and today I saw a player selling his teammate short several times, a player who I stand up for most weeks.

Insinuating that someone is drunk on the basis that you disagree with them, even strongly, is highly insulting and unnecessary.
