Your just commenting for the sake of it.... Hugo save onto the post stopped us potentially being humiliated.... Cardiff at home with 10 men for most of the 2nd half should not end like it did. That was torture

We were not hanging on. They had one chance from a set piece with about 20 minutes to go and that was it. If anything, they were having to do some desperate defending to keep it at only 1-0.

Was at the match and those saying Sissoko had a good game must be mad??

He gave the ball away numerous times, got in some dangerous positions just to cross to a Cardiff player, nearly cost us a goal by passing straight to a Cardiff player... the fans around me kept saying we are playing with 10 men and fully agree, he just runs and had nothing about him... awful player

Albeit, he wasn't the worst player on the pitch today, that reward is for Son.

Seems crystal clear to me that Son needs time out. Fatigue can be mental as well.as physical.

I saw some zippy passing in the first half but it just evaporated and the game.went stodgy. I'm really concerned about this playing from the back. We do it slowly and put ourselves under crazy pressure at times. There s a time.and place for silky passing and.a.time.and place to get rid and relieve pressure.

Out of interest, is there a reason Lamela was left out? Can't figure that one personally. Injury precaution as he went off in the last match?

Wish we had seen a 4 3 3. Needed an extra man in the middle and a son less up front.

3 points though. Job done. Got some.time to sort things out.

I disagree with Sissoko he didn't do anything wrong this game and I am normally critical of him. Played some great passes as well, so not sure what game you was watching.
Sissy played a few really bad passes under no pressure giving the ball away

Totally.

Sissoko was ok today. Lots of energy and some decent runs and a couple of decent lay offs.

He really wasn't ever poo today.

I'm just glad we ground out the win. Considering the exertions of Wednesday, limited rotation options and severe lack of brains and creativity in the starting attacking 4. I don't think it's surprising we looked so abject.

We have a great record following Champions League games and grinding out wins is comforting from a team who over the last couple of seasons have drawn too many games. I still remember with pain the Wembley draws against Burnley, Swansea and West Brom that cost us dearly early last season. We are not playing well but are in touch with all the teams above us who are apparently playing brilliantly

I don't think anyone played poorly today, just nobody stood out. Some of you hammering Son must have been watching on a bad stream. He was our most dangerous attacker and as I can appreciate from my Cub Wembley perch is the only forward actually making runs off the ball- it's just a shame we don't have anyone with the vision or the technique to pick him out. Winks is again getting the plaudits but he shares all Dembeles faults. For example, Winks dribbled his way towards the left corner flag three or four times in the second half- it looked good but achieved nothing. The ball ended up back in the centre circle every time. There's just no incisiveness.

The more important stat than 75% possession is 7 shots on target to 6, and the number of chances we conceded again was a big worry.

We need to get players back, and some firing, to win the double headers v West Ham and PSV.

I think this thread sums up the whole performance. Nobody particular played badly and quite a few played well. Which has left me somewhat perplexed when viewed as a whole it wasn’t very good. Looking forward to seeing the highlights as we probably should have had 4 but they easily could have had 2. Oh and was that a stonewall pen on rose after the sending off or did I not see right ?

Very miserable game, I'll keep it as brief as I can......

The first 15 minutes or so were if anything too easy for us. We scored the goal and threatened frequently as a limited Cardiff team couldn't get near us. I think there was a combination then that we lost a bit of focus and concentration and so some errors crept in, they woke up and improved, and so gained heart and had more of a go, and the rest of the first half was very scrappy with little control - even if decent chances still came about at regular intervals.

The second half was quite frankly a waste of time as a spectator. I know at 1-0 up, a limited opposition down to 10 men, and enjoying most of the ball you're probably not going to take massive risks. But I felt our use of the ball, urgency, movement, structure, was all pretty crap and then when we did have openings were very wasteful. It wasn't great to watch at all, from my perspective.

That we're in contention at the right end of the table despite all the hurdles/difficulties that have been placed before us so far this season is quietly impressive, and shows the talent and resolve in the squad and the coaching staff...... However, and as I have been discussing across other threads, this was another performance that was unconvincing and in most aspects of the play we need to improve and get back to the standards of recent seasons, and some of our play needs to evolve. Manage that, and who knows what we can achieve.......

Lloris - Made one good save, and was his line smartly another time, but also had a bad moment of hesitancy that almost cost a goal.

Trippier - A few of his nice passes slid down the line, thought he made some bad reads in defence at times though.

Sanchez - Really poor game I thought, maybe his worst for us actually. In my opinion he did a lot of things wrong, whether misjudging the flight of the ball in the air, poor clearances or positioning, and he picked up a daft booking. And my main complaint is his relationship with Alderweireld, they were constantly stood on each others toes and this caused issues two or three times where a flick or pass took both of them out of the game.

Alderweireld - Couple of crucial blocks, but some sloppy stuff at times too and his passing has declined this season. Also see above re. his partnership with Sanchez, it isn't all the rookies fault.

Rose - A little wasteful but one of our better outlets. Thought he should have had a penalty.

Dier - Right place at the right time for the crucial goal. I thought he was fairly average and ultra safe over the 90 minutes.

Winks - Some nice drives forward at times, but nothing much of purpose really.

Sissoko - Barbecued a couple of really good openings early on. Had some good runs at times and offered a threat, but also some poor touches or passes led to moves breaking down. That this is about as good as it gets says it all really......

Son - Lively at times and probably offered the best movement of our front line, but pretty wasteful.

Moura - Very wasteful and another display of sporadic, individual involvements.

Kane - One of those games where he clearly wasn't going to do any running (that he was played as the No.10 for long spells I think shows this was a plan to nurse him through). His second half in particular was pretty pathetic I thought.

Subs:
Lamela - Can understand why he didn't start, it wasn't 72 hours prior that he'd crawled off the pitch having emptied the tank. Very average when he came on, and a few loose touches.

Wanyama - A sign that we weren't interested in doing any more than winning 1-0.

Davies - Ditto.

No need to overreact, the performance started well, was decent in moments, was generally one of a team who knew they had a half full tank after the Barcelona match so elected to stay in 2nd gear as they knew it would be enough. Yes, another goal or two would’ve been nice to settle the nerves, but there were more than enough chances to do so, we just didn’t take them. This owed in part to another odd tactical decision (Kane as an AM), a few bad decisions in key moments, and a bit of luck (that save from the Kane header followed by Moura’s shot being cleared off the line). Not much do judge from this game other than Cardiff are really bad and our boys left if all on the pitch three days ago.

Lloris - okay, not looking superbly confident but one good save.

Trippier - fine defensively, great passing forward throughout.

Sanchez - okay, little to do, outdone for pace once.

Alderweireld - decent enough, great off the line clearance the one time we came close to conceding. Passing from lcb not as good as from rcb.

Rose - great pace and energy, constant threat but twice he dived when in great crossing positions. This displeases me.

Dier - fine, solid enough, few decent passes.

Winks - encouraging, drove forward well, incisive passes and showed confidence on the ball. Something to build on.

Sissoko - pretty decent. Lacked end product but did well breaking forward and driving at Cardiff. Some good passes too. Linked well with Trippier.

Kane - some good link play and passing, couple of decent passes, but nowhere near as effective as he’d have been as a striker.

Son - started slow but improved as the match wore on with some great dribbles.

Lucas - threatening, lively, would’ve been through had he not been fouled, but lacked a touch of composure and not as effective as he’d have been on the wing.

Lamela - involved but unspectacular, must’ve been wondering how he didn’t start.

Wanyama - came on, was solid.

Davies - came on.

Oh, and I don’t understand how Mr Warnock thinks a deliberate flying scithe from the side on a player through on goal, with no intention to win the ball, isn’t a definite red card.

That is an odd pairing - given that Toby's best moment might have been the clearance off the line, which Lloris should have stopped before it got there.
Im still not sure the Cardiff player didnt shank it based on the replay and where it went out. But Toby was there.

Toby MOTM for me, thought all our midfielders and attackers weren't good enough today which made the job much harder than it needed to be, without Toby we could be easily sitting enraged with a draw or less in a game we should have won comfortably.

The chance that Toby cleared off the line wasn’t Lloris fault. Rose should’ve never been passed by their player, Lloris only checked his run as it looked like Rose had it handled.

I think Sissoko passes a very very low bar.
People are amazed he stays upright for 30 minutes at a time.
As Dr. Johnson said of women preaching and dogs walking on their hind legs.

I told him I had been that morning at a meeting of the people called Quakers, where I had heard a woman preach.
Johnson: "Sir, a woman's preaching is like a dog's walking on his hind legs. It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all."

Son tried hard. Can never fault his effort. But his decision making was poor. He wasn't the only one by any stretch. I don't think he has played well, or to his capable standard since last season. Onions and all that.

The whole.front line misses Eriksen. Even when he plays at half mast, he has more vision than the am3 we saw yesterday combined. There's no clever passing. Moura does it occasionally, but not at the same level.

Birdie - Toby and Winks
Par - Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Rose, Dier, Sissoko, Kane, Lamela (sub)
Bogey - Son, Moura

Not enough time to rate Wanyama or Davies.

Son and Moura in particular had to take their chances better, both in a literal sense and in the "we needed them to show their worth with Eriksen and Dele still out" sense. They did neither.

Winks needs to figure out how to start games well because he's improved minute by minute in each of his last few games after starting poorly.

Toby was the reason we didn't concede today. MOTM.
Moura showing in the last few games why PSG were happy to sell him ?

I'm not as worried as you are about our form.

If there is a pattern to our seasons under Poch it is thus:
1. A slow start; complaints about preseason training being brutal and damaging the players. Slow, turgid play.
2. A new formation; this year it is 433 and it is being persisted with as a way to accommodate our pacy wingers. Last year we were trying 343 to accommodate Sanchez. Once again there's lots of experiments.
3. Eventually we revert to 4231 and start playing better.

Poch is a process manager and I believe the shape of the season is designed to work in the long run. It keeps everyone from going stale and accommodates new players and generates consensus: everyone eventually understands how they work best before we get to the business end of the season.

Yesterday I saw Dier properly drop back into the defence for the first time in over a season, the whole team instantly changed shape. There was no need to do it, they were experimenting as a team on how to see out the match.

It was a boring game but a really interesting part of the process.

First things first, that was a shocking midfield (obviously due to injuries). But if Lamela was fit to start, we really needed to go 4-2-3-1 with him as the #10. Anytime Eriksen isn't fit, Lamela needs to be the go to back-up. Dier, Sissoko and Winks together was a bit OTT against a bottom-of-the-table team. Any two of them (plus Lamela) would have been fine.

Anyhow, ratings:

Lloris: 6/7 - OK. Some good stuff, but still a couple of iffy moments.

Trippier: 5 - Defending was very ordinary. OK going forward, but his job in a back four is more defence-focused.
Sanchez: 6/7 - Still some nervous moments.
Toby: 8 - MOM. He was everywhere. Class today.
Rose: 6 - Bit of everything today - some good, some terrible, some shit diving.

Dier: 6/7 - Good. Not particularly troubled.
Winks: 7 - Similar to Barca game. Started slowly and not in the game. Grew into it in the second half.
Sissoko: 7.5 - Very good. Got into some great positions, made some excellent tackles and used his superior athleticism well today.

Moura: 7 - Dangerous as he has been all season, but nowhere near as critical. Should have scored.
Kane: 6 - Tough one, as he kept dropping into midfield (although I think this was mainly due to the fact that there was no creativitiy in midfield. He seemed to go back up top more once Lamela came on). Probably didn't influence the game enough and get into enough good positions.
Son: 6 - Made good runs off the ball, but still doesn't seem at his best. Needs a break.

Lamela: 7 - Came on and made a difference. Loving his form at the moment. He is obviously feeling good too. Needs to be playing in the #10 role until Eriksen is 100% match fit again.
Wanyama/Davies: NR
