(Not so) Dope on A Rope

For 60-70 minutes that was an absolutely absorbing game. One of those games where even though things weren't all going our way, it was still hard to take your eyes off it or get too wound up, there was just so much happening.

I'm not sure how much of how we played, and ultimately, won this game was part of a grand plan, maybe much of it, maybe some of it, maybe none of it, maybe Poch wanted us to jab and move a fair bit more early on, but watching us sit on the ropes and take jab after jab but then spring out with killer punches was a bloody thrilling novelty to behold.

I thought for a game like that, even if Alli wasnt suspended, Son was absolutely the right choice, yes, he can be a little erratic at times, but no worse than Alli, and what he does bring is energy on the counter, and he used that energy brilliantly to open the scoring and was a genuinely lively threat throughout, and if he'd been passed to a couple more times in great positions, he'd have possibly had another goal, although to be fair, he did blow one such chance too.

In theory this was a better balanced choice for the CM3 too, swapping out Sissoko for Dembele, I completely understand and agree with the change, but for 60 minutes Dembele really struggled to cope with the ferocity of Dortmund's press. He's used to being able to buy himself time with a twist and twirl, but this Dortmund team don't take that kind of prisoner, and without the ball it was even worse, as the game fizzed around him, and this was never more evident than for their goal, where he was left bewildered, by their zip zip passing. Dier too was having a tough time of it first half, chasing shadows, and the pair of them made about 6 passes between them, and also struggled to stem the death by a thousand cuts football that was suffocating us, the pair of them barely getting a tackle in.

The second half started pretty similarly to how the first finished, but various facets were gradually changing, we were starting to scare them more and more on the break, they got very unlucky with a perfectly good goal being chalked off at 1-2, and then on the hour we did manage to punish them again. The first two goals had been largely solo efforts, this one more team construct, the ball inevitably flowing through Eriksen and dispatched by Kane. Now the dynamics were really changing, Dortmund had to keep trying to go forward, but they their energy was wilting, a combination of 60 minutes of high octane effort and the constant wounding that exposure brought them was curbing their enthusiasm to chase back as ferociously as they pressed forward and we were getting at them time and time again.

Like a boxer who's had his stomach, ribs and kidneys constantly jabbed, weary Dortmund were now much less reluctant to throw punches, and the last 20-25 minutes was pretty comfortable.

There were good performances from several players. Kane struggled a bit to hold the ball first half when we needed it, but did set Son away for his goal and second half he worked his bollocks off and was bloody superb, wasted a couple of situations but also made a couple more and scored vital goals himself. The two full backs were decent, good energy, Aurier was a bit positionally lax a couple of times first half and didn't really deliver much in terms of offensive end product, but was a powerful and pacey second half and is a ferocious competitor. Davies has probably had two of his best games for us in the space of 7 days.

Eriksen is just so fucking vital, even on a day like this when he's spent 60 minutes struggling for oxygen, given that CM3 role again, he saw more ball than any other mid/forw, made 5 key passes and gradually, quietly as ever, became the most influential player on the pitch.

All the CB's were damn good throughout and kept us in it first half, but Vertonghen was fucking imperious tonight. Gets my MOTM.

Individual

Lloris - Good game, one great bit of sweeping.

Aurier - Mixed bag first half, very good second half.

TA - Rock solid.

DS - This kid's slipped right in nicely. Couple of iffy moments but generally, considering the test, was damn good.

JV - Rolls Royce performance. Imperious. MOTM

Davies - Poch has clearly worked with him, got him getting forwards much better, and he's just had his best week in a spurs shirt IMO.

Eriksen - Week afteer week this diminutive, unassuming Dane leaves his mark all over games.

Dier/Dembele - Punch drunk first 60 minutes, took a 9 count, got up off the floor and managed to duck and move the last 5 rounds.

Son - Brilliant early burst of energy and was a lively thorn at various stages, wasted a great chance, but got himself into several great positions and didn't always get the service his runs merited.

Kane - His first goal typified him - all determination. There some slack moments where he could have had a surer hold up touch first half, but second half he was very, very good, worked his nuts off and caused them all sorts of problems.

If he wanted us to play like that he wouldn't have changed things at half time and we would have played the same way in the second half.

What did he change at half time? I didn't see any change. What changed is that Dortmund got tired.
And even if he had changed at half time, it wouldn't necessarily mean that. It could mean that he had another plan given the situation we were then. 1 goal up and with their team very open

Dortmund were always going to be play that aggressive high press. We soaked it up and countered them very effectively.

Second they were always going to tire which Pock knew then was the time to press them back, and it worked a treat.
We had two good counters, and one of them involved Kane winning the ball on the halfway line from a Vertonghen hoof and bulldozing his way through Dortmund's defence. We did little the rest of the half attacking-wise and through some good luck and excellent defending we hung on until we changed things. We were far better when we made those changes and credit to Poch for seeing what was going wrong
What did he change at half time? I didn't see any change. What changed is that Dortmund got tired.

Son played much wider when we were out of possession helping out the midfield. For most of the first half he was around there deepest midfielder but we were letting them switch play with ease. Their full-backs were always free and we were asking Dembele and Erisken to cover too much ground. They were camped in our half when we set up like that. In the second part of the half he seemed to get instructions to move there but wasn't entirely sure what he had to do and seemed a bit confused. We also didn't immediately retreat like we did in the first half

Poch said after the game that he made changes at half-time. He didn't say what but those were obvious things.

Kane as Motm, though both Toby and Verts (if he didn't get sent off) are also deserving of it.

We really missed a fit wanyama in that first half. But I honestly believe that's the most intense press we will face all season.Even Madrid won't be as tough as that 1st half imo.And but for a wonder goal we stood up to it.

Toby was superb. I think with Aurier impressing, Kane blitzing Sanchez doing well and Davies transforming we tend to forget the ever present. Toby was a step ahead of the opposition, snuffing out any danger before it transpired. That's world class in my eyes.

Outstanding team performance. We played it smart and won ugly. Showed immense maturity under pressure. Didn't get sucked into playing a high line at Wembley. Did really well transitioning to counter attack even though its not our natural game. Difficult to to pick a MOTM for this one. Kane, Davies and Jan were all outstanding. But really Kane lead the line and deserves it. Aurier made a great debut. Toby was immense and read the game so well. Son was electric and caused them a lot of problems along with Eriksen. Dier and Dembele coped with pressure of their quick transitions well but were on the back foot a lot of the time. Still a great moment to be a Spurs fan. COYS!!

Harry Kane MOM.

Harry Kane is world class BTW - no need to debate this shite anymore.

I didn't see the game but Poch said post match that he changed some things at half time, he said he tweaked some players positionally....

Really hard to pick a MOTM as I thought so many played so well. Dortmund played a really good game and our defence were superb in keeping them down to one goal. We made a lot of timely tackles and interceptions in that first half. But then again the goals we scored were superb so perhaps Son and Kane were the best.
In the end I think I will give it to Verts but it could easily be almost any Spurs player

Incredible performance from the team. Dortmund are no pushovers. Nice to see us play on the counter.

Toby, Verts, Davies and Kane were all amazing.

Also, Sanchez looks like he's been playing in that team for years. What a coup he was.

I think the ratings have been harsh on Dembele and Dier - they were totally out numbered in midfield.

Kane stuck £30m on his price, so it is hard to reject him as MOTM.

Dortmund will have won many friends with that performance - it is a shame that one of us are not going to qualify.
I dare say UEFA will weigh us down with mystery bookings and bans to ensure we miss out. If Sissoko and Llorente end up having to start games in the CL, and Dier has to fill random gaps in defence, then the CL will spit us out soon enough.

This was exactly the type of game you strive for if trying to win things. First half we were chasing shadows and they were dominating possession, yes they created but that's always going to occur when an opposition is throwing 8 players forward. We were disciplined, rode our luck a little at times but were clinical on the counter. Just like you have to do at times. Second half they tired from their over the top work in the first half but we improved positionally and kept the ball better. We did a number on them after half time, battered them at times and it could easily have been 6 or 7.

It was something completely different, never seen us forced often into that kind of game plan but it will happen and does happen away from home a lot against big teams. We've shown our abilities of keeping disciplined, sustaining pressure and defending well whilst looking a threat on counter. Was a very enjoyable thing to see and thought we were great overall today.

One thing from today is Poch may have a massive decision in the away game. We have to play 3 at the back but I think Son worked well today, stretched them, helped us break and get in behind their defence. Dele wouldn't have worked today and shouldn't start the next game against them.

This comment from a Dortmund fan is imo the biggest clue that Pochettino intented to do what we did the first 20/25 minutes of the game.

we pushed so far up that Auba's strengths were muted, and put our front 3 too far up with nobody supporting Kagawa between the lines, leaving him only Sahin/Dahoud to play off of. A lot of tactical failings imo.

Hugo, 6 - Good save with his feet, but really not that much to. Terrible passing as usual.
What? That's a strange take. Not only the rating but comments as well.

I can't think of any howlers by foot from Hugo. In fact, it seems like he was more willing than usual to be pragmaic and just put his foot through it. He also made a crucial save from that corner and nullified their pace and threat in behind with a couple of excellent pieces of sweeper-keeping, showing awareness, quick reactions and important acceleration. He was outstanding in this.

Also, in general, I think Sanchez's game is being slightly underrated. He had a couple of nervy moments in possession, but coped with Aubameyang physically on a number of occassions and barely let him have a sniff in behind. He looks like a really exciting player and an excellent addition at the centre of that back 3.

I though all 5 defenders were superb, Son dynamic and Eriksen grew into the game and ended it as influential as ever, but Kane was my MotM. The guy is just something else. Love him.

Plenty to choose from for MoM but i'm giving it to Davies who had a great game. I've been critical of him in the past but our tactics played to his strengths here.

A special mention for Sanchez. Not because he had a perfect game (he didn't) but because his pace and power enabled us to play this system. Dortmund are a bloody good team and if we had had Dier, Wimmer or CCV in the Sanchez role I honestly think they would have put 4 past us.
