I thought the fazio header was poor for their goal, should've been high and looping not down onto the deck...

It's good news week.

Get yourselves over to the ITK thread. The Togolise Crowned Prince of Egotown, the gangsta ant of Lilliput and Kaboul the Warrior Clown have apparently marched into the glorious revolutionary gaffer's office all indignant at being asked to do proper work for a living and piss whining about the younger players refusing to doff their caps to them and shit, and have apparently been told the by Che Poch, judging by the lineup today (the ITK has it that Lennon only made the bench due to a shortage of options) that they have two choices, his way or the fucking highway, even if the highway turns out to be playing three way FIFA round Aaron's crib in the hood for the next 6 months.

this is where that particular piece of itk falls down for me though. he could've called up a youth player instead(ball was on the bench afterall) and not only was lennon in the squad but he came on as well when he could've brought ceballos on instead. maybe there is something to the info but i don't think lennon's in the dog house as much as you hope.

Pressure though Blake, he went for his best option on the bench to give us some width.

Also Lennon's attitude might not be as bad as some of the other 'malcontents'.

I totally agree with this excerpts of the match report from ESPN. Spot on.

Win may hide Spurs' struggles

If nothing else, Tottenham are quite good at playing against 10 men. It is only when they face 11 that they struggle. Had opponents kept a full complement of players on the pitch, Spurs would probably have lost their last five league games.

Instead, Mauricio Pochettino's side beat Aston Villa after Christian Benteke was dismissed and defeated Hull, scoring both goals after Gaston Ramirez saw red. Both comebacks could be used to suggest that the club has spirit, and with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen both scoring and impressing, this was the second time they turned defeat into victory. All three of their away wins have come against 10 men.

Yet Pochettino should be troubled by Tottenham's first-half performance. It was abject. Hull's superiority should have been reflected by a second goal, which might have put the game beyond Spurs' reach. It was one-way traffic when Tottenham had a one-man advantage, but there is a sense the eventual scoreline papered over the cracks.

I dont usually blame the manager, but the selection was all wrong. Lamela and Ericksen wont stay outside and so we had 4 midfielders fighting for space in the middle and no width. It was too easy for Hull to defend and just as easy for them to exploit the flanks. Its hard to expect the players to perform well when they are set up wrong. After they went a man down our fullbacks were able to come forward more and help with that problem, as did the introduction of Lennon.

Lloris - Who wouldnt be jittery playing behind that lot
Dier - What happened to the rampaging full back from Upton Park?
Davies - Close between him and Rose
Fazio - Is he an upgrade on Dawson?
Verts - Going through the motions
Dembele - What does he actually offer?
Mason - Drive and passion
Lamela - Glimpses of quality. We should expect more for 30M
Eriksen - Needs to be played centrally
Kane - Whilst he keeps scoring his weaknesses don't matter
Soldado - Poacher my arse

Chriches - Makes me nervous but did well
Lennon - Gave us width and looked dangerous
Paulinho - Need shot of him

I think we have to admit that we again got a large amount of luck. Another away game where when it was 11 vs. 11 we were losing and even more concerning we were out battled and the opposition looked sharper and with a better gameplan. We did play sensibly and used the extra man to our advantage eventually but we cannot rely on catalysts like this every single game.

First of all, the selection. Many liked it, I didn't. Where to start... For starters you could see again it would be very narrow and predictable. If you do not even attempt to try and stretch the opposition and make the pitch big we will have the problem of having a lot of possession in front of the defensive structure. Dier at right back and persisting with Fazio at centre back I didn't agree with. Dembele and Mason in a cm2, especially away from home, was madness and then to go with that selection you had the hardly diligent with his tracking back Eriksen, plus the positionally ill-disciplined Lamela, and the two strikers. Really asking for trouble away from home whichever PL team you come up against.

Amazingly... ... this team really struggled defensively at times in the first half. We had pitiful attempts at pressing from the front, then the likes of Eriksen just shepherding the opposition by as they advanced up the pitch. Mason was trying his best, Dembele though had very little to show from his time on the pitch and has regressed badly. We are far too easy to play against and as has been the case, we neither press high as a team nor do fall back in behind the ball and put up a brick wall. We cant keep being so open and allow as much time on the ball. After the early goal Hull did become a bit more cautious, even at that early stage, but every time they came forward they caused us a problem and where the midfield/forwards didn't press, the defenders and Lloris looked a bit shaky and hardly commanding in what they did. We were lucky not to be two or three down. They had by far the better chances in the first half.

With the ball in the first half, again things were entirely predictable. A lot of the time there was some neat and tidy stuff being played, but then most of those we had out there have reasonable technique and are neat and tidy footballers. When Hull got the goal and dropped slightly it offered a bit more space, yet surprise surprise most of this ended up being played centrally (no width) in front of the opposition and very little of actual purpose being done with it. As has been the case far too often in the last couple of seasons, we have had a lot of the ball buts it been sterile possession with seemingly little clue about how to open up the opposition or what we have in mind in terms of how to attack.

The second half had barely got started before we found ourselves with the man advantage, and Hull dropped even deeper. I have to say that as poor as I thought the first half was, that the team adapted well to having the extra man and with the changes that Poch made bringing on Lennon and Chiriches we moved the ball around quickly and patiently and probed away trying to tire them out. We had made the pitch bigger and particularly on the right were able to get the overload and work a crossing position where we created a couple of decent chances. Eriksen and Mason I thought did a really good job of dictating the play and making sure we kept moving the ball quickly and not giving Hull a breather. We did leave it late, we had the extra man and it was a fortunate win, but in that situation I thought we played intelligently and how you should do against 10 men.

On the whole though, a looooooooooong way to go and players and Poch must keep improving and working on things.

Lloris - A couple of great saves, a couple of iffy moments on aerial challenges though.

Dier - I don't think he was woeful but he isn't a right back clearly. Very little going forward and picked up a silly booking. I'd like to see him get a chance at centre back.

Fazio - Again, didn't convince me. In the first half when we had to do a bit of defending he wasn't very commanding.

Vertonghen - A couple of moments, but ok.

Davies - Nothing spectacular but did ok.

Dembele - I thought the game totally passed him by. Very little impact.

Mason - Worked hard, as per. Second half kept things ticking over well I thought. Pretty good game.

Lamela - A couple of good moments but frustrating in my opinion. As I said earlier in another thread, I thought he was pretty greedy at times and missed the chance to play in his team mates on about half a dozen occasions and in the second half he was the one who didn't really 'get' what we were trying to do in terms of moving the ball quickly.

Eriksen - Neat and tidy in the first half but I wasn't impressed with his defensive work/pressing. Far too passive and little resistance. Second half he did step up to the plate and was central in us probing away and looking to make the extra man count. This was capped with the winning goal which was good strike, as was the free kick for the equaliser... However, having said all this he does have to step up when its more of a contest.

Kane - Quiet at times but ok. One bad miss but popped up with another important goal. Looks to be holding onto the ball a bit better and getting used to the speed of the PL now.

Soldado - At times neat and tidy, but just doesn't look any sort of threat. The one chance he did get was a bad, bad miss. I just don't see how this gets turned around.

Subs:

Chiriches - Decent outing at right back, albeit when we were on the front foot with the extra man. His more adventurous mindset compared to Dier made a world of difference just for starters.

Lennon - Did ok also. Putting him and Chiriches on did make the pitch bigger and allowed us to make Hull do a bit more running and I believe open out the centre of the pitch a bit more. One great cross for Kane that deserved an assist.

Paulinho - I could see the thinking behind the sub. Lamela wasn't doing great and seemed a bit of a hindrance at that point and Paulinho I assumed would go up and be another body in the box. However he played deep and you noticed how much slower on the ball he was compared to the likes of Mason and Eriksen. You could see why Poch may not think he fits in...

We desperately need two full backs who can attack and get beyond the opposition's midfield. Rose can do this and we have young fb's coming through who can. Even Chiriches did it better than Dier and Naughtone usually do.

For me, right now, Lamela and Eriksen have to play whether we play 4231 or 433, and in this system full backs must provide the worth, stretch the opposition and provide a contrast to the inverted attackers.

We are narrow, but Lennon isn't an answer, we know this, we've seen him fail game after game year after year. He can't beat people and when the opposition sit deep he's completely moribund.

Even today he spent much more time inside than he did wide. And made just one successful pass into the box.

Walker's back in a few weeks. But I know you have an irrational hatred of him so....

Gotta back BC up here, it's not irrational at all. Walker has an uber erratic temperament which is totally incongruous to his job as a defender.

I hope poch can work on him though, we certainly need his pace up and down that line right now.

Still miles better than any other RB we have

Oh, and you're wrong ;)

BC will probably suggest that we play an 18-year-old who's looked decent for the U18s instead of Walker.

Walker was one of our best players last season before he got injured. I'm looking forward to him coming back, especially since Poch has completely turned Rose around for the most part.

I can guarantee you if we play both lamela and eriksen against everton we're gonna get battered. I think they can only play together in a 433 as it stands and that's not gonna happen.

Eriksen is not physical and has no interest in being so and that is a problem and it will prove to be restrictive in how we play him until poch has his way with the squad and can offer proper protection around him.

Chiri is much more adventurous down the flank but - you probably noticed - he did flick the suicide switch 2/3 times today and could well have given them a penalty for his nudge on whoever that chap was trying to score in the final mins.

We're a proper fucking mess.

Agree about the fullbacks: Yedlin, walker, fredericks battling it out for RB and Arw would be nice. Even using yedlin at LB on occasion just for the speed factor down that flank until we can flog rose and bring another LB in could be a solution.

Something like...

Lloris

Walker Dier Verts Yedlin

Mason Stambo

Fredericks Lamela/Eriksen Chadli

Kane
Would give us the flank range we need and Mason would be able to join in the attacks more freely knowing his partner woldn't be in the shit as the FBs and Ar/l wingers have good recovery in them.

Rose will be sold in the sumemr imo. I don't think it gets any betetr with him, he's a limited player.

Walker is a liability. But, yeah, looking forward to the technical work poch can do on him.

Just watching MOTD now, that tackle on Mason by Livermore was diabolical and the ref has a clear view of it and just completely bottles it. I'd much rather that was a red than the silly shit Ramirez did.

That was a red card all day long.

Refs are extremely reluctant to send 2 players off in a game. They don't want to risk it being wrong as it makes such a dent in a team.
