It’s because Aurier has a yard on Trippier and Costa would have two yards on him. Remember Aurier playing left to man mark Salah? Same principle.

Come on guys, love Tripps but there’s an obvious tactical reason why Aurier starts against Costa. Tripps would be awfully exposed unless we went 3 at the back which we probably
Will at Wembley.
I think Trippier is more suited with 4231, just look at the game against yanited he defended well against Sanchez and Young with Eriksen

Douglas Costa is unstoppable on his day. Trippier would've been worse imo. Maybe he wouldn't have conceded that penalty, but he would've lost more when facing him one on one
I believe by the various negative comments on here about Serge that those people don't realise that Aurier did well to contain Costa as well as he did. Didn't look good and Costa did get the better of him at times, especially for that mistimed tackle that resulted in the penalty, but over most of the match, he kept him back in their half. My main criticism of Aurier was his inferior crossing when compared to Trippier's. There were countless times when we would have been more offensive if he had the ability to cross first time from very good positions. But, he did manage to clip Costa's wings to an extent. Had Trippier played, he would have had a mare, where everyone would then be asking why Aurier wasn't playing!

Brilliant performance, just need to cut the errors out in the return leg and use the home advantage.

My favourite moment of the game, really all summed it up for me. In the 2nd half we had the ball around the Juve area, and were trying to pick our way through their catenaccio-like web of players blocking off passing lanes, when we cough it up.

Immediately we surge on them to press the ball, and who is it coming in to win it back, but Sanchez, our fricking centre half, pressing on the edge of the Juventus penalty area. He wins a tackle, and the ball then ricochets away to a Juve player, but the sheer balls of this team to play like that to a team like this... well it made me smile from ear to ear.

Got roasted by Sane against City.

Not arguing - think he's great. Just think he needs the protection of a back 3 against super fast wingers like Sane and Costa. Lacking Toby Aurier was always going to be the go to RB for this match up.

I can understand the logic of selecting Aurier for this, I just think the logic is slightly flawed as normally it would have Mandzukic out there and when they did switch Costa he did Aurier like a kipper anyway.

Let's not use Aurier as a scapegoat for every fucking thing.

Sanchez has made mistakes in the past with Trippier as a RB. In fact previous to Aurier's pen, Sanchez is the one who was marking Douglas Costa. He nutmegs him and Aurier comes from behind to cover him. He also made a bad pass in the second half with his head that could've costs us.
He had a good overall game though. But his mistakes are not Aurier's fault

Im not making Aurier the scapegoat for every fucking thing, Im acknowledging his short comings and position is one of them. He's frequently caught out like the Sanchez OG vs Soton when the winger had an unobstructed cross because Aurier was up the field. IMO he is the least disciplined of our fullbacks.

Take away the first 10 minutes and WOW. We went to Juventus and completely dominated them. That was an impressive performance. Great individual performances all over especially Dembele (apart from the stupid rash tackle that led to the first goal), Lamela, Alli and Eriksen (my MOM) who just ran the show - he'll have made a lot of big teams sit up and notice.
I don't like to criticize new signing as it often takes time to adjust to a new team, league etc but I'm sorry Aurier is rubbish - an continuous accident waiting to happen. That we paid good money for him instead of giving KWP a chance is criminal

Whilst I always loved Spurs, since seeing Ossie do ridiculous skills. This is becoming my favourite team of spurs.

Gave MOM to Eriksen, he deserved it, seems to be more responsible and more gritty, having more influence. That being said it could easily be given to Dembele or Lamela, just as easily and would be deserved. These 3 and also Vertonghen were carriers of the torch tonight, the torch or warriors.

The amazing thing is their goal was avoidable, we will learn from that. Same as the pens situ. Davies was incredibly unlucky, but aurier needs to start taking this a lesson. It's not the first time he's done this but he will lose the trust of the team if he continues to make mistakes like the pen.

We never gave up and forced ourselves upon Juve, with a desire not always seen from Spurs teams, I'm being deadly serious when I admit rewatching the highlights I cried. That's what this team is doing to me.

Lloris...read the pens well esp. no 2 some great saves also. 8

Aurier. 6 Silly lad, but was ok the pen aside. It seemed to bother him after, but FairPlay, he stood up and played his part like like a man

Sanchez 7 not looking like the colossus of earlier this season but a good showing, riding his quality at the moment.

Jan 8.5 - defender of the realm. So important to us, and some of those long passes where delicious.

Davies 7.5, solid mainly some decentish crosses unlucky with the pen, but he will learn to know where his man is even if he's not looking.

Dier 7.5 good shift, couple of stray passes could have hurt us but we got lucky, he needs to sort this out, but very decent overall.

Dembele. 8.9 - we all saw, well most of us. So impressive, strong, full of adventure but also protective. I understand why most voted him MOM.

Lamela 8.7 - tenacious fckr will skills of silk. Was a huge influence out there, was driving us. On mentally and physically.

Eriksen 9. Mom not just for the goal, but the way he imposed himself on the game, the extra grit and fire, the passion. Feel this drove the team on, but also great goal, lovely clip for Kane's header which should of scored. There was an air of responsibility from Him tonight that I've never seen in him before (to this level)

Alli - 7.75 Absolute king of end product. Decent performance but it's the way he influences games that gives him the crown. Even when others around him shine more, he influences more.

Kane - great goal, excellent movement for the run. Still not quite himself recently though, carrying an injury for the last month imo. 7.5

Moura had some touches didn't he, look forward to seeing more than a couple minutes from him.

Proud of my boys.....we are the talk of Europe.

Dembele was MOM.....and the reason , he stepped up and dragged us back in the match when we were 2-0 down and looked dazed, he was the main man who got hold of the game and everyone else followed.

Dembele take a fucking bow.

Character and determination are two things Spurs just weren’t associated with over the years.

We showed it last night.

But we also showed our niavity too, no getting around that, in fact we seem to be our own worst enemy at tines.

Better decision making at the back and we could be going back to Wembley with the tie practically over.

I have to say, I do love our ability to learn, even in game.

Kane galvanising everyone at kick off after it was 2-0 - love that shit.

Lamela, Dembele, Christian, Verts- can’t pick between them.

Something about the body language tonight shows how much we've grown as a team. Normally when going 2-0 down like that, Spurs players will either: stare at the floor waiting for it to open up, look up to the sky, shout at eachother, kick the floor in frustration or give some hyperbolic flappy 'come on guys' gesture.

Last night they all looked so unphased. Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela and Davies in particular had this dead cold expression of sheer focus throughout. Never mind conceding 2 in 10 mins, Allegri could have been shagging their wives on the touchline and it wouldn't have broken that trance. Even the little things like getting the ball back in play for throw ins and corners, Lamela/Davies would just hurtle themselves over the advertising boards into the stands to retrieve the ball.

'Spursy' needs to be redefined.

I was watching this game in South Africa and Tim Sherwood was one of the pundit.
He mentioned about training where the players couldn't het the ball off Dembele.

Most people wrote us off after 10mins. But we now have character and a strong mentality.

Dembele was beast.
MoPo midfield selection was excellent.

We had a shaky start but we were brilliant and have been for the past few games.

Dembele MOM but Eriksen, Lamela and Alli was all brilliant too.
Sanchez for a young defender was great purchase and IMO played well on a big stage. Credit to verts as well.

Great performance after a nightmare start, Aurier is a complete liability and cannot be trusted to not do something stupid. Fantastic game of football.

I still don't understand why KWP want given the battle to take over RB. But we did sign Aurier. If he could control his urge to line in when the man is past him in the area then he will become very good

Apart from the spelling of ‘new’, I agree with this. Aurier wasn’t as bad as some are making out.

The rash challenge for the penalty aside, I thought he had a decent second half and blocked numerous balls with his head to stop their counters. Always showed for an attack too, though would’ve preferred more (or better) crosses.

But he does need to cut out the rash challenges. If he’d stayed on his feet he may have been able to run the attacker out of play. Rush of blood and all that. Hopefully Poch will coach that out of him as time goes on.

Dembele MOTM obvs. Eriksen just behind, just. What a match the second leg will be. It will take a massive, massive effort to get through, but we can, which is unbelievable considering the first 10 mins. What a game.

Ffs I’m so embarrassed. I was tired, okay?

God I feel like s*** this morning

Everything has already been said here, great game to watch and Moose was brutal, Eriksen sublime, Lamela classy

Got to give credit to Davies. He looked in bits after giving away the pen, but he got his head back together really well.

Eriksen and Dembele were immense yesterday. Happy to see that the lads pulled themselves togheter and stuck with the gameplan. We dominated the game for most of the last 60 minutes and Dembele and Eriksen played a big part in that.
