Because he was trying to make stuff happen. He could get 90%+ by playing sideways and square but almost every ball he played forward, with no time on the ball. The stats can be misleading, how anyone could watch that second half and not be impressed with Mason is beyond me
He gave the ball away playing square 3 times in the 2nd half, the first rule a central midfielder should never break ! Then he tried a through ball under no pressure and gave it straight to jones. He never tracked mata all game hence his dominance and then missed our best chance. But yeh he was great! Hahaha

Will you admit you were wrong with Kane yet?
Yep. Been brilliant. Has won games for us, works hard, scores goals. Assists and is the best in his position we have got. I can't however say the same for a 23 year old Ryan mason. Does not deserve to be in our side ATM. Chelsea will eat him alive just like they did at the bridge when he was dragged.

I'm sorry right, but defensively we were awful today. Fazio and Verts and the whole back four lacked any shape, they clearly don't communicate properly. The midfield provided next to no defensive cover. We didn't press or close the ball down nearly well enough. Considering they were playing bloody wing backs Chiriches and Townsend did a woeful job of containing Young. Give me walker and Lennon any day, Young should of been rinsed.

Verts is hugely over rated, he's not a centre back, he's a left back. But he spat his dummy out about it and now we have a proper average CB instead of a good LB.

Davies did OK. United smashed the midfield battle but really if we'd just kept the ball better and been more patient we could of dictated the game and waited for United's absolute joke of a defense which could be mistaken for a championship outfit fuck it up and let us score.

Not raging, calling it like it is. We're good going forward, we've got some weapons and some really exciting prospects but our defense like most of the prems is a joke.

Fazio may well be able to head the ball but so could Dawson and he could direct it which Fazio can't seem to. I think we should expect more than that from a CB.

Everyone seems to be raving about Davies, is that because they don't like Rose? He played ok today, was decent in places going forward and defensively, however, he got absolutely done a couple of times today where he was caught flat footed.

Chadli never helps him tbf.

And he pisses all over Rose.

I based my initial assessment having only seen the match from just before half time. Having now watched the full match its clear that again Lloris is MOM followed by Faziobear

Haven't got a great deal of time to write down some substantial opinions on the game, but quickly...

I guess (without looking through the thread) that we all see things fairly similarly. The first half we were looking shaky at times and were very lucky not to be behind. The second half we nullified them pretty well and definitely finished the stronger team - the caveat being we never really looked like breaking them down and were very blunt going forward. The match did really end on a bit of a flat note.

I'd have preferred a 4-3-3, and think Poch needs to realise we are too open for games like this, but a decent, if not slightly fortuitous, draw and another point on the board.

Lloris - Lloris.

Chiriches - Did some daft things with the ball. First half he gave Young too much space, but as I keep saying I think this is a tactical issue and not the fault of the individual. Improved second half.

Fazio - Caught sleeping at times first half. Improved second half.

Vertonghen - Ditto.

Davies - Applies for him as well.

Stambouli - Couldn't say he wasn't working hard trying to plug gaps, but midfield was leaky.

Mason - Ditto. Cant fault his attitude and work rate but some of his play was a bit imprecise and his own fault eg. over-running the ball at times. Seems to be turning into Scott Parker with every passing game.

Townsend - Ok, and worked pretty hard. Some of the hate for him was laughable. Our only real outlet at times.

Eriksen - Couple of neat touches but we found it hard to get him in the game. Pussied out of challenges a number of times.

Chadli - Needs to put himself about more. Not really in the game.

Kane - Battled away but feeding off scraps. It would have been a great assist for Mason though and shows his all-round game.

Subs:

Dembele did well holding on to the ball. He seems to be getting deployed as a target man from the No.10 position, play it into his feet and he holds it up. Lamela didn't get into the game and I have no idea why he was brought on.

You never give players a chance, never give them a break, expect them to be world beaters when they first come into the team. They have to earn your support. All that is wrong with elements of our fanbase right there.

Mason worked hard but his lack of quality showed big time today.

Kane's composure to play him through, on the other hand...outstanding.
Mason's lack of quality? This is the guy who many say is one of the finest players to come out of our youth teams for decades?

I don't think lack of quality is fair. Lack of experience might be more accurate.

I'll take that from someone who has a clue, but you have just told me Ryan mason has run the game ! So keep your opinions to yourself

We are all being a bit harsh on Mason, myself included. I know he's older than most "home grown" players that we'll see breaking through into the first team, but this is still the boy's first dozen or so EPL games, having had a very stuttered development career.

We are all pointing the finger at the CM's again, but when we don't have the ball, the four ahead of them are a bigger problem and are causing the CM's and defenders to look worse than they are.

This is the problem with being a CM, you are caught in the middle of everything, no place to hide. You get stick if you're not creating, passing forwards or bombing into the box and scoring, and you get stick if you aren't running around stopping every attack and protecting your defenders. This is even more likely if you play a CM2 and you are frequently playing against 3's etc.

If you're numerically outnumbered and those around you aren't doing their jobs, you aren't going to look good. And all of our CM's this (and many previous) season have suffered because of these factors.

I'm really not sure Mason is going to be a long term solution, especially in any formation with a CM2, but he's got ability and he has got character. Two good building blocks. I'm still happy to see him out there trying to learn. But learn he must and quite quickly.

Your spot on about the front 4 but in this instance it's absolutely integral that your cm 2 keep the football and track runners. Even more so in games like today where we were under the cosh for large periods we need people to take the pressure off the back 5 and keep it for us, to run at the opponent and force them back15-20 yards. Ask any defender how nice it is when the pressure is alleviated because of a midfielder or attacker getting hold of it and settling us down. Mason was quite the opposite gave the ball away a staggering amount and gave us no platform in which to build. Stambouli broke it up better today and also passed the ball better yet peopl rave about mason ? He's 23 and he's homegrown great ! But you have to be quality to play for tottenham hotspur and he should not be a starter IMO

He's no world beater. But he's certainly comparable to our other options. And he's shown more potential and more willingness to try and play as the system requires... Dembele on the other hand is a known quantity who doesn't fit as well into the system.

He's not the problem... If you want to call something a problem to be fixed it's not him. And none of the other players we have would be the answer if he was the problem.

One of our main problems today was never being in the running for the first or second ball from the air.

They totally dominated us in the in this regard today and that caused us a big problem. Stambo and Mason aren't that good in the air tbf, bentaleb has his moments.

We do need a dominant figure to come in for us at CM2, hope Mitchell is well on the case.

I thought that was a bad advertisement for English football. Our pass completion rate was 67%, Utd's was 71%. 90mph, going-for-the-jugular stuff but with little in the way of quality approach play. Almost all of Utd's chances came about as a result of some kind of silly (often unforced) error from our boys.

Hugo Boss-9 Kept us in the game. His kicking was much improved today.

Chiriches-6 A mixed bag. Let Young cut inside once too often but did well against him, generally speaking. Perhaps he should have been sharper on the cover when Falcao had that wonderful chance about 19 minutes in. Some of his passing put us in trouble but he prevented an almost certain goal and very nearly played Chadli through in the second half. I prefer him to Walker at the moment.

Fazio-7.5 Caused us a couple of hairy moments but played well. Susceptible to the long ball over the top.

Vertonghen-6 Today's handbags with RVP reminded me of his bitch fight with Torres a season or two ago. I don't like that niggly stuff and it left me pining for Ledley King. Prone to losing his man when the ball is played over the top.

Davies-6 Shows genuine steel in the tackle, something which gives me the horn. Caught out once or twice when his man spun in behind him.

Mason-4 A Jack Russell when the job calls for a German Shepherd. Spends too much time on his arse and shows a worrying lack of composure on the ball. He put us in all sorts of trouble today and killed some very promising attacking transitions stone dead by coughing up possession far too cheaply.

Stambouli-4 What kind of midfielder is this guy supposed to be? Disappointingly weak in the challenge and offering next to nothing on the ball.

Townsend-5 Looked quick today. Didn't stick close enough to Chiriches (possibly because of poor concentration) but he ran hard to plug gaps when he realised the danger. Plays with no fear, came so close to providing on a few occasions but a lot of what he did with the ball was very poor indeed.

Eriksen-6 Disappointing display, off-the-ball workrate was insufficient in the first half, set pieces nothing to shout about.

Dempsey In Disguise-4 Irritated by his anaemic pressing and shoddy touch. Should have been off much earlier.

Thomas Müller-8 Might have done better with a couple of aerial balls but puts others to shame with his hustle and bustle. Played some of the tastiest passes of the game. Superb reverse ball for Mason.

Dembele- 6.5 Snatched Chadli's Michael Kors handbag from him and slapped him across the back of the head with it. Made an immediate impact as he put himself about and made himself available.

Lamela-5 No impact, didn't show any appetite for the occasion. His defensive work was nothing more than perfunctory. We really needed him to take some of Townsend's tablets and fucking run at people.

Pochettino-4 Made a mistake with his starting 11 and took far too long to remedy it. Amazing fitness levels, however, and I was crying out for extra time.

I admire and appreciate his efforts, but I don't think he's of the quality we require in cm at the moment.

He's not one of the finest players to have come out of our youth teams for decades. If he was, he'd have shown that by now.
