FWIW, the expected goal stats on 538 backup Jose's claim that they got their tactics rights, it was their execution that let them down. The expected goals from where the shots were taken and who took them was slightly in our favor, 1.6-1.7, and the non-shot expected goals was actually in their favor, 2.2-1.3. The difference was our greater degree of skill (and some luck). In addition to Lukaku missing the gimme from Rose, Fred couldn't get the curl to convert, Lingard had a deflection go just over the crossbar, Lloris made a nice save on a point-blank shot from Lukaku (and i'm probably forgetting some others). On the other hand, our first two goals certainly had a high degree of difficulty from where they were shot - Kane's header was from distance, Maura's goal and Eriksen's assist had to go through a bit of traffic to find their targets.

Of course, being a manager is not just about getting the tactics right, it is also about getting your players to execute to the top of their ability.

I think he improved, but then he was our worst player first half. Would much rather see Big Vic in there though.
Big Vic is a worry with his injury rec. It has been a long time since we have seen him fit and playing the way he can.

I don't think there's any doubt that United had the better of the game in the first half, and had they scored any of their chances it would have been a totally different affair. Playing against a Mourinho team with a 1 or 2 goal lead at home is a near impossible task.

I think we still have a lot to work out before Liverpool comes to Wembley.

“Fucking shit” is very harsh. Was going to give him 6 but he hasn’t played much football recently and it wasn’t an easy game to come into as Man U came out the blocks fast and our whole defence was very shakey not just Rose in the first 25mins.

And with the ball I thought he was decent always looked forward and was very positive and he gradually improved throughout the game.

personally thought Rose didnt have a good game, however he needs games to sharpen up, he looked rusty.

Toby was a rock better than a new signing, Lucas was a super star and we fought hard i dont think we gave away many chances except for the back pass.

Perhaps I am being overly hopeful because I don't believe Dier is good enough, for the big games at least.

I think a very good marker is could you realistically see Real Madrid come in for player. And instantly you highlight our weakest areas.

Rose/davies- no chance
Dier- no chance
Dembele- in his prime possibly but not now.
Dele- borderline for me. Although most knowledgeable spurs fans appreciate him. He’s not that easy on the eye and if Son were to hit top form and moura carries on like this his spot could be in danger. However you can’t argue with his numbers.
Moura- if he carries on like this then yes. Remember he was once held in the same regard as Neymar.

For me the rest last night Madrid would. I’m including Trippier as they were linked ? and his stock is very high. But this only goes to show what we pretty much already know and the obvious areas we could strengthen.

Wasn't good at all tbh. Constantly out of position, and resorting to silly obvious fouls because he didn't have the pace to get back. Might just be lack of game time, but with everything that has gone on with him in the last 12 months or so I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a lot more to it.

Porto was over 14 years ago, different times, different players and different managerial competition and I think he was hungrier back then and during his first Chelsea stint anyway.

I think since then he has had jobs where he hasn't had to coach players as such, he's always bought in players who are either near or at their peak and his players have had the mentality of winners...his Chelsea and Inter teams were the perfect embodiment of him.

However this day and age I think players need to be nurtured and managed differently, there's not many captains and leuitenants playing especially compared to a decade ago for example so ultimately players rely on man management and encouragement which is something he doesn't excel at, and the fact that 3 of his direct rivals are know for excellant man manager skills and their coaching just exposes him even further.

Jose was once an excellant coach but his coaching methods in this day and age are just outdated.

Maybe or maybe his styles changed, I don’t think his players look very well drilled. I don’t think we have got going yet this season but our defence look a well drilled unit yes we have had blips but it’s 3 games in you can see we are close to clicking. United look so disjointed.

Just chiming in on Dier. He played his part just fine. Their midfield had no rhythm or consistency. He was breaking up play and doing the small things.

Deserves a lot more praise than some on her continue to give him.

Lucas my MOTM though
Thought Rose improved a lot after *that* pass. I’d keep with him because he offers us so much more than Davies.

Yes, I'm another one who misses B.C's excellent reports on the different matches we play. Hopefully he'll be back.

A failed coup d’etat apparently. Or he got hoisted by his own petard. I don’t even know what the fuck anything means anymore anyway

Fell off the rear platform of his omnibus
and straight under a passing police car.

Or was he pushed?
The emails will tell all.

BC is on the fighting cock forum.
As an AVB disciple, he absolutely loathed our performance against Utd.
Which went down well over there, as you can imagine.

People write stupid stuff sometimes, but he is an interesting poster, who will be missed.

fucking, hell. really? we were much better than that in the second half. and not a disgrace in the first either. it's as simple as, if you put rusty Rose in the team at the moment, you're unsettling the team from the get-go. i know his pace was a tactical requirement, but overall, he's been a shambles for a long while now. but anyways..

edit: this was a reply to bc's post copied from another forum and now deleted again. a predictably scathing post by bc.

I don't think we are entitled to pick BC's post apart on here, when he has no right of reply.
Seems a bit mean, but I sort of started it.
Sorry.
