I hope Pochettino breaks his ankle this week because it is so far up someone's arse, that it breaks pulling it out.

These are my conclusions. Lloris, Vertonghen and Eriksen are the only nailed on choices.

Rose is inconsistent but so far nothing suggests Davis is any better.

Kaboul is awful, Chiriches is worse and Fazio don't know yet.

Dyer, no other options right now.

Capoue to me is just not good enough. We need energy in front of our back 4 so why shin Stambouli if he is not hoping to play ?

There is a lot of hype about Mason and he does some good things but is he really top 4 material ?

Chadli has shown he can score goals but not much else.

Lamela is great for Europa where he has more time but to me it's a choice between Eriksen and Lamela in the EPL and it has to be Eriksen. Unless Eriksen plays wide left and Lamela at no 10. But I would rather see Chadli there .

Adebayor and Soldado are just not up to it.

    I would go with :

    Lloris

    Dyer, Fazio , Vertonghen, Rose,

Townsend ( reluctantly ) Stambouli, Dembele, Eriksen,

    Chadli ( or Lamela )

    Kane

Still won't be a top 4 team but probably good enough not to slide down the table towards danger which is where we are heading .

Decent........Rose and Mason. Chose Rose as MOM as he at least did ok-ish in both halves.
    Not bad.......Lloris...Erikson.
    Poor............Lamela, Kaboul,Vertonghen, Ade,Dier,
    Indecent.....Capoue,Chadli.

    Game of two halves what?
Ungentlemanly Conduct to score within 10 seconds of restart surely.
Not sure it was even the same two sides that turned out for both halves.
If you don't laugh you'll probably cry.
Is Poch trying to prove a point. If so what is it?

    Lloris - 6 - Not his fault.
Dier - 5 - Sloppy. He's a good player, but not a right back. Naughton and/or Walker can't come back soon enough.
Kaboul - 5 - Defensively decent. Awful distribution of the ball.
    Vertonghen - 5 - Lazy.
    Rose - 4 - Had a shocker today.
    Capoue - 5 - Not great.
Mason - 7 - A rarity in our team today inasmuch as he actually wanted the ball.
Eriksen - 7 - Seemed to be doing it all by himself for most of the second half.
Chadli - 5 - Decent first half, should have done much, much better with his chance just before half time. Completely anonymous second half.
Lamela - 5.5 - Tried hard but had little impact, partly because Newcastle decided that as he displayed some skill on Thursday he should be kicked whenever he had the ball.
Adebayor - 4.5 - Scored, but aside from that offered nothing and contributed nothing. Absolutely baffled how he was in the starting line up today. Needs to be sold ASAP.

    Subs
Kane - 5 - Never really got into the game.
Lennon - 4 - Besides blazing a shot over the bar I don't remember him doing a single thing.
Soldado - 5 - Had pretty much no time to have any kind of impact.

Pochettino - 4 - Poor decision starting Adebayor ahead of either Kane or Soldado who both had excellent games against Asteras and Man City respectively. No idea what was said at half time to result in such a pathetic start to the second half. Substitutions were too late and had no impact.

So do seemingly a lot of others. My overriding memories of Rose today were giving a shit pass to Chadli (who was surrounded by at least two opponents and had nowhere to go and ended up losing the ball) when he had at least two options inside, and a couple of occasions where the ball had been passed for him to run on to and he pretty much stood still looking at it.

I don't think he's the pile of crap a lot of people were scapegoating him for last season, and he's largely been decent so far this season, but errors have crept back into his game, such as the backheader which led to City's fourth goal. Maybe I was being a bit harsh on him, but I don't think he had a very good game today. Which, to be fair, is the same for pretty much everyone.

The Europa League screws us every season. We always look flat the next game.

MOM - Rose. The rest were pure garbage except Mason was was good in the first half. Lamela was absolute dogshite.

The main reason I'm prepared to write off this season league-wise (in exchange for good cup runs and to see the team really start to gel properly over the course of the season) is to avoid EL next season.

How on earth are we getting worse not better. I just can't get my head around it. I am also not sure why we didn't rest more players on Thursday. Dier, Lamela, Jan, Capoue and Ade all looked very much off the pace. Saying that Ade should in no way have started this match regardless of Thursday, he offers nothing game in game out at the moment. I really just don't see us getting any better any time soon unless we go shopping in Jan big time.... But we won't so I fully expect us to stay around mid table. Poch was poor today, not knife sharpening time by a long shot but if we don't win any of our next two/three/four league games questions will be asked regardless of whether or not one thinks they should be.

All a bit depressing, isn't it? Yet more evidence that there is a fuckload of work to do, major decisions to make, and both players and manager need to seriously buck up their ideas.

First half, yeah did ok. Newcastle couldn't have made it easier for us though. Second half, aided by a calamitous goal, the heat was turned up on us a bit (though, we weren't exactly facing an epic battling performance) and as per usual too many of our players just couldn't hack it.

I've tried to point this out recently, and I think its become clearer today... I think the major issue is that we have players in key positions who quite frankly cannot be trusted, and shouldn't be given so much responsibility, at this stage of their career with us. It applies to more players than these individuals, but the majority of our play goes through Capoue, Eriksen and Lamela. All three seem to me, whether this is due to age/experience or whatever, the same... If they have an armchair ride it looks great, however put them under the slightest bit of pressure, make the game a bit more frenetic and don't let them play the game at their relaxed tempo and things quickly unravel. I've used the word 'flimsy' over the last couple of months and I still think its the best word to describe some of our players. It's all well and good looking like world beaters against weak opposition but when it comes to the crunch and a bit of pressure is exerted, where we desperately need to be calm, collected, and keep the ball, these three in particular either go missing (Capoue) or resort to poor decision making and losing the ball when we can ill afford to and the team falls apart (the other two). If these players don't start stepping up to the plate during a bit of adversity then its going to be the same result again and again.

Obviously we need individual improvement across the board, but these are the guys critical to our play and where I feel things need to start clicking as a matter of urgency.

Another major problem, as I said in another thread, is that we got yet another example today of what I class as just a bad 'culture' that seems to have infested the club over recent seasons. We seem to have a bunch of players that are unable to focus and be committed at all times. There aren't any standards being set and leaders to make sure these are adhered to. That equalising goal today was an absolutely disgraceful one to concede, and if it was me I'd fine every single player a couple of weeks wages because this isn't the first time its happened (see Man City last season). We saunter out late for the second half, as happens every week and did last year too, players are still fiddling with socks, Vertonghen isnt even watching, instead seeking out Rose for a conversation and the rest of them seem to be taken by surprise that kick off is taken (get out there quicker and you might be ready for it!!), Dier was just the one who ultimately got exposed. They were all culpable.

Really what's required is for a new manager to come in and make this his number one priority. The first thing he should do is lay down the law, set a number of standards and anyone who doesn't meet them is out. You build everything on that. If we are to progress, which is tricky for a club our size, we need to leave no stone unturned and have players that are 100% focused and committed at all times and show a bit of professionalism. Not the disorganised rabble we have seen today and keep on seeing. Over to you Poch...

I've also got issue with some of Poch's selections. Specifically how narrow we are as a team. The best possession teams still play with width on either side, it gives them an out ball and occupies the opposition across the pitch. If he wants to play a narrow three behind the striker, fine, but the defensive minded fullback on the right needs to go, this is very reminiscent of AVB and something that pisses me off. I know options are limited but he's sending us out with a stunted team that is easy to contain.

I could go on about defensive issues, pressing game again not functioning, overplaying at times etc.... What's the point though, it just needs to get better. And soon, please.

Lloris - Another game that must push him closer to packing his bags. Enjoy him whilst you can, folks...

Dier - Disastrous second half. Sad to see a kid just lose all confidence out there. Back to centre back for his sake ASAP I hope.

    Kaboul - Meh.

    Vertonghen - Ditto.

Rose - Got up and back and to be honest at least showed a bit of urgency. Final ball needs to improve but this is a good improvement so far this season and I guess we cant expect everything at once...

Capoue - When the going got a bit tougher, this one decided he wasn't really up for it. Must step up to the plate when the pressure is on.

Mason - Good first half, positive and full of energy. Lovely clipped ball for the goal. Second half saw less ball and was then expected to hold the 'midfield' together with the subs...

Lamela - I wrote in detail above about what is needed from him.

Eriksen - Ditto. Although he was the best of the three behind the striker, and worked quite hard.

Chadli - Wasteful in the first half, anonymous in the second. Poorest game of the season from him.

Adebayor - Started ok, scored, then it fizzled out. Not helped by the team though, it doesn't matter who are striker(s) is if the attacking midfielders give it away before they can get involved... He could work harder though.

    Subs:
    Lennon - No real impact.
Kane & Soldado - Linked up well once, both guilty of fluffing a reasonably good opportunity though towards the end.

We haven't had a really good transfer window since before we got into the CL and have made two poor managerial appointments previous to Pochettino. That's why we're getting worse.

But the specific reason as to why we've struggled since the two first games of this season for me is the mentality of the players and the entire club. Burdened by expectation and nobody being strong enough to handle it and nobody willing and able to grab a game by the scruff of the neck.

I would understand if the opposition was Man City, Chelsea etc...
    But Newcastle???
Worse of all you can't put belief into players without the results coming in first....you only need to look at Liverpool.
I don't think it's Poch's fault but we need the players to have more courage in this team. I'm missing VdV.

Significant game imo . We may remember this game as the one where serious doubts started . When a new manager comes in its always a question...will the players get on board with his ideas ?

In our case will the manager known for athletic pressing teams be able to motivate at a club where a minimum effort culture has taken root over years ? This was the game where an answer suggested itself .

2 factors exacerbated this , 1. the 'its only Newcastle' mentality , go a goal up and cruise 2. The Europa which turns us towards jelly the next match (check the history) Not an excuse of course especially with a home EL match .

Drop offs in form of key personnel , double right backs injuries ....and players who clearly don't like the physicality of the PL (a worry they never will ) have made things worse .

With players eager to implement his philosophies Poch can do things . His glowering face the last couple of matches (inc the 5-1 EL win) tells a story .

The worst of it all , as others have said , is we seem to be going backwards after a good start . This carries on another 3-4 matches and there'll be upheaval . The prob for Poch being that he has no CV of success to maintain board-level support .

Lets see now if the players/management can turn this round . I hope so .
