What Pochettino is doing picking Sissoko is anyone's guess. When you think of the players that haven't been able to get a fucking break in this side - it's utterly baffling. It's been a long time since I've seen a player so technically deficient at this level.
Joking aside, I honestly couldn't see a difference in his level of play to that of the Newport players. He really is low on confidence. A shadow of once might have been a half decent player. Far more concerning is Poch's trust for the guy. It's a shame he didn't feel confident enough to play one of the young uns. They certainly couldn't have done much worse.

At the massive risk of being shouted out of here, I thought Sissoko did OK, he was always available, keep the ball moving, often quickly and was pretty much all over the pitch. I'm not saying it was a fantastic performance by any means but he did as well as most and wasn't anywhere near as bad on the night as some people are suggesting against opposition that weren't difficult to play against. Yes, he gave the ball away sometimes but then again so did a number of our players, it just (IMO) sticks in the memory more because we're looking for it.

Often times he just gets stick because he's Sissoko and I think last night was one of those times.

There. I said it. Should I feel dirty?

Its the old bandwagon mentality. If he is shit to begin with then he always will be. I thought he played well and he has done a good job most the time he has turned out this season. I can see why Poch picks him.

The more i see Foyth the more i see a future holding midfielder....so young but composed, mobile technical and can pass.

Foyth aka the Heir apparent to super Jan. Looks like a mini rolls Royce of a defender.

Shout out to my boy Erik Lamela (aka fuck Franny G) on this one, ripped it up with some tasty passing and movement and a lovely little finish.

The Sissoko platitudes virus has even infected A&C. There will be none of us left soon.

It reminds me of the parents down at my son’s football on a Saturday. They drone on about the odd good thing their kid does, when in reality, everyone else is just pleased they’ve managed to tie their shoe laces up correctly and not fallen over when bringing the oranges on.

Hard to be moved by any of that really. Newport are a pub team. Our ability to piss in opportunity's mouth repeatedly is a worry. We fucked away several good chances against Utd, wasted a 1v1 and penalty v Liverpool and missed a fuck load tonight as well as wasting numerous other situations.

Wanyama was the galvanising factor for me in that first half, took the game by the scruff of the neck, not only competing in those early minutes when they were having a huff and puff at pressing us, but also was the one that got on the ball and pushed us forwards (thinking about it, it was actually his pass that put Eriksen in behind that led to our first goal against Liverpool) it was his vertical ball to Son that initiated the second goal tonight too. Good run out for Wanyama, great to have him back firing.

Winks was a bit disappointing. Played a lot of passes two yards straight back to the guy that passed to him, and what he does when we don't have the ball still needs work. But then the kid's yet to play a consecutive set of games, and this was another "first game back after a while out" so early days.

Lamela clearly had moments, but I thought he fucked about a bit too.

Son started off fucking about but then got better when he remembered he doesn't have to try and be Harry Kane and shoot from every fucking where.

Aurier and Rose were involved but gave us very little of quality in terms of producing anything composed in the final third. KWP looked more purposeful and sure footed going forward in his 6 minute cameo.

Foyth and TA were OK, but then the opposition offered almost nothing offensively so I'd be worried if they weren't.

Hey ho.
Usually when it’s a mish mash xi v plucky upstarts you’re quite acceptant of the inevitable issues this brings so I’m somewhat surprised by your tone, did you have a bad day?

Agreed with the frustration with Sissoko, not so much him per se but the minutes he’s taken from others. Hopefully the well stocked AM/ flanks department we now possess means that in the summer he departs and Edwards has an opening off the back of a successful loan spell.

Bullet, the fact that you stated in the op that people should focus their attention on Llorente instead of Sissoko before anybody had even given ratings just tells me you are trying to deflect.

I have no idea why but I have a feeling it might be because a few on here are getting a little upset that Sissoko is constantly being criticised, they think it’s a personal attack against him and feel the need to defend him.

Well I hate to tell you, it’s not a contrarian viewpoint to think he is a bad footballer or that he has played badly for us, this is actually the only place I see people actually suggesting he has done well for us, I can’t understand why some are not seeing it, it’s not even debatable at this point really.

I mean, I can take your point about how it was close tonight because Llorente was shockingly bad but still match ratings are a matter of opinion.

I don’t want to derail anyway about Sissoko, it was a good performance, we are through to the next round, that’s that.
As with every other thread. People are just micro analysing everything he does wrong. And then magnifying it to suit their agenda. Which is simply GET HIM OUT. Poch picks him. That should say more about the player that what people on here think. I still can’t fathom why people don’t get this? Is Poch just doing it to troll you lot? Or does he actually bring something to the table?

Vorm 6 Did what needed doing. Impersonating Lloris with sideways passes along the goal line to a defender stuck in the corner doesn't float my boat though.
Aurier 6 Did OK. No real end product after getting in some good positions.
Rose 6 Ditto.
Foyth 7 Looked very assured after the initial cavalry charge. Coming along nicely.
Alderweireld 7 Bring a level of calmness to the backline we've really missed. Looks ready for the NLD.
Wanyama 7 Getting there. Got stuck in and put in a shift.
Winks 7 Moved the ball around nicely and found plenty of space which he used constructively. Great to have him back.
Lamela 8 MOM. Picked and probed at their backline. Intelligent player who looks at home at 10.
Son 7 Worked hard. Got in some nice positions but didn't produce anything pf note.
Llorente 6 We don't play to his strengths. Good hold up play on the odd occasions we played it long. Some nice touches in there but desperately needs a goal.

Sissoko 6 Worked hard as he always does but it doesn't produce much.
Eriksen 7 Class player. Love seeing him and Coco on the same pitch.
Dele 6 Just do the simple things FFS. Nutmegs and flicks over the top that produce nothing instead of showing real purpose.
KWP 6 Didn't do anything wrong but needs a go at RWB.

I wonder if Sissoko will be a cult hero like Steffan Freund in 30 years.

I don't see where all the hate comes from. We all know he was terrible last season. He's been fine this season and I suspect Poch picks him as he will play anywhere he is asked, in whichever way he is asked, and appears to work very hard for the team. He is very limited as a technician but too many cooks and all that. He reminds me a little of Darren Fletcher under Fergie at Utd. Not great individually, but important to the collective.

It's little wonder if he is low on confidence when there is constant groaning every time he mishits or miscontrols the ball.

Had a job keeping Spurs fan wife awake in a dull 2nd half .

Lamela and Aurier looked OK , Wanyama is getting back to his best which is great news .Llorente was crap at shooting , but he does do neat short passes which I like .

Winksy just didn't grab this opportunity to make a claim , yes , coming back from injury etc , but his lack of ambition against a League 2 team was a big disappointment to me. Contrast with the returning Rose who wasn't particularly effective , but was really trying to make an impression . Is this the difference between star and also ran ?... Ambition , determination .

Yeah, a very low-key performance and game in the end. The first circa 20 mins were absolutely crap from us, then just as we were starting to get the ball down and stringing some passes together in their half we got a goal, and that seemed to knock the early bravado out of them and it settled into the predictable pattern as they sat back and we just controlled the ball. 1-0 quickly became 2-0, you're wondering what score we could run up, but the game then meandered on..... Some nice moments, but mostly we were strolling it, but also a little wasteful and quite a few errors at times you have to say.

Job done, but not a game to remember.

Vorm - Hardly anything to do until the save at the end. Thought his passing was really poor, almost always underhit and behind the man.

Aurier - He had a couple of decent interceptions/covering play towards the end, before that I honestly thought he was the worst player on the pitch for either team. Sloppy with the ball, half asleep at times, positionally was caught out on umpteen occasions.... For me he had a poor game.

Foyth - Had a couple of moments he was lucky to get away with, and needs a bit of work on his positioning at times, but looks a decent prospect.

Alderweireld - Hardly tested. Use of the ball got better as the game went on.

Rose - Was guilty of over-playing a few times, but I thought he was a decent outlet and got up and down the flank well.

Wanyama - Started a bit slowly but was a solid platform in the middle of the park.

Winks - Had a lively, busy start, and then went into his shell a bit towards the end. Maybe tiredness kicked in.

Sissoko - I thought he had a decent enough first half. Popped up in some good positions and was getting involved. The second half reverted a bit more to type.

Lamela - Was lively, had some nice passages of play, but I agree with those who say there were also an awful lot of moments of fuckaboutery and he misses so many chances (as do others in the team) to turn and go forward.

Son - Decent enough, without being spectacular.

Llorente - It doesn't get better for him does it. Clearly all dynamism and desire has gone, which is creating problems. I thought his hold up play was mostly neat and tidy enough and he linked play well at times.... He just cant get a goal. The header was a disappointing effort, but I thought the shot just sums up how it's going. He does everything right, catches it clean as a whistle, but somehow it sneaks outside the post rather than inside. Crisis time.

I thought that was a pretty strong side to be honest. I was disappointed we didn't press them better, and force the kind of errors that we could capitalise on and expose them more first half. And the players out there were all of suitable quality to make better use of the sistuations and chances they did create second half.

I'm not apoplectic with rage, but I wasn't overly impressed with much of it either.

I'm going to be honest but does anyone else think Winks as gone back to type with his displays.

When he first came onto the scene he was very brave on the ball, passing the ball forwards looking to play players in, these days he's happy just to pass the ball sideways and backwards.

Do you think he's just easing himself in or gone back to default mode for a typical English Midfielder?

Just to add, I was fucking extremely unimpressed with Alli and particularly Eriksen being thrown into that game.

It was a completely unnecessary risk. Especially to chuck both in.

I have been very critical this season regarding our lack of press especially in the league,, but considering the situation with a number of those players coming back from lengthy lay offs I expect the remit for most of them was to just get through it exerting as little energy as possible.
