The thing I love about Lamela is he's trying. He's not hiding, he's not playing with fear, he's really trying. The fact that he's making mistakes is massively encouraging, because he's also creating to.

All part of the learning process. Would be much more concerned if he wasn't being noticed at all and was having next to no impact.

He's already made several assists and is really starting to catch the eye. A bit more patience and we're going to be richly rewarded IMO.

I'd actually like to see Townsend pull him aside and let him know that its ok to shoot inside of 20 yds. A little more selfishness would be welcome on occasion.

Pretty hard game to analyse. Whilst there were encouraging signs to take away from it I don't think the result was as clear cut as I have seen some make out. However its a good win against a form side and we battled away for it.

I thought the performance itself was patchy. The first 10 minutes we started energetically, and we saw the first real concerted efforts at pressing high up the pitch and actually getting in a teams faces'. Whilst off the ball the tempo/urgency started high, when we had it we also seemed to move it quicker.
However the next 20-25 mins were then quite poor I thought. Southampton had most of the ball and fashioned a couple of decent openings, the pressing game kinda stopped and we didn't do a good job of keeping what possession we had. However for the last 10-15 mins of the half we suddenly sprung in to life again, rediscovered the pressing game and it was in this period we scored the goal and should have doubled our lead. This is when we were at our best.

Second half I thought was a bit niggly and disrupted with a lot of fouls, with neither team on top. We had a couple of half decent opportunities, they had a couple that were even better. We kept the work rate up though and managed to see it out for the win. I wouldn't say we were hanging on at any point but neither did we seem in total control.

Overall though there are encouraging signs to take from today and the win could be the confidence boost they need. There was a greater urgency with and without the ball and in patches you saw the potential things that this team could do. I said a few weeks ago that I thought Poch was maybe feeling his way into the job and a bit disappointed that he was easing his way in and gradually changing things much like AVB did, well maybe today we have seen that this week he has finally thought 'fuck it' and decided its time that the team played how he wants them to and no-one is being accommodated anymore. Lets hope so.

Got to keep improving and build on it though...

Lloris - Started off with some bad kicking (again). One good save and did all he had to do in the second half.

Naughton - Ok till he got crocked.

Kaboul - A game where the ball seemed to follow him, even when he was stationed in far flung outposts such as the left wing. Defended mostly well, but there were 4/5 times where he ignored a team mates call/instructions and made things more difficult for us than they needed to be.

Vertonghen - Another good game.

Rose - Ditto.

Capoue - There was a 5-10 min spell where I thought he went off the boil, but for the most part a strong presence in the centre of the park and moved the ball well. Good game.

Mason - Not a huge impact, but neat and tidy and worked hard.

Lamela - Was either showing moments of quality/talent, or poor decision making and dawdling on the ball a bit. It was from one extreme to the other. Worked hard out on the right and tracked back well a couple of times. Poor set pieces.

Eriksen - Did ok. Good strike for the goal.

Chadli - Quietly went about his work, but was involved in the goal and burst through to hit the post. His willingness to get ahead of the game and make runs in behind are much needed.

Adebayor - Bit of a slow start but he grew into the first half. The ball mostly stuck and he looked quite lively, largely made the goal and released Chadli for his chance. Second half not as impactful as the game got a bit stop start. Also put in a bit more of a shift before flagging a bit towards the end. Better.

Subs:

Dier - Filled in at RB pretty well. Looks a very good bit of business.

Dembele - Not much time but didn't get into it.

Kane - n/a.

Verts MOTM imo. His defending in the second half where he closed the guy with the ball and covered his option of a ball across our box, which they wud have scored was brilliant.

That was the best game he has had in a loooong time. He was concentrating on defending alone today rather than trying to do too much with the ball.
I hardly noticed he was playing which I like in a CB. Pelle was nowhere to be seen to Verts credit.

What's clear to me is that we're a seriously tough crowd when it comes to appraising our own performance.

Just about every single Southampton opinion I've come across states we were easily deserved winners.

Yes, plenty room for improvement etc, but come on people.

Some fans are never happy.
If we get anything from the next game, it still won't be good enough.

Agree with DM and BBLG. Good atmosphere today at least in SE corner.

Very impressed with how Rose has kicked on this season. He was my MoTM.

Applied Mathematical theorem.

For me, in many ways, this was our best performance under Pochettino. Against in in form, tactically very astute, good footballing opponent we were the best we have been without the ball. The pressing was much more cohesive and was performed in various levels including higher up, but was at least in evidence throughout the game, not just in a 15 minute spell at the start. Against a very competitive Southampton, who clearly haven't forgotten all they learned from Pochettino in this respect, it had to be.

This was a numbers game. Pochettino's 4231 v Koeman's 433. What we saw was Southampton's extra midfielder making sure they just edged the numerical battle in midfield, but with our extra man in attack we always seemed to have more options when we were in that final third than they did when they were.

What greatly helped also was that for the first time this season every single one of our attacking players were alive, and as a group, had by far their most joined up game. There was some really nice interplay between all of them.

What was also very pleasing was that bar that one great chance at the end we stopped them creating very much at all.

I thought one of the reasons the numbers game went our way was Capoue, who was once again very good with and without the ball. Schniederlin 27m, Capoue 8m ? The number game eh ? It's so hard for a CM2 to battle with a CM3, especially one as decent as Southampton's, and while our CM2 didn't exactly came out on top all the time, they kept it close enough to make the vital difference and give our attacking 4 the chance to make their numerical advantage count.

Today was another tough test for Mason, and though he didn't really influence the game greatly, I thought he was competent. Very hard to shine against that very strong CM3, and he'll hopefully have easier days than his first two outings for the first team.

Most pleasing was the fact that Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli and Adebayor all turned up. There were some really nice little interchanges, including for the goal. Lamela was the standout for me. It's easy to be critical of him, he needs to learn sometimes not to try so hard to do something outstanding and occasionally just lay a simple ball off, but what you have to realise is that he is constantly making things happen, he takes risks on the ball and as he matures he'll learn to ration those better, but you need him to be doing what he's doing right now. I like that his head never goes down. If he fucks up, 5 minutes later he's trying to beat someone else or playing a through ball. And best of all, he works off the ball for the team with real purpose, not just that bullshit shadow pressing that Lennon does, but gets stuck in. It's a great combination.

This was never an open lottery affair with chances galore, or an attack v defence bus park, it was a tough tactically proficient tussle between two teams who both pressed well and tried to move the ball quickly, and I enjoyed it all the more for that. Players needed to be be snappier on the ball, and by and large they were.

We had short spells of domination and so did they. I thought we always looked more dangerous with ours.

At 1-0 with 15 minutes to go, and them getting on top, I was thinking put Dembele on for Eriksen or Lamela, and match up the midfield numbers and try to kill the game, luckily for us, Koeman did it for us, swapped a CM for Long and all of a sudden we were bossing the game again and had a really good ten minute spell than helped quell their momentum some what.

If this game had been a draw or a narrow win for either team you couldn't have complained too much, but most pleasing was the performance. We were snappier with and without the ball.

Individual stuff:

Lloris - Excellent between the sticks, but needs to not put defenders under pressure with his passes under pressure at times.

Dier - Generall OK but I don't like him as a RB and always seems a bit vulnerable to me defensively and doesn't offer much in an attacking sense and playing with inverted attacking players we need that.

Kaboul - Pretty decent.

Vertonghen - Quietly efficient today, which is nice to say about him.

Rose - Very good game. Really like his tenacity. He's not the smartest cookie always but he at least embraces the remit of a FB in our system and tries to join in attacks frequently. I thought his distribution out of defence was very good at times, finding a spurs shirt under pressure at times instead of just humping.

Capoue - Very good game - This guy has so many facets to his game. He tackles (our most prolific tackler today), reads and intercepts, passes long and short both feet (our most completed/most forward passes today) can move with the ball and isn't easily flustered off it.

Mason - A competent performance in a tight game against good CM3. Kept things simple. He'll need a few games before we see his best I reckon, but he'll get better chances to show what he can do.

Lamela - Very good game. Needs to lay a simple ball off occasionally instead of trying to do something more difficult, but I thought his decision making was actually pretty decent today overall and he keeps making chances. Unlucky not to score.

Eriksen - Good game - Turned up today, linked up well, played some nice quick tempo stuff.

Chadli - Decent game - Really unlucky not to get on the score sheet, nice quick little pass to Eriksen for the goal and generally worked hard for the team with and without the ball.

Adebayor - Form wise, still not uber Adebayor, but this was a big improvement on what we've seen so far this season. Had a hand in the goal build up I think (memory ?) and set up Chadli. But most importantly was constantly involved and took part in the group pressing sessions.

Capoue clear MOTM. Think a lot of people are very generous in their ratings. Not a great performance, barely a real shot on goal second half. Lamela busy, Mason pretty non existent first half, Rose played well, Chadli a striker not a winger/inside forward on today's evidence.

Kaboul and averts solid, Naughton having a poor game before he went off, cross came in that he just missed and let them in at the back post, couple of crosses to nowhere.

We're a tough crowd? No chance, think we're far too quick to praise an average performance personally.

Nice to see a range of opinions on MOM, think that sums up the game really.

I enjoyed it as a match, they are a good side and we just about edged it. Lots of progress on show and the reacion to the whistle shows you who gives a shit from our side.

Loris - 7
Rose - 7, kept his head together
Kaboul - 6.5 - not a red, Mane is a girl
Verts - 7 looks proper good again
Naughton - 6, nice interception shame about the challenge (should have been a red, not malicious but...)

Capoue - 7.5 tenacious and loved the reaction, that there is spirit
Mason - 6.5 good, solid and looks promising
Erikson - 7.45 yeah, nearly MOM for me, good movement and pressing more
Lamela - 7 was waiting to see him dribble his way into form - but its his passing that's starting to look great

Chadli - 6.5 very unlucky not to score
Ade - 6 better but lost the ball too much

good subs (after all the pre-match blurb), tough game to hold a lead in and one that either side could have scored in..

Not sure if that's aimed at me Bear, but yeah I think you have to consider that we were up against a good side today...and we're in the early stages of a work in progress.

I think all things considered we showed overall improvement today.

Been surprised that nobody has commented yet on us not conceding today - ok we might have had some luck in that - but generally our defence was pretty good today. So most unSpursy, we had a pretty solid platform to build on with a decent CM unit in front of it allowing our attacking players to get going.

If we can maintain that defensive solidity and CM's playing well for a few games, I think our attacking can improve - we need to be creating more oportunities and scoring more goals but today wth the defencive solidity, one goal was enough.

not getting the Mason love. I thought he struggled. Had it been Paulinho he would've been "dire" and "shit". Of course he wasnt dire or shit, but its funny how ratings go.

Wanker of the week goes to Tony (I fcuking hate spurs) Gale.
How he gets air time is beyond me, even the Southampton fans hated him.

that guy is just awful to listen to. 95% of his commentary is negative - this guy should've done better, that guy has poor technique, blah blah blah.

Noticed something really pleasing: remember the cross from rose that Forster fumbled to a corner? Verts was in that attack, and When he saw the poor cross he ran as fast as he Could back... That is the spirit I've been missing from him!! Very good game...

I agree about the defence, but there is one thing that remains the same. My dad pointed out to me that the Spurs defence is good, but there is always small episodes where the concentration slips... I agree with him.
