Not aimed at you pal, just a surprise really. Was my first visit of the season and just generally reading the crowd reaction etc and the general vibe on the way home I wasn't expecting such a positive response on here.

We weren't poor 'West Brom' style, thought we were incredibly sloppy in the final third though and that one or two took a while to even get into the game. Southampton are a pretty hard working side but certainly don't see them keeping up the form they've showed so far.

Guess I was just hoping to be more entertained by the experience.

Fair enough mate. From having re-watched it sober I see where you're coming from.

I think we shaded the game though and just about deserved the three points.

Still long way to go, obviously. But a step on the right direction.

As someone who's not a big fan of Lamela (half of my neg ratings is probably from the Lamela thread alone haha), I thought he played really well yesterday and definitely one of our better players.

A few observations:

Capoue dominated the middle, with Mason offering an excellent outlet at times with quick thinking forward passes.
Rose was strong with little protection.
Kaboul had a couple of wobbles.
Eriksen I thought had good spells but annonymous for long periods. His corners are woeful and cause us problems.
Lamela is still trying to for e the issue. Dribbles, but takes it a step too far. It will start to come off, but I think his teammates could do with being firmer with him.

One thing I find particularly frustrating is our throw-ins. I imagine we spend a lot of time training on pressing, but it's annoying how unprepared we are with set plays.

Thought Rose was fantastic yesterday, tenacious and very good both offensively and defensively. My MOM.

Some good solid performances with us beginning to look like a team. My biggest criticism has been around the slow tempo we have got in the habit of starting games with which, against the big teams, usually leave us out of the game before we wake up. But good to see energy from the start after a promising North London derby display.

Let's hope we build on this. Mistakes happen, the odd bad game is inevitable but if we see improvements then this could be a good season

The funny thing with Lamela is, the enthusiasm you lot have here for him is not matched in the stadium in my opinion.

You can hear the growing frustration from the crowd each time he loses the ball.

I`ve been critical of Lamela in the past too, but the kid definitely has something special, particularly the ability to play a key pass, I especially loved his pass to Chadli at the start of the move that led to Chadli hitting the post. It`s also apparent that if we had a more controlled striker than Ade then this kid is going to be an assist machine which is why I`m eager to see him linking up with Soldado for a run of games. It`s also easy to forget that Lamela has really only played a handful of games in our league. In short, he`s winning me over.

That's a shame. Maybe we have become too used to playing 'safe' percentage football. I criticise the two holding midfielders but maybe they are there to allow the likes of Lamela to try something different, to make the odd mistake as he tries to unlock defences. Guess he could just pass two yards sideways every time he gets the ball and so get a 100% pass completion rate. Or never dribble so he does not drop below 100% there either. But I think we have a shed load of players like that already

Try watching last weeks game again and see if it enhances this weeks experience retrospectively:

Capoue was my MOM as he basically run things One or two wayward passes but otherwise a good shift (Thought Schneiderlin was quite for them really)
Rose played well but does still dive in a little too often
Lamela is an inch away from being excellent. I feel he is still not strong enough There were several times when it was nudge that dispossed him rather than good tackling or marking If he can hold off the physical pressure he will be fantastic ( much in the same way Bale developed )
Kaboul is playing well but again a couple of poor clearances could have been costly. Conversely though Jan was quite until they brought on Long. Does the system restrict Vertonghen's upfield adventures?
Another In Out display from Eriksen. At times the focal point of what was happening but times when he was anonymous.
Ad seems to playing the system rather than his natural game as well

Thought there was an improvement today and the prime objective is to win. On yesterdays evidence I think ultimately we will see a more stylish team based on a strong discipline and work ethic ( something we have not had for a very long time)

One other thing, our corners and free kicks are worse than they have ever been at the moment. Truly disgraceful the amount of times we couldn't even beat the first man.

I think that everybody in the stadium wants him to succeed and are just disappointed when things dont come off for him or the team I have not heard negativity per se

Must be the company you keep

I thought the crowd were more pleased with the result; that some were things were better but still away to go
Winning is No1 getting it right and working hard at that will bring the right to play more adventurous football
I know there are lots of threads about the atmosphere at the lane and I do accept it is happening everywhere but the support is really half hearted. ( I have slightly changed my position on this topic)

Pleased with the result no doubt, and I agree the atmosphere was very flat again yesterday. Saints fans weren't even overly noisy but still drowned us out.

Was at the game and kept wanting Rose to cross more. Whilst he was great today there were a couple of times when he'd get near the box and pass back to someone near him than put the ball in though a lot of that could be due to Ade. As a striker I think he was poor yesterday but as a target man/number 10 he was great. He had better hold up pay and worked more but he has developed an annoying habit of not being in the box much or going near it. Felt like there were a few times when Lamela, Chadli and Eriksen wanted to make a pass forward but had no Ade to aim it to.

This seems like how we ask our loan striker to play nowadays though, Soldado didn't get in the box against Besiktas either.
