Danny Rose was everywhere tonight, attacking, defending. supporting backing up other players and sweeping up after just about everybody, absolutely immense.

Was one of his best performances for us. His progression this season has been remarkable. I'm struggling to think of any of our players who have not improved under Poch

I thought Rose was MOTM by some distance, very surprised at the poll results.

I agree with the first bit, I'm not surprised though. People don't like him. How anyone could have watched that game and thought Eriksen out-performed Rose is beyond belief. The cross for the first goal was a thing of beauty, especially.

I haven't time for a full set of ratings, as I have an early start tomorrow, but I just want to mention Bentaleb. He has developed the same uncanny knack that Modric had of reliably finding a little lake of space in the middle of the pitch to receive the ball and distribute it. He did it at least 15 or 20 times this evening, just seeing the gap and drifting into it. From there, he was able to control the tempo of the game in a quiet, no-nonsense, subtle way, always on the ball, just circulating it around. He also contributed to the attack more prolifically than usual, but he was our key player in central midfield, without doing very much that was flashy. I am starting to see the makings of a really top-class midfielder there. There are echoes of Michael Carrick.

Rose was also excellent tonight and Mason scored his first league goal, but Bentaleb was my MotM.

I just don't get it

I was baffled by the selections of Chadli and particularly Townsend on Sunday, and after their abject displays and the fact that they played Sunday am even more perplexed at the logic that saw them picked again tonight.

Hindsight's great and makes Pochettino's selections seem vindicated, but the logic that made them still seems as flawed to me, especially where Townsend is concerned and his goal aside I still think he was poor with the ball and created nothing again, in a game where we had 60% of the ball against a pretty lethargic Swansea team. And without the ball he just isn't conducive to that high press game we want to play. Dembele saw the ball as much in his 27 minutes than Townsend had in his 63.

I said on sunday that you can make a case for Chadli as he does produce and does get more involved in games, and tonight that was the case, he saw plenty of ball, scored a very well taken goal and did have a half decent game.

But I still don't understand why Pochettino is picking players that aren't entirely compatible with the type of football he wants to play. We've seen what we are capable of against Arsenal and Liverpool so why we are not reproducing that is now puzzling. It's similar to the counter intuitive selection mistakes AVB continually made.

This wasn't a bad performance at all, especially considering how much football we've played lately (more puzzling why Dembele and Lamela weren't used) but there was too much head downness. Kane continually refused to get his head up and pass the ball, and others were also guilty of trying shots from stupid positions, often whilst crowded out and sometimes where better options had made runs to offer better choices.

Rose had a pretty decent game and put in a great ball for Chadli's goal. Eriksen was better second half. But MOTM for me was Mason. He played well, saw more ball than any of our other midfielders, gave it away less than he sometimes does and bagged a cool finish.

Individual stuff

Lloris - fantastic save to preserve the points.

Arbi - Pretty typical performance. Lots of involvement, nothing productive going forward, stood off the guy for the cross for the second goal.

Dier - Pretty decent

Vertonghen - Pretty decent apart from the one that bounced over his leg for the goal. Not sure if it was a blunder or just shit luck.

Rose - Pretty good game, great ball for the goal.

Mason - Very good game. kept the ball rotating, was positionally disciplined, tried to get forward to support attacks, saw the most ball of our front 5 and took his goal really well.

Bentaleb - Couple of careless passes but decent enough overall.

Townsend - Goal aside I thought he was typically poor. Created nothing of substance, defends weakly, gives the ball away stupidly at times and then makes half arsed efforts to get it back.

Eriksen - Was pretty poor first half, got better second.

Chadli - Was quite involved in the game, took his goal well, decent game.

Kane - Another very poor game. Must get his head up sometimes and play the pass instead turning into the crowd and trying to plough through or shooting from unlikely positions. Didn't see enough ball and didn't make good decisions when he did.

Think Rose had one of his best ever games for Spurs, fantastic news for us if he can keep it up.

Think the reason why Mason is MOTM is that his goal was a game changer, and his performance for the rest of the match (up until Swansea scored) was fantastic.

So I'd put Rose and Bentaleb as runners up for MOTM this time

I don't have any issue with Mason leading the way, very happy for him to get his first goal. Mason and Rose should be the front runners imo.

I thought Rose was MOTM by some distance, very surprised at the poll results.

Some folk decided immediately that Danny Rose was shite. Consequently, when they watch him, they ignore any good play from him as an unconnected verbiage of individual okays - they don;t actually see a good game in among all of this. But they watch with eagle eyes for any error, and then jump up and down wildly, pulling out their hair wailing and gnashing their teeth (at the same time...WOW!) and declaring to anyone and everyone in ear-shot, no matter how they try to cringe away from them, that they said he was shite the first time they saw him, and why the fahook does Pochetino still insist on playing him! :)

But it's alright. There is a counter-weight. All those who remember his debut goal against the Goons and refuse to believe he can do anything wrong, sticking their fingers in their ears and their heads in the ground (wouldn't one suffice?) and chanting nah nah nah nah when anyone preaches the heresy that he has made an error :)

MOM: Rose, was a beast today

+++ Rose Bentaleb Chadli
++ Walker Mason Lloris
+ Dier

- Vertonghen. First bad game this year.

--- Townsend. Loses the ball ever other second, Crosses have been bad since 1843 And still really selfish. Soldado dont score, but he try to make the team better.

Mason 9
- Is Co-MOTM possible? I can't really be bothered as to which one gets it between Nabil and him. They absolutely bossed the midfield and dictated tempo all match. Everyone knows, even the opposition, how busy of a player he is...so good. How can people only see that he is "average" or only decent??!! He is getting better every game and the partnership with Nabil is blossoming right before our eyes. He smashed his goal in very very well. I'd actually like to see him played in the #10 spot when he, Bentaleb, and Dembele are on the pitch because I think he offers better shooting and better passing.

Mason is an awful shooter. I missed the game, but one goal does not change the fact that out of our entire team, every time the ball lands at his feet in a shooting position, I sigh and predictably it skies to Row Z. Not just once, every single damn time. He really needs to improve that because 100% of the time he doesn't get it on target.

Walker is also not great at going forward really. He runs, suddenly decides to think and passes the ball back. Happens loads of times every game. Can't cross for shite when he does get into the position as well unlike Chiriches.

I'm confused.

If Mason puts it in row Z every time and 100% of the time he's off target...

How did he manage to get on the score sheet?

i think tonight people were being very very unfair on andros...he and walker were putting some really good crosses into the box and because we didnt really have men in the box attacking the crosses. andros has been really shite lately but tonight im willing to say he played well.

His record at youth level and on loan disagrees.

As do Nottingham Forrest fans.

Still a matter of finding his confidence in the PL but he actually strikes the ball incredibly well and in general possesses excellent technique.

After this confidence booster the goals should start to flow (hopefully).

About Mason; one of those finally went in. He was worthy of MOTM today goal aside, but think back to the chances he's had against Man U, City, and a few others - I remember Kane set him up really well against United and he seemed to be aiming ten yards to the left.

Still, I knew that this would happen eventually, he'd strike one cleanly and get a goal. I really believe Mason can be a goalscoring threat from midfield because he does something we haven't seen for a long time - he makes driving runs off the ball from midfield. Mason's off ball ability and forward running is something we've severely lacked and something I thought Paulinho would have brought. With our inability to play extremely quickly, the defense usually is able to adjust to our attacking players before we can exploit the gaps. Mason runs through the middle channels and gives defenders one more thing to think about, and that buys us the extra amount of space Eriksen or Kane needs sometimes. Mason's runs are not perfect yet, and I think they could sometimes be a little more intelligent, but they can be very helpful when breaking down a defense. The aggression and drive he brings is something to be admired, and it makes me think that he can start chipping in with goals.

Poch picking the same team that lost the final was a materstroke in man-management imo....the message i think he was sending was he was proud of the team that lost and didn't want to single out any player who he would have dropped, he also hoped the same 11 would want to get that defeat out of their system.....and it worked as i thought for large parts of the game lastnite, it was the best we have played, i thought we zipped it about the way we should and made plenty of decent chances.
The game was seemingly won when Dembele came on, but for me we looked so slick when he came on .and he just gelled it all together and Swansea could't get near us....but i get why he didn't start for the reasons above.
Soldado has not been a success, we all know, but he really has no luck, he could have got a couple lastnite and i thought done ok when he came on.

The scoreline didn't do our performance justice...4-1 would have been about right, and but for Hugo they nearly somehow nicked a point.

Ratings...

Mom...Between Rose & Mason....went for Rose, he has improved so much and gave us everything down the left.
Very good....Rose,Mason,Bentaleb
Good..Eriksen,Chadli,Dier,Hugo
Ok ....Walker,Verts,Townsend,Kane

Poch ....10/10 for sticking with the same team, and his subs were spot on at the right times

Excellent post, and agreed about awarding him the MotM for his performance.

He did nothing particularly spectacular, but aside from a couple mistakes was utterly sublime to my eyes. His ability to retain possession, even in shitty situations, is rapidly accelerating the level of any of the league's best. Furthermore, that he not only keeps the ball at our feet, but finds the right pass into space which can be exploited is just absolutely top shelf, and critical to our team atm.

He was so good today despite Swansea quickly trying to close down and harass our midfielders. He calmly relieved that pressure and kept us moving forward and got us in behind their rapid wingers, and as a result was pivotal in us winning that match. Erego, he is also my man of the match for what was IMO an outstanding performance from him.

Both of our central midfielders really could do with a bit better shooting. Any time either of them crank up from deep I feel the frustration flowing in because it's entirely too often with a good amount of space ahead of them. I actually find Bentaleb the more frustrating between them, simply because he tries it more often and in better situations, he just keeps them on target and so you aren't subject to the disproportionate frustration of a blasted shot horrendously off target.

Coincidentally, I don't recall Mason actually doing it at all in this match. Granted I missed maybe ten minutes or so between getting food/drink/piss whatever, but from what I did see I don't recall any Masonaut shots.

Its because some people make it an agenda to dislike him for no apparent reason, just for the sake of it i guess.

He has been our most consistent performer but one bad game and people are already calling him a poor footballer and says davies is miles better. Thats absurd and very unfair to danny boy.

No way would i put davies ahead of him and he would be the first name on my team sheet bar lloris. Hes the most underrated player in our team and deserves to play for england

well done danny boy. Youre a star.

He wasnt my MOM as i thought danny and hugo were outstanding. But yeah i totally agree with your assessment of nabil. Hes a superb footballer and given time can develop into a world class midfielder. Thats how high i rate him. Pure class and calmness on the ball and can make ball retention and distribution look so easy. Look at the way he passes to teammates even in tight angles.

Hes gonna be a star and i hope he stays on and becomes a world class player at spurs.

Yep. I put in the match day thread that I thought picking the same team was a man-management choice. Poch was a player, he'd have known that most of that XI would have wanted to get the cup final out of their system. Still think Townsend will be phased out over the coming weeks.
