He got sent off in a World Cup match against Morocco at the 1986 finals for throwing the ball at the referee, the first England player to ever be sent off in a World Cup match.

If that had happened these days there would have been ructions.

IIRC he was nicknamed 'the crab' because of his sideways passing but again, today he'd be ranked alongside Pirlo or something. He was a very very good player. I particularly enjoyed watching him play for QPR where his quality really stood out. RIP Ray :(

I remember watching that with my dad, I was 8 lol

Such a shame, I always thought he spoke sense about how the game should be played and the basics. I thought him and Hoddle may have made a good coaching partnership given the right club.

My brother met him years ago when he was looking for a flat for his brother Chris who was a youth player at Chelsea and just breaking into the first team. they came to look at the one my brother shared with a mate in Hayes said he was really nice. Didn't take the flat though.

He will be missed by those who knew him and those who grew up watching him whoever he played for.

A legend RIP Ray Wilkins

RIP Ray Wilkins

his very 1st season was the year we beat Chelsea 2-0 that sent Chelsea down. he went on to have a successful career in playing for some top teams and later became a pundit that spoke his mind.

too young to die

What sad news, seemed a really good hearted guy :(

It is usually me with the faux pas.

He was a year younger than I am.

I've had ticker trouble but hopefully mine was sorted.

R.I.P. Butch Wilkins. One of the game's great ambassadors.

I thought his punditry was a little 'know it all' and came across very condescending.

RIP though, you were a great footballer.

I remember when he started playing. He could actually play on the Stamford Bridge pitch which was a cross between a cabbage patch and a peat bog which was quite an achievement. Sad news.

Yeah he had a bit of a renaissance at QPR after a spell at Glasgow Rangers I think, he was a class footballer and a real class act as a person, very sad news, thoughts with him and his family :-(

And those Blue handicapped cars hat were parked on the pitch. He was at Chelsea when they were shit (the first time).
