John Bostock became the club's youngest-ever player in a competitive first-team match when he came off the bench for his debut against Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday night.

The midfielder came on with 79 minutes on the clock and almost made it a night to remember when he drilled a shot just wide from the edge of the box.

John made his first appearance aged 16 years, 295 days and was therefore six days younger than the previous record holder, Ally Dick.

Ally faced Manchester City in a First Division fixture at White Hart Lane on February 20, 1982 aged 16 years 301 days.

He beat the previous record of 16 years 303 days, set by Neil McNab against Chelsea on April 3, 1974.

John has made six appearances for our Academy U18 team this season and featured in friendly matches for both the first and reserve teams.

He now has 17 caps for the England U17 team, having captained them in four of his five appearances this season. He also has six caps for England U16's.

John already holds the record as Crystal Palace's youngest ever League player, having made his Championship debut against Watford on October 29, 2007, aged 15 years 287 days.

This is another reason I am gutted the game wasn't on the box last night. Fans never got to see how Bostock played on his deput.

I did, the first thing he does is thread a pass in between two dinamo players with his left foot... he basically controlled the ball, looked up and passed, but all, very very quickly.

He was very anxious, moving around and wanted to get on the ball, nearly had a chance when he shot from the top of the box, just missing the target. (As the article mentions!)

I thought he looked very good. Got a kind of arrogant swagger about him, which is awesome.

Looks like we could have a real winner here.
3. spurdownunder
Awesome, I'm chuffed he got his debut and by all accounts from you lads that were there, he looks like the business.

Hopefully he's nurtured through, given minutes here and there to build his confidence and can become a prodigy.

At this stage though, no pressure on the lad, just good to see that he's heading in the right direction.

bostok does look the business, was confident and wanted the ball, a good sign.

on another note, i think its time everyone gives darrent bent the credit he deserves. the guy has been absolutely villanised on this site for ages, sometimes rightly so, but he has gone about his job very professionally and is doing exactly what we bought him to do. score goals. in fact, he has scored more goals than berbs and keane have ever scored at this stage of the season for us. Add that to the fact that he doesnt complain when not starting or subbed, appears to be a genuine nice bloke and always celebrates his goals with a smile.

i will admit it, i am a darren bent fan and its time we sing his name from the stands.

how about an i love darren bent, darrent bent loves me!!

Agree about Bent. He doesn't have the flair of Keane Berbatov, but we didn't buy him for that. We bought him to score goals and that's exactly what he is doing.

He must have 15-20 so far this season (including pre-season) and that is playing for a club that is bottom of the Premiership and who do not play him every game.

littlemandefoe! Not seen you since the old chat box on the main SC page days! ha!

Anyways, I was at the game and can say I liked what I saw. Agree he looked very anxious but looked comfotable on the ball and the main thing he was always wanting. Drifted in a few times just for a chance to get another touch. He pulled on the shot a bit that made it drift wide at the end but he did well.

Interesting where he will play. Especially after Redknapps comments about him finding his position. Went onto the left wing though drifted in a few times. Just wonder if Redknapp feels he may end up as a left winger or in a more central position! For me he looked more comfortable when he drifed inside.

look forward to the youngsters breaking through..
8. tcyrus

His name will never be sung or the credit given to him, because he's in the same catagory as (Chimbonda, jenas, zokora, ghaly, gardner, atouba)who are or were hated by most of the people on this site !

:hump:

think Bostock did well in the fleeting glimpses we saw last night has a definite talent........think he will need to watch his weight he is a big lad for 16......has a lot junk in the trunk if you catch my drift!
10. SpurSince57
As opposed to the ludicrously overrated Defoe, who was being sung about by a bunch of knobheads last night.
11. tcyrus

Yeah mate !

their the ones i'm talking about:bang:
12. WhiteStripe
Hactually...towards the end of the game, Defoes' song was stolen and adapted for a certain Mr Bent...

Darren Bent....he's a Yid
Darren Bent....he's a Yid....etc.
13. Boaman
Every game since Harry took over, 3 or 4 times.

Although I would love to see him back, his strike rate suggests he isn't overrated but I guess you don't have rate. Harry obviously rates him which is good enough for me

Let's hope young Bostock enjoys a few more appearances than Ally Dick managed, but similar success in the UEFA Cup.

Apparently Dick was brought on as a sub for Gary Mabbutt in the '84 final - can't recall it at all myself - must have been all the home-brew I drank afterwards.

Dear Harry!! Don't forget PEKHART!!!! .... GET HIIM BACK!!! WE SHOULD USE HIM instead of Campbell!!!
16. pheg25
I couldnt get the game - was working late but watched it online!! we were brilliant in patches - but just a few signs at the back that long way to go!! but its a start!

what i loved about Bostock was his eagerness to get the ball - hand in the air, moving across the pitch - future CM for definate!

also need to mention Fraizer Campbell - he worked his socks off when he came on and is worth a start in a 442 when its time to rest Modric.

Sorry Gents but i have always maintained Bent is a goal scorer - no more he works hard and he closes down but ultimatly its goals! I have never slagged him off and will never- we need a tune for him and rehashing the Defoe one is a little lame - heads together time!!!!

I always liked defoe and unfortunate that Keane and Berba were so prolific together! would welcome him back but would prefer a fresh face at the club if honest!!

Got my Citeh ticket and cant wait - tommy hudd reliving two yrs ago with another stormer! well i can dream!
17. pheg25
has Pekahrt done much at southampton? i heard he was lookin average?

This was the Tom Huddlestone I have been hoping for over the last three years – he was immense, and the passes he threaded through for Bent were every bit as impressive as his goal.
I’m aware that this was a poor-performing Zagreb side and that there is more space in midfield in a European match where players are not closed down so quickly as in the Premiership. But two other factors may have contributed.
First, he has been at the heart of the midfield for every game since Harry arrived rather than being in-out, in-out as he was under both Jol and Ramos. This must be a huge boost to his own confidence as well as allowing him to build up some momentum in his displays.
Second, Jenas’s injury meant that Zokora had the holding role and Tom could advance further forward, picking his passes in the areas that matter rather than having to find people from deep.
Certainly the best chance of making the most of Darren Bent’s abilities is to play The Hudd in behind him, as he is more likely then to be played through for a one-on-one with the keeper – and in that particular situation Bent is more consistently deadly than Defoe and Keane ever were.

Watched the game here in Toronto as a delayed feed on Fox Sports World. I didn't know it was on but was flipping channels just to see what's on and there was Spurs playing. It was slightly past 5 pm, so must have been a 3 hour delay.

It was a remarkable performance, and only Hutton was a bit wanting. Needless to say, Hudds and Modric were magic. Both would score 10 out of 10; with most of the others on 8 or 9. Hutton I'd give a 7.

Bostock looked good and so did Campbell. Hope the latter will have a change of heart and join us on a permanent basis.
