Harry Redknapp had admitted he is not concentrating on planning long-term for Tottenham Hotspur because he is unlikely to be at White Hart Lane for too many years.

Redknapp has generally gone for experienced players such as Peter Crouch, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.

Though he recently signed Sheffield United's promising duo Kyle Naighton and Kyle Walker, Redknapp is more concerned about the present than the future.

He said: 'We just took two kids from Sheffield United and we want young players but really, it's all about your first team. You need experience and people who are going to win football matches.

'It's no good saying 'we're going to be a good team in four years', because I probably won't be here. That's not how the game works, you need a team.

'We're looking for young talent and young players who will play here for years to come. But that can mean bringing in an experienced player to pull all of them together.

'There's no problem with the chairman [Daniel Levy] on that front. He brought me here as the manager and he knows I've got a bit of an idea what I'm doing so he backs me.'

Cheers Harry, glad you're not just thinking about yourself then! :)

Actually, since he will be nearing 70 by then its not unrealistic that he would be looking to retire. Also, he's just being honest about the footballing world and knows that if he doesn't bring short terms success he's not likely to get the chance to develop the team over many years with Levy's reputation of sakcing within 2 to 3 years.

But shouldn't a managers job be to try and get results and develop the team/club? And even more so when in charge of the signings

It certainly would best for the club anyway

He's probably saying it tongue in cheek, as in "Knowing my luck, I probably wont be here...." etc.

    Who knows?
    Who cares?

    It's the Daily Fail FFS

I would think this comment was in reference to the fact that managers tend to get turned over pretty quickly in the modern game. I would not worry about it at all!

My comment was tongue in cheek as much as Harry's.

Thats why he has signed 2 young players from Sheffield. But primarily, he will be concerned about here and now.

    RIP Bobby Robson!!

I'd rather win the league (or anything actually) rather say 'oh we might win it in 4 years'.

I might not be here in 4 years - get players to win now!

The fact he's changed our youth set-up, ended our particpation in the reserve league and started loaning out our younger players shows he is helping our long-term future.

But first team success is most important as we're getting tired of veing told we have a talented young team.

Spurs change their managers on average every 19mths and I'm sure Harry knows that. Even two fourth place finishes and some decent football didn't save Martin Jol.

Nice to see some quotes on here about Sir Bobby Robson. He was a gentleman and a throw back to a different era of football. I got the chance to work with him a few years back and to hear him talk about Spurs of the 50s and 60s was impressive. He loved all we stood for and I could tell he would have enjoyed managing us as a club and all we stood for in the game. Too bad he never had the chance. RIP SBR.

Safe to say if he had had two FOURTH place finishes, he'd still be with us.

 Yes, of course it was.

Actually if you take it from the start of Peter Shreeves's tenure, it's barely over one year for each manager.

Which is pretty pathetic really, and one of the major reasons for our lack of success in the last couple of decades.

Safe to say if he had had an eight and a fifth he would still be with us too .

I hope the board have learned their lesson and get the impression they have but wouldn't be all that surprised if they bailed out early on Harry as well .

That is a quite shocking statistic. I agree it is a main reason for our poor success rate. We really do need to start changing that stat by standing by our managers more.
