Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp launched a stinging attack on referee Steve Tanner after his 10-man side lost 2-0 at West Brom.

Roman Bednar, in the 83rd minute, and substitute Craig Beattie, in injury time, secured the victory West Brom deserved on the balance of play alone.

Tottenham had Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent off in the 35th minute for an over-the-top tackle on Gianni Zuiverloon, although television replays suggested the tackle was not as dangerous as it first appeared.

But Redknapp was more concerned with the performance of the official, who he claimed missed Bednar's push on Michael Dawson for the opening goal.

"I couldn't even put into words what I thought of his performance," said the Spurs boss.

"When I walked into the referees' room before the game and saw who was reffing the game I knew what was coming.

"I expected that and it didn't surprise me at all. I've had him many times before and I know what he is like - he really isn't good enough.

"He is just a poor referee unfortunately and I've seen him make a mess of so many games before.

"I saw him when I was in the Championship and I thought to myself then 'Where has he come from?'.

"I never walk in after game and complain about a referee but this guy today is scary.

"What can you do? Someone thinks he is good enough but he is definitely not."

Perversely, Redknapp thought the referee was right to send off Assou-Ekotto.

"I thought it was a sending-off. I thought he turned his back, he put his foot in and I could see why he sent him off," he added.

stop whingeing and sort the team out!! It was a sending off i agree and it was def a foul for t he first goal but our performance was shocking! take some responsabilitity Redknapp!

He;s only doing what he can with what he;s got. That's Ramos's legacy for 2008. Thanks for the memories Juande.

Now let's see what Harry can conjur up with an element of his own blend.

The referee was atrocious. The Brom fans were booing his every decision for about 80 minutes straight. But unfortunately for us, the two main decisions went their way.

I am torn on how happy I am with these comments. The passionate, heart on sleeve element of me loves to hear something like this and is glad that our manager is at least allowing his emotions to get the better of him so that we know we are not alone in having our emotions toyed with.

However, my head says "what if the FA hit him with a ban?". In our current situation we can't afford any more knocks, physical or psychological.

Redknapp is doing what he has always done: talked openly about his feelings on a game. In the same way, after the Liverpool game, he talked about how poorly we had played and how we had rode our luck; after this game, he has come out and said how poor the ref was....and he was; extremely poor.

watch and see if redknapp gets penalised for these remarks, even though im pretty sure SAF and Rafa have to no real problems...

It was not a sending off, maybe a booking.

This is another bullshit wasted league season under Levy. More transition, more junk. I've been getting tired of it and tuning out. We're a joke again and as badly mismanaged as Newcastle and West Ham - the three ring circus act of the Prem.

Unfortunately, you may be right there...After doing so much to support the managers prior to this summer, Levy has almost undone all his good work by either relying too much on Comolli or by not being decisive enough in bringing vital (high quality) replacements for Keane and Berbatov earlier in pre-season.

By haggling the 30 mil out of Man U till the last minutes of transfer window and refusing to pay most of the Arshavin fee upfront AFTER he knew Berbatov was definitely going for MORE money than Arshavin would cost, Levy and Comolli left Ramos in deep, deep trouble. The board also did not go for someone like Diego Milito (one of Ramos' choices) seriously enough.
This was compounded by spending 15 mil on a player like Bentley, low on fitness and work ethics, but high on misplaced arrogance and self-importance.
So instead of Arshavin and Milito for a combined fee of around 28 million, we got Bentley and Pavlyuchenko for around 30 million. Ramos was undermined already big time there.

Then, as Bentley and several other underperforming players led the campaign to undermine Ramos & Poyet by more or less sabotaging their plans and effort, instead of making it perfectly clear to the players that either they support the coaches and try their hardest, or they will be demoted to reserves, Levy decided to follow the easier route of pandering to the players and replace Ramos with "no nonsense", "one of the lads" Harry. This was always likely to bring short-term results due to the same players now trying much harder to justify their previous poor performances by making it look like it was the previous coaches' fault and now they will show what they can actually do, blah blah.

But the truth is that the damage inflicted by the board in the vital period before the season and by the saboteur players at the beginning of the season was always going to come back to haunt us.

Its pathetic blaming the ref, ok maybe he fkd up but it was west brom and i'd be asking myself why wernt we 2 or 3 up and in control of the game instead of looking for scapegoats.

We were not good enough to beat west brom, the rest is imaterial. I am praying that Redknapp buys Upson ahead of any other player this jan, its no coincedense that we rarely win with Dawson in the side. We also need a left winger and a striker in too asap.
West brom roughed us up and out fought us, today showed me that we are too weak for a relegation battle, we wouldnt stand a chance. Blaming ref's isnt the answer.

its all well and good people sayin we werent good enough but the plain fact is that the ref has cost us the chance of getting anything from the game? Therefore Harry is not just making things worse; the fact is that we were cheated. we were extremely poor fact, however we still would have got something from the game, and if we had 11 menwould have won judging the way the game was unravelling.

I wish this season was a proper transition, but it's just been shite, followed by shite, with a little less shite and then shite again. It actually saddens me how far backwards we have gone as a club since the 'glory' days when we were in the top 6 and then even winning a few cup games and playing in true Spurs scoring style. Given the Meltdown of International Capitalism it's hard to even see that we can spend our way out of this shite.

    Happy New Year!!!!

Hmmmm shite sandwhich comes to mind. The more bread you use, the less shite you eat.

Lets hope for more bread in 2009, so this christmas filling shite can be forgotten.

My sentiments exactly. Absolutely spot on

How about a nice big slice of humiliation Christmas cake please, washed down with a flute of incessant ridicule champagne. Thanks Spurs.

I have no doubt that Levy blew it in the summer. He blamed 'collective responsibility' but the buck stops with him then and now. He's done well to make us financially secure but the team he's helped create is now toothless. They are not as bad as some people make out on here but they do lack striking prowess. Refereeing decisions definitely cost us yesterday and the luck was not with us again. However, we are still above the zone with 18 games to go, and its now up to Harry to show his worth. The players are good enough to be mid-table but they have to start scoring again. I live in hope of better days and its up to Levy and Harry to find the players needed or inspire the ones we have.

I agree, the days of MJ and his top five finishes are a distant dream....

It will take years for us to get back to that kind of standard and the is only one man to blame
