    Spurs boss admits mistake.

Harry Redknapp admits he was wrong to publicly criticise Darren Bent following a glaring miss by the striker during a game against Portsmouth in January.

The Tottenham boss, understandably disappointed after seeing his side held 1-1 at White Hart Lane, famously said 'my missus could have scored it' in regards to the spurned opportunity.

Redknapp now accepts that lambasting Bent did more harm than good and insists he will refrain from making such comments again in the future.

"I must admit myself I think I made a mistake after one game, I did cane them a bit," he said.

"I didn't get a response from that, and someone I respect told me that wasn't my style.

"I criticised a few of the players and it really doesn't work for me, it's not really the way I manage.

"I get more out of the players by telling them what they can do rather than what they can't do. That has always been my way. They responded (but) I felt that was a mistake on my part. I felt I rectified that and lifted them and we've gone on from there."
    Additions

Redknapp has helped to usher in an exciting new era at Tottenham, quickly papering over the cracks left over from Juande Ramos' ill-fated spell at the club.

He now believes that Spurs will be realistic top-four contenders next season, with a few minor tweaks to his squad all that is required to have the club challenging at the top of the table.

"I think this is the club to play at, there are only the top four, other than that they couldn't do any better than Tottenham," said Redknapp on possible new recruits.

"It's a club going places and we could have a great season next year. It's a squad capable of pushing the top four.

"We need a few new additions in a couple of areas. They are the areas I want to improve."

Unlike some of the cynics above, I hope that Harry's apology is genuine and is not a ploy to increase Darren Bent's value (though I can't really see the connection between HR's comments and Bent's value).

I think that the top scorer at any football club should be treated with respect by manager and fans alike.

Spot on, think they guy has been given a bit of a rough ride just because of the amount we paid for him and the expectation level that has created. Lets be honest about it, we shouldn't have paid over 7m for him!

exactly right and its not Bent's fault we like to splash the cash like its nobody's business

We don't really need to strenghten - maybe up front.

Some people think that a little bit of stick is what some people need. With your mates I say this would be fine. But having worked with young adults this more often than not has the opposite effect, plus it is a professional relationship and not a 'mates' relationship. I'm not saying what he said was outrageous, just unnecessary and unprofessional.

What I like most about this is Harry has been man enough to admit he was wrong. It seems like Bent has won his respect, justifiably, through his goal scoring and commitment.

All's well that ends well. I like this story and good for Harry!

Are you joking ? Of course we need to strenghten otherwise we would be top 4 now.

People are getting short-memories-syndrome about how Darren Bent came to Tottenham. It's not as if Comolli and Levy wandered into the Valley with thirteen million quid hanging out of their pockets and said "hi guys, got any strikers?"

No. Charlton decided to accept an offer from West Ham, who were then in their "we're rich!" Icelandic phase and were slamming wads of cash on any table within range. But Darren Bent refused to sign for West Ham. Point-blank. He wanted to come to us.

The problem was that West Ham's OTT offer had established the market value and, unless we outbid them, it would remain an impasse in which no one would get their way: Charlton, who were being relegated, would not get the money they desperately needed; Bent wouldn't get a move to a Premiership club; West Ham and Tottenham would be left needing another striker.

After a short period of reflection (and a few clandestine visits from Mr Bent to Spurs Lodge, as I understand it), Spurs decided to pony up the extra cash and sign him.

The point is that we never thought Bent was worth £13m plus £3.5m of extras, but West Ham forced us to pay over the odds or lose the player. We decided to pay over the odds.

What would people have said if we had walked away and then Bent had signed for West Ham and scored 20 goals for them, including a winner against us? I can guess: "we never have the guts to do the big deal, Levy is a penny-pinching **** who is content to settle for mediocrity."

It's called being blamed if you do and blamed if you don't. People do that a lot here.

Harry is in the comfort zone now,so he has the luxury to make amends .my feeling about Bent is ambivelent,he scores goals in crucial games, but he is not the prolific striker who Spurs doled Mega pounds to attain.Pav could develop into a target man ,but he is injury prone ,Bent is not a target man ,he runs the channels but defoe is more adept at that.Big question mark with the the seemingly inadequate form of Keane who looks to be a shadow of himself. has the game passed him by,as the pace of the EPL is so frentic and there is no room any more for slow methodical players with good brains.

yeah keano has been pants since hes come back. Bent is actually playing better at the moment ha ha

All i meant is neither Bent or the Pompey game are mentioned in the quotes from Harry. Journo is the only one that mentions he regrets the Bent comments, Harry could have been talking another game/player.

It was more in response to people saying he was talking up Bent's price tag, making an apology etc.

Anyway I had too many beers last night and am really struggling to explain myself so I can gonna shut up, pretty pointless anyway.
