Harry Redknapp has bemoaned the lack of top-class English youngsters in the modern game as he looks to strengthen his Tottenham squad for next season.

During Martin Jol's reign as boss from 2004 until 2007, Spurs became known as a haven for the most promising English footballers of the day, with current Spurs quartet Aaron Lennon, Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas and Michael Dawson all moving to White Hart Lane while the Dutchman was in charge.

That philosophy was abandoned by Jol's ill-fated successor Juande Ramos, who brought in a collection of players from all over the world - to little success.

But although Redknapp is keen to buy English, he believes the cupboard is almost bare.

The Spurs boss said: 'If I could find good, young English players, I would, but it is very, very difficult.

'You can go out and make a point of buying English players, but if they're not good enough, it's a waste of time. I do think there is a dearth of top young English players.

'We're certainly not over-loaded. I think the group of players we have in the national team at the moment are the best we have had for a long time. But I fear that they are also the best we will have for some years to come.'

Despite suffering only one defeat in their last seven matches in the Premier League, Spurs are still just five points above the drop zone, and face a tough run of fixtures, starting with a trip to fourth-placed Aston Villa on Sunday.

Guus Hiddink's rejuvenated Chelsea are at White Hart Lane on March 21, before Spurs travel to Blackburn - another team fighting relegation - two weeks later.

Redknapp's men also travel to Liverpool and Manchester United before the end of the campaign, and have tricky home games against West Ham and Newcastle.

After taking over last October, Redknapp said he would quit as manager if he failed to keep Spurs in the top flight - and the 62-year-old remains convinced he would walk away should the club drop into the Championship.

He added: 'That's how I would feel, but I don't see that happening. I don't see it as an issue.

'When I took over, I was very confident we would stay up, and I still am.'

Wish he would stop saying he would quit if we go down... :(

we need belief that we can stay up and Harry is here til he is 70.

I was just thinking that, it doesn't really show comitment to the club and set an example to our players. Saying that though it can be taken a couple of different ways:
    1. If we go down I'm on my bike and I will probably take a few of the better players with me!
    2. I am so confident we wont go down I can say this without fear.

I would still like to see a bit more commitment from him though!!

You can't blame him for wanting to cover his own arse. If he thought it, but never said it, he'd look a right arsehole if he left when we went down.

I wish Harry would say we aren't cultivating enough English youngsters after giving Thudd a chance to develop.

I think I am one of the few that believe Spurs will go down. If we beat Aston Villa, this weekend I may change my mind ... If we were to go down, I do see Martin Jol coming back and Levy on his way out !

Alfie, we are 5 points clear with 10 games to go. If we are relegated from this position then 'arry would deserve to go. We have some tough games to play but we have much better players than most teams around and below us. When we were in the relegation zone, I said I'd eat my shoe if we went down; now the taste wouldn't be so bad if big MJ was back in the hotseat. But it aint gonna happen. 'arry and the boys will be in the Premier League next season!

You need commitment from your manager. I don't suppose it is very inspiring for the players to hear him say that. Oh well if we go down we can all f**k off, so whats the point in putting in that little bit extra needed to ensure we stay up.

I can appreciate now why Portsmouth hate him so much, the moment it goes wrong he fucks off to something better.

Just when it looked like we could get a bit of stability at the club!!!!!!:evil::evil: :bang::bang::bang:

i read this as him saying if he can't keep us up he feels he has to quit. with our squad we should stay up! but then spurs always have away of raising my hopes and then bring me crashing back down to earth...please not this time!

I'm with you Hugo. I see it as, "If I fail to keep us up then I'm not good enough and will go". These vague statements are exactly how newspapers get to right blatantly false stories, because they can be span many, many different ways.

Agree, and it seems like Harry is just answering the question put to him by a jorno who hopes to create a headline. In fact, id say that Harry comes across as being very confidant by talking about relegation as not being an issue.

we will survive this season, even though we have a tough run in we will get the points required to stay up.

as for the english young talent...i agree with redknapp pickings are slim at the moment.

    Wait a mo

Just wait until we`ve beaten Villa and Chelsea.the press will then have him in the England job.:whistle::whistle::whistle:

What a strange post "alfiespurs'.....not so much the "going down" part, but to think that Jol would come back - under those cicumstances - is, imo pure fantasy.
  15. nferno
english players are overrated and overpriced (how many times has that been said and yet still people say 'BRING IN ENGLISH PLAYERS'), just settle for the more cheaper and often more creative foreign alternatives.. there isnt a regulation in place yet so lets make use of it. By the time the regulation comes into place we will have a brilliant crop of english players if the Bostocks, Roses, Parrets, Masons, etc all prosper.
  16. pistolP
Forget it, Martin Jols coming back and Levy going.
  17. AdelaideSpur
Would have been nice of him to up our youngsters while talking about young talent.
Trouble is how many clubs are looking at youngsters in England? its too hard to compete, your better off just poaching off of smaller clubs like we have done with Dawson, Lennon, Thudd, Bostock etc.

lets assume we dont get relegated. I want us to lose against villa. I really want to see villa take 4th place from arsenal. that would be great (as long as we dont get relegated due to the loss)
  19. deka_spur
I know what you mean, but thats a battle that Villa will have to fight for themselves - I really hope they keep Arse out of 4th, but we have to worry about ourselves and beat Villa. I believe if we beat Villa we will go on and make 7th position, more important than where Villa and Arse finish
