Harry Redknapp fears Bobby Zamora could return to haunt Tottenham in Wednesday night's FA Cup quarter-final replay with Fulham.

Zamora failed to make the grade at Spurs after moving from Brighton, where he had scored 70 goals in 117 games, for £1.5million in 2003.

Just seven months, seven starts and one league cup goal later, Zamora was used as a make-weight in the deal that took Jermain Defoe from West Ham to Tottenham.

Zamora began to fulfil his potential at Upton Park but Redknapp believes he has become "a different class" playing under Roy Hodgson at Fulham this season.

"He is a really good player. West Ham probably regret letting him go. Tottenham probably regret letting him go. He is really looking the part," said Redknapp.

"He shows well, holds the ball well and is full of confidence. He is looking a real top player. His all around game has improved, and everything has been clicking for him."

Hodgson was the first to back Zamora for an England call-up and the momentum has gathered behind the idea in recent weeks following a series of a top-class performances.

Zamora launched Fulham's stunning Europa League comeback against Juventus with the first goal at Craven Cottage last Thursday in front of England manager Fabio Capello.

"I think he has a realistic shout (of playing for England)," said Redknapp.

"Fabio was at the Juventus game and he must have been impressed with his performance. He is in the frame. He is bang in form.

"Anything can happen between now and then. One or two injuries. He is certainly not doing himself any harm."

Tottenham are set to start on Wednesday night with their own England target man in Peter Crouch alongside Eidur Gudjohnsen after Roman Pavlyuchenko suffered a hamstring injury.

At stake is a Wembley semi-final against Portsmouth and Redknapp knows from watching Fulham against Juventus just how tough a task Tottenham face.

"I was fortunate enough to be there. It was one of the great European performances of all time," said Redknapp.

"It was a fantastic night, a great atmosphere and a great performance from Fulham.

"The players watched it at home and the next day they were talking about it. We have so much respect for Fulham. This is one of the toughest games we could pick.

"He has built a very good team there and it will be mighty tough for us."

Im sorry but if Zamora, Heskey or even Carlton Cole get in over Darren Bent (Im already classing Defoe & Crouch in the sqaud), it is a joke. The guy has an amazing record over the past 3/4 seasons, 2 of them scoring a lot of goals for lower level football teams.

The lad can do no more than score goals.

PS - Im still glad WE sold him though.

    I agree 100%, Boony.

Bent is perfect for the England bench - fresh legs with 20 mins to go, and everything to prove...

Im gonna dissagree. Cole has been injured recently so hasnt been hitting the headlines that Bent has (against Birmingham) but for me Cole is better for a team. Cole does as well as Bent when he plays regularly. Ive also been really impressed with Zamora recently and he has troubled our defence when he has played. Lets see if Bent does when we play them in a weeks time.

For me, there are a lot of defences (particularly at international level) that can nullify a Bent/Defoe type that cant totally do so against the Cole/Zamora that holds up play and brings in other people.

I wish we bought this guy in his maturity. He should be considered. But I am scared he will turn in a performance against us tonight.

He hasnt turned in a performance against us yet this season? Same team same players we spanked at home a few weeks back. I feel very confident. The crowd will be well up for this tonight as well as the team any trip to wembley is a good day out. COYS!

Zamora is similar to Crouch for England. Zamora's more mobile but has less aerial dominance.

Bent is similar to Defoe - the former makes more runs the later a sharper finisher.

I think in a cup competition it's better to choose 'extreme' players than those who are more balanced. I think therefore Defoe/Crouch will be picked ahead of their competition.

    Rather defoe then zamora anytime.

Altho have been impressed with zamora this season!

    i'm feeling a 2-0 or 2-1 2 the yids coys ttid
  9. UbeAstard
Yes he has and if I remember correctly he was voted MOTM in the FA cup at Craven though he hasnt scored.

I would not tempt fate, as certain players do really up their game. Zamora is better the Crouch, this is the type of player we really need to hold up play and also ruffel a few defenders. Crouch ( lovely guy), but a WIMP in terms of aggression. So I would hold off comments like that until after the game. Remember Fulham also have DEMPSEY...

I'm not 'tempting fate' as I don't believe in it. I just think we will be too strong for them tonight. Fulham beat Juve a Juve team with ten men at home 4-1 and suddenly they are amazing. They have won f*ck all away from home this year, so why should I be worried?

    Fulham

    Away

    W= 1 D=6 L=8

    Tottenham

    Home

    W= 10 D= 2 L= 3
  12. alfiespurs
This is a FA Cup, so league form does not really count. Oh should I add Leeds beating Man USA or Fulham beating the russians away and overturning a 3-1 defecit aganst Juve... Lets NOT get too confident !
  13. StuckinPoland
fulham are clearly good enough to beat us tonight. remember, we've lost at home to both stoke and wolves.

if they get the first goal tonight, will we revert to long ball? i really believe the first goal will be crucial and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it goes to penalties tonight.

there's a reason we're favourites. but which fulham will show up tonight? if it's the fulham without any pressure, we're in for a very tough night.

ps - the 5 strikers at the WC should be Rooney, Carlton Cole, Zamora, Bent, Defoe. Capello will probably take Crouch and Heskey over Bent and Zamora. If Walcott scores a few, I could see Defoe missing out too.
  14. Boony
If we have to take three strikers from Fulham, West Ham and Sunderland, we have no chance in the world cup. They have hardly had ANY international experience between them, so why take them ? Crouch has a fantastic record at international level, so he is a definate.

How many are you expecting Wallcott to score when Defoe is on 17 and he is on 2.. plus he has been playing on the wing of his 10 appearances, so how will he "replace " Defoe for England?
  15. jenko
I'd be happy to have zamora or Kevin doyle as a 4th choice striker for spurs. Both 100% players who keep the opposition back 4 pinned back at all times. Both maturing and getting better with every season. Both good in the air too. At the moment I'm not too impressed with Crouch and still wanna see more performances from EG before being happy with the thought of them for next season.... we'll see.
  16. alfiespurs
:clap: Well stated Jenko, I am really twitchy today. I really do not rate Crouch, as I said lovely guy, but NOT ruthless. Eidur is an intelligent player ( thought he was FAB at Chelsea). However, without Pav or Defoe I am EXTREMELY nervous .. Agreed, Doyle or Zamora would do a decent job for us, if we let Crouch go !
  17. ravo
All these Zamora vs Bent/Defoe arguments are ridiculous. They are very different players.

Zamora is a no.9 hold-up type forward. He feeds playes like Defoe and Bent. Zamora is in great form at the moment and I thought he was probably their most dangerous player in the first leg. People who didn't think he put in a shift that game really need to watch it again. He was the focal point of most (if not all) their attacking moves.
  18. UbeAstard
Very good observance on Doyle, he has been impressing me too recently. Just wait for the unrealistic people who think we should be buying Torres saying 'he isnt good enough'.
  19. Boony
Players like Zamora and Doyle have improved from playing every game, so I dont see them accepting a role as a 4th choice striker. Hardly any other even has a 4th choice striker, are we not being a little arrogant ?
