Response to losing Alderweireld

What would be the best solution to Alderweireld leaving?

I realise this is still very much a hypothetical question, despite the picture that is emerging appearing to suggest that the Alderweireld situation might well conclude in him leaving for his 'market value' this summer.

In the event of him leaving, however, I think the question of how we replace him is an interesting one, and so worthy of a separate thread for people to share their thoughts in.

The main decisions appear to be whether we:

1) spend the money on attempting to replace him directly, by buying a top-class centre-back of comparable quality (as far as that's possible), with a view to that player being a 1st choice, senior member of the squad

or

2) give Dier that role, and then spend the money on buying another top class defensive midfielder to fill the position that Dier moving back would vacate in the midfield. Given what Pochettino has said about seeing Dier's best position as being in defence - and of him having the potential to be the best centre-back in the league - this idea would likely be on his mind, you would think.

3) Back Sanchez and Foyth to step up, and then promote Carter-Vickers to 4th choice CB/buy a new young centre back to compete with Sanchez and Foyth.

I'll put this into a poll as well so people can vote on there as well as discussing thoughts.

Shall we just leave it to the media to wang on about this?

Could do, though my point isn't really about whether he's going to leave or not, just hypothetically what the best solution would be if he did, more just as an interesting debate than because it is a looming reality. So its a separate topic from what the media are discussing.

Dier will become a very good CB I feel

Probably best to discuss this in the player watch thread to get more responses

I have a hunch he’s already signed a new deal that’ll be announced soon.

If he leaves we replace him with any defender who has, or has had, links with Ajax. They tend to do quite well.

Yeah, just thought having a separate threat might make it more explicit as a discussion. Will post in the thread as well.

I think Dier has a concentration issue.

I also think Sanchez will be one of the best in the World by the time he's 25.

Bring in De Ligt to continue with our Ajax theme. Already has experience of playing alongside Sanchez. Even if Toby stays I’d still bring him in as his eventual replacement!

Let Dier take Toby's place and let Foyth take Dier's CB place. Bring in a CM.

Either use CCV or another academy player for the odd cup game.

Are we surprised? He done something similar at Southampton to move up the food chain.

We might not like it but that’s how it’s done, this time it could be us losing out.

Great player but we will find a replacement

Sanchez/Foyth for Right CB
Vertonghen/New signing Left CB

Maybe a year early to let Alderweireld go if really necessary

I don't even really want to think about this at this point but...

Dier to take Toby's position
Foyth to take Dier's backup CB position
Amadou Diawara to take Dier's position in CM

Vertonghen is 31 in 2 months, he can't have that many years left in him. We absolutely need to bring a CB to replace Toby if he goes.

Has anyone asked Dier if he wants to be a CB full time?

Since when did you have to ask a players permission to state hypothetically, on a fan forum, that if a certain chain of events happen they should play a position for the team who pays them £50000-60000 a week?
