And it looks like Berchiche is playing as the left-sided CB with Dervitte on the bench. Berchiche has played there for the youth team - according to Spurs Odyssey reports.

However, I really don't understand the Dervitte situation. If he's fit enough to be in the reserve squad, surely he needs to play. I don't see the point of hauling his ass to Brum and sitting him on the bench.

Yep. A bit of a tease as he was the only player I said OOHHHH about when I saw his name on the team sheet.

82mins: GOAL - VILLA. Berchiche fouled Forrester in box, penalty awarded, slotted home by Harewood.
Villa 3, Spurs 1

Gutted.

Dervitte came on for the last 20 minutes. Probably that was what was planned.

A lot of reserve team regulars missing (Mills, Riley, McKenna, Maghoma), which may explain the poor showing. Even so Clive is not going to be happy.

How good is Rose?. Is he close to the first team?

He plays regularly for England in his age group :); Leeds fans were pissed when he signed for us ; and he's got very positive reviews for his impact in youth team games from Spurs Odyssey:hump:.

Just as crucially, he's a very fast genuine lefty, with a good cross. So, given we don't have any genuine lefties in the squad, and Ramos likes to play with two fast down-the-line wide players, I'd say he's potentially closer to the first team than any other of our kids. In that he potentially fills a need. Of course ultimately it all depends on whether he looks the part for the ressies, and what Ramos is seeing in training.

Interesting. If a player's coming back from such a serious knee injury, with all the rehab and gym work required, do you think 20 minutes match play is a good idea? If 20 minutes is all you're fit enough for, I'd say go back to the training ground for another fortnight. Or would you say it's important to get gametime under the belt, no matter if it's only a few minutes?

It's the Spurs way unfortunately.

Saw him play the second half against Portsmouth, which was his reserve team debut. Looks promising but not a first-team prospect this season, I'd say.

all the rehab and gym work cant match a game situation, even if they have the best gym avalable they are best to be given a run out in a game for 20 odd mins and building it up to not only get match fit but to make sure nothing flares up with the injury they had.

so afew mins run out will not get him match fit, but will start getting him there

It also protects other muscles which are always vulnerable after such a long lay off.

Easing players back in after such a serious injury is the norm.

That's true, and I'm sure Dervitte would have been desperate to get back on a football field in a match situation.

However, I remember those fans' reports of Terry Dixon suffering what sounded like a recurrence of his terrible knee injury playing for the youth team (and I still haven't seen any official club comment on the incident). It's a tricky one - football is a contact sport, and I'm sure the players do want to play proper, competitive football as soon as possible.
