If i was competing, i'd charge all my friends a tenner each to carry their phones - even with one incubator each, that's still two quality eggs hatched per phone. Pokelympics.

Couple of weeks to go so a thread seems appropriate.

Everything seems rather messy at the moment what with the Zika virus and now the damning report has just been released confirming state-sponsored doping at Sochi.

Zika virus only affects golfers so nobody else needs to be worried about it.

Not really feeling the buzz for these Olympics. Probably just because it was so cool having them here last time that it's just rubbish it isn't here all the time.

Will probably get more into it once it starts though. Always like to randomly get into one of the events in a big way despite not understanding it at all.

Feel the same way. I was so pumped for London 2012 (I've got shitloads of memorabilia, and I ended up watching pretty much everything), and had the pleasure of going to a couple of events, I'm finding it difficult to really look forward to these Olympics.

I made a long list last time of Sports with no bloody place in the Olympics. Sadly, apart from rhythmic gymnastics, they were all sports GB got medals in.

Proof that Russian government officials were doping athletes at Soichi 2014 and London 2012. Also footballers involved as was head of Russian FA. Sounds like Rissia will be banned from Rio. I hope they lose the WC too but unlikely

Having just read some of the report the level the ruskie's went to warrants them being cast into the sporting wilderness for at least ten years.

Should Russia lose the WC because of a) doping, b) racism, c) hologanism or d) corruption?
I know this is the Olympics thread. The doping seems to be on an incredible scale. It seems that this was at a government level. I feel sorry for the athletes. If a Russian official asked you to take drugs, I don't think many would have the guts to say no. Did any Russian athletes die / disappear in strange circumstances in last 4-5 years?

Got to feel sorry for the Russian intelligence officer who had to assist this. He probably joined up thinking he would be defending his country but instead had to handle other people's piss.

Russia may be banned entirely

IOC react to Russian doping crisis

Russia must wait to learn if it can send a team to next month's Olympics after calls for it to be barred from the Rio Games for operating a four-year, state-sponsored doping programme.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it will "explore the legal options" before deciding whether to implement "a collective ban" on all Russian competitors for the global showpiece, which starts on 5 August.

In the meantime, the IOC says it plans to re-test all Russians who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

I don't understand why there's any question about it.

They should be banned for the next two Olympics and also have all their other sportsmen/women tested ASAP.

Cannot believe that they will be having a World Cup in 2 years.

I always enjoy the track and field stuff, will no doubt watch the highlights. Not too fussed about anthing else although the London olympics had me rooting for team GB in everything. Even shitty stuff like archery.

It's disappointing that they won't be able to compete; especially for those athletes who didn't transgress but it's hard to see what other choice there was.

I'm amazed at the sheer audacity of the whole thing. Everyone knows there are athletes that cheat but to do it on such a scale and state sponsored is almost unbelievable. It's almost like the days of the Soviet bloc where it was rife and the female weightlifters looked more like men! They should be banned from this Olympics at the very least. Harsh on the ones that didn't cheat but a very clear message needs to be sent.
