Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell Dead

bbc.co.uk

Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell was taken to hospital after collapsing towards the end of his side's 5-3 victory over Dundee United.
The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground just as he was about to be replaced with Marc Fitzpatrick.

O'Donnell was treated for around five minutes on the field for what is thought to have been a seizure.

And the former Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday player was carried off on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee spoke briefly to the press after the game before going to hospital to find out how the skipper was.

We took Clarkson off because he got a fright from the nature of the collapse

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee

"He's had some sort of collapse," he said.

McGhee said O'Donnell's substitution had been "an absolute coincidence" before his sudden collapse.

"We just felt we would save him a bit for Wednesday," said the manager.

O'Donnell's nephew, David Clarkson, was substituted moments later after scoring two goals in the Scottish Premier League match.

McGhee said: "We took Clarkson off because he got a fright from the nature of the collapse.

"A few of the boys got a fright."

A news conference has been called at Wishaw General Hospital, which will be addressed by chief executive Ian Stillie.

what was the original thread title?

There seems to have been an increase in this kind of thing recently... very worrying as more and more players are so finely tuned....

It seems to me that these deaths are on the increase (usually young men 15 to mid 20's, including my own, eldest son, at 18). People are very unaware of "Sudden Death Syndrome" until it happens to some one well known or "close to home" but in Ireland we have one death a week, on average.
My thoughts are with his family tonight.

I mentioned about this football thing in the original title.

I just hope it hasn't struck again

Awful, I never knew who he was, but that's terrible. I can't imagine what his family are going through.

Terrible news. All the tributes focus on what a fine human being he was. Must have been awful for his nephew who played and scored in the same game. And for four children to lose their father at such a young age - tragic.

Are more of these cases being reported or are they happening more frequently? Foe, Feher, Puerta plus some youngsters earlier in the year. Are these conditions not being foind by screening?

RIP. Tragic, so young. How sad for his family.

Seizure - sounds like it could have been a stroke.

If it turns out to be an arrhytmia due to abnormalities of the heart muscle then these are not always detected by ECGS .

I'm sure professional players are also subjected to untrasound echo tests pretty regularly .

I suffer from dilated cardiomyopathy and my understanding is that the heart muscle has a superb supply of blood and can atrophy or dilate in as short as a couple of weeks if something triggers it to .
