How old is Mahrez? Not sure there'd be much sell in value so it's a big gamble financially

26. So his next contract will be his peak years.

I get the model we are trying to follow, but if we want to win trophies we can't just buy players solely with future resale in mind.

Ive thought hed be a great signing for us as we need someone like him in the team. But its not happening. We're getting foyth, gazzaniga, barkley and a slight possibility at sessegnon in this shambles window
OK so who do you think we need to make this window not a shambles?

Always wanted Mahrez, in my opinion he is the best wide forward, dare I say game changer, we can realistically get. He offers goals/assists and that bit of unpredictability that we sometimes miss

I never open Martial thread because I know it's never gonna happen, but is there something going on with Mahrez or just another FM hopes?

It really mystifies me why we haven't moved for him. He would add a new dimension to our attacking options and I'm sure Poch would get the best out of him. I way prefer him over Barkley.

I find it strange that there is so much focus on Mahrez's supposed lack of workrate and tracking back in this thread, but very little of the same discussion about Ross Barkley's lack of off the ball work. In roughly the same number of minutes over the last two seasons, Mahrez has double the interceptions of Barkley and significantly more successful tackles. If you watched Barkley the last few months of the season where his performances tailed off, you'd see a player that certainly didn't look like he was interested in getting stuck in and pressing high up the pitch (he also had a poor last 10 games attacking wise, with 0 goals and 1 assist while Everton's form dipped).

Not really the same position, but I agree with you otherwise.

Mahrez would immediately challenge for the first team and add a huge attacking threat; Barkley would be firmly second fiddle to Eriksen & Alli and wouldn't be expected to offer nearly as much in the way of goals. Would the latter have even come on yesterday, and if so for whom?

My concern with Mahrez is that at 26, on £100k a week & likely to cost upwards of £40m he doesn't really tick all of Levy's bargain boxes (especially after the Sissoko debacle last year) we're less likely to go all out for him in a way that I think we would if he were younger and playing on the continent.

My gut tells me this is exactly the type of scenario where we'll enquire on deadline day and end up being marginally outbid by Chelsea or whoever leaving us with nobody to fill that role.

For one of those this statement is true, for the most part. For the other I can see him riding some pine in the near future. I will leave it up to you to decide which is which.

Rather play Edwards than buy Mahrez. Their playing style is incredibly similar.

Roma were bidding around £32M. I think somewhere in the £35-40M region might get him. I can still see this happening late in the window if other targets don't happen, and I think it would be a good move for us if it did.
He signed a 4 year contract last August. With 3 years left on it there's nothing stopping Leicester asking for whatever they want. He's clearly a £50m player in the current market with 3 years on his contract.

This must be a joke? Edwards has struggled to get game time for England U19's, Mahrez has been Leicester's best player for the past 2 seasons & propelled them to the most impressive PL upset in history. Edwards may have potential but the 2 can't currently be spoken about in the same breath.

Except one is a title winning, former PFA player of the year, experienced international, and the other looked good in 15 minutes against Gillingham.

Mahrez has had one good season. We're not talking about some proven world beater here. We're talking about a guy who hasn't shown his PFA award wasn't a purple patch and has a history of not working hard enough and being late to training.

I'd sooner put the wages and time elsewhere either on someone more proven or give it to a developmental player like Edwards.

Clearly you don't watch much of Leicester. Mahrez is as close to world class as there is in the PL.

EDIT: for those that disagree can you name better performers over the last 2 seasons? Hazard you'd probably call world class, was clearly the best PL player last year, but where would you have ranked him and Mahrez after the previous season when everyone was writing Hazard off and Mahrez had propelled relegation fodder to the most unlikely PL victory in history? I'd argue that since summer '15 Mahrez has been the better player overall, or at least equal. Remember Mahrez you can stick 2 men on him each game & effectively mark him out the game, he would be different gravy for a top 6 club where he gets the attention taken off him.

Who else? Sanchez? Carried Arsenal but has gone missing in games & can throw his toys out of the pram. Arguably better than Mahrez but don't think there's much in it. Coutinho? Pogba? Sadio Mane? De Bruyne? Eriksen? Martial? Mahrez is at least in that category, & for me certainly ahead of most in terms of star quality.
