Hunter this evening has said the following....

@BumperGraham: I must say I admire #Soldado as a person and as a striker but that's a very big price indeed.
Not sure that Valencia are playing this right

I agree with him regarding the price, it's a obscene fee imho....

So how would you spend the money to take us to the next level?

£35 million for Andy Carroll was obscene

Obscene?! What. He's a world class striker in his prime. I mean that implies he's in the ten million pound bracket or something.
Considering what Jovetic and Negredo went for, i'd say it's fair value for a classy striker with pedigree in Soldado!

I wonder if we could do a deal that is dependent on Champions League qualification, but has the potential to be more lucrative for Valencia? For example, a guaranteed 26 million Euro fee, with an additional 8 million guaranteed Euros if Tottenham qualify for the group stages of the Champions League. That way, they could save face by spinning the fact that they got above their asking price for Soldado, with the very real chance that they'll actually get their money given the quality of our side, and we'll also be protected in the sense that a Champions League qualification would more than cover any future fee owed.

No because that would be f**king stupid as we would be spending way more than our valuation of the player.

Sounds like it may be more of them wanting the future installments guaranteed rather than tied to player performance.
Yes. Let's just hope we're quibbling over the time-frame and details because if that is so, we're a way down the line on this deal, including the actual amount to be paid.

Agree, not obscene.

Maybe £5m overpriced but we need this payer and now or our footballing ambitions.

Sometimes you have to take the hit

Given our needs for this type and quality of player, to brand it as obscene is bordering on the ridiculous.

£25m an obscene fee for a proven 20+ goal a season striker? One that has proven himself on the two highest stages, international and champions league football.

Alrighty then.

Look at his goal return, you have to pay top money for players like this:

We've been after a top striker for how long and now we might have a chance people are worried about the money. If we buy him then we can afford him, we're not going to go bankrupt if this goes tits up so let Levy worry about finances. He could be sold back to Spain for a small loss in the worst case scenario.

100%

There are such small margins at this end of the league, signing him would make this a good or bad window. That simple for me.

Clever.

But would a payment over time not take into account that difference in worth?

Also clever.

That means that not getting rid of all the cash here and now, but keeping some of it in the bank (even though it will go eventually) makes more sense?

Yeah.

We may need liquid cash to fund other things, whether it be transfers or facility development.

Also, although you're right in essence we're paying the same amount but the difference is if we pay in instalments we can offset some of the load via different revenue streams e.g season ticket sales or merchandise.

tl;dr: Instalments lessens the financial burden on a club.

Sometimes you have to overpay for a player you want if they can make the difference. Bayern over-paid for Javi Martinez. They said this public he is not worth 40 million. Martinez allowed them to win the champions league. And no one now is criticising the decision to sign Martinez.

I'm still in disbelief that Liverpool voluntarily paid Newcastle £35million for the services of Andrew Carroll!

We allegedly offered around £23m I think I read on here recently which was also insane for a then half season wonder

My take, for what it is worth, is that the fee has been agreed but we have offered part of the total in add ons (appearances, CL performance etc.) which perhaps they cannot "sell" to their creditors as add ons may, or may not transpire. They seem to be happy to take the the total payment over a period as, in this way, the total payment is guaranteed to be received, albeit over a period of time. This is probably an acceptable arrangement for their creditors but I guess DL has seen their soft white underbelly and is playing hard ball on the amount of the initial sum to be paid and the structure of the subsequent payment of the balance. It is now just a game of poker and my money is on DL to get his way.
