Robinson to be dropped by England?

The Daily Mail is reporting today that McLaren is set to play Carson in goal against Austria and if he plays well keep him in against Croatia.

This seems bizarre timing to me - I think most people could have understood him being dropped a month or two ago (in fact, it may have helped him regain some confidence at the time if he was out of the limelight for a while), but he has been approaching his old form in recent weeks.

If true, it gives Robbo mixed messages this week, with Ramos having said he is happy with him.

I didn't see Ramos's remarks this week.. can anyone enlighten me please?

As for dropping for England, I'm surprised it would be for Carson, James maybe as he has the experience, especially for what could potentially be one of the most important games we have had for a long time.

That is a good vote of confidence for Robbo, its all in his hands now - remain fit and also start to look fitter (weight gain), and keep playing with confidence on the pitch.

Must admit recently, I am starting to feel more confident with Robbo.

Might be a good thing getting dropped for country though - make him work harder for club.

it would make sense for Carson to get a game v austria- as for croatia - well let's see how important the game is first - to be honest I can see reasons for and against dropping Robbo -it's Mclaren's call - after all if the croatia game is important his job probably depends on it

from my very limited perspective Green looks like the best English keeper this season - but he's not in the squad

You have to look at it from the other point of view though - it's not just about Robbo's performances, it's about Carson's as well, and he has been excellent so far this season, and keeps on getting better. I don't think even the most biased Spurs fan could claim Robbo has had a better season than Carson this season, nor Green or James...on form alone, he shouldn't be near the squad let alone first choice.

I don't think Robinson will let us down if he plays (and while he might not play the full 90 against Austria, I'd be stunned if McClaren dropped him for Croatia) but Carson deserves a go - he's younger, currently playing better and IMO has the potential to be much better than Robbo in the future...so why not pick him?

Personally I'd say Green deserves a go ahead of Carson though, he's been excellent this season.

I don't see any reason for Carson not to get a shot, and Green can count himself unlucky not to be in the squad. No-one's going to be seriously tested anyway. At least I hope they aren't.

It would also stop every error he makes for England being splattered across the back pages. Let someone else be Aunt Sally for a change.

And for a view from someone who really knows what they're talking about, and a comparison of Robbo's record for England with James's which may surprise some:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2007/08/24/sfnbob124.xml

It's good to see Bob Wilson backing up my view that shots/save ratio is the most effective long term way to judge a keeper.

And on that note, since Ramos started/he was injured (or possibly dropped), Robbo has had 8 shots on target and let in one goal which is 87.5% and therefore in stark contrast to the 60% or so we have seen previously.

Whatever the reason for this change in fortune hopefully he can keep it up and prove some of the doubters, like myself, wrong.
