    Pavlyuchenko to fight for place.

Roman Pavlyuchenko insists he is determined to win a regular place under Harry Redknapp at Tottenham.

The 27-year-old has not been a regular starter for Spurs following his £13.7million move from Spartak Moscow in January.

Still the Russian marksman, who has been linked with a possible summer move, has bagged 14 goals and he is determined to make his mark at White Hart Lane.

He came off the bench to score the winner against West Ham and he was delighted with his strike.

"When you are on the bench for five games in a row, when the press are getting

to you, to come off the bench and score straight away is incredibly important," he told Sport Express.

"The goal will certainly give me strength for the battle for a place in the team.

"My belief that I would definitely get my chance encouraged me. I had to keep myself fit and in form so as not to miss it.

"I needed that goal like never before - even more so as it was the winner."

I feel Arry see's Pav as a bit laid back and lazy, i dont particulaly mean on the pitch as a whole but i get the impression that he dosnt really want to learn the language and isnt trying very hard to do so, which Arry could see as lazy/unmotivated.

You cant argue with his goal ratio and he looks happy enough so i can only think its got something to do with this side of his personality that Arry dosnt like.

I like him a lot and hope he stays and works it all out.

he just needs to be 'slapped' (as his Spartak manager said) from time to time. hiddink said he thought pav was pretty lazy and unfit but then he lost a lot of weight and got fit in about two weeks to make the Russia squad for the Euros, so he's not the most naturally motivated of players but can certainly put in the effort if you keep reminding him...

Of course he wants to learn the language, he`s admitted before he wants to get involved with the banter. He hardly spoke any English before he joined, so he`s not going to pick it up in a few months

still not convinced by Pav...... nowhere near enough goals or assists in prem league....... too many cup goals........its not a case of you can only score against whats in front of you........ he's had games in the PL.

bent 30 games (11 as sub) 10 league goals 2 assists
keane 8 games 3 league goals 3 assist
pav 24 games (7 as sub) 5 goals 1 assist
    defoe 3 games 2 goals 1 assist

i get the he needs time to settle in the PL and he's had a long season but the amount of times i've shouted get in the box at Pav, with my wife telling me he cant hear me, is getting frustrating.

for all of bents shortcomings he does get in the box to have a chance.

considering he's playing back to back seasons (russian & PL), a european tournement, is adjusting to the PL and all this without a proper rest or decent pre- season, i think he's had a pretty good debut season for us,
We'll see the best of him next season IMO
  6. Boony
Bottom line is, the goals he scores have been very important for us and have been against a number of top sides, with top defenders. So he obviously has the ability. Until he understands the languages properly he wont learn to play the manager wants him too. We are scoring goals and doing well again, so there is no reason why he cant give him time to adapt

I hope you are shouting get in the box to Robbie Keane as well.

I reckon the key to understanding Pavlyuchenko's settling-in period is in comments he made, in some detail, in an interview shortly after he arrived, when he described how he'd had a very unsuccessful time at school. He's not an academic type, even for a footballer, and obviously has no confidence in his intellect, which is having an impact on his attempts to learn English. He also comes across as very naive and as a bit of a bumpkin, which can be charming and hilarious in interviews.

That's not to say he's not an "intelligent footballer", as the type of intelligence required is very different. He sees space, he sees angles and he has footballing imagination. He's a very talented striker, but he is going to have to work hard to build up his upper body strength if he's going to develop into a striker who can score 20+ goals a season in England. He gets pushed off the ball too easily for a man of his size and he drifts out of games - he needs more stamina, so he can do 90 minute stints every week without losing his effectiveness.

for a player who was totally alien to the type of football played here - I think he's made a great start and can only get better as he improves his stamina, english, awareness of the english game and has a reasonable rest period and a pre season behind him.

Some people say that he doesnt want to tlearn the language but I think he comes across as really trying to work for th team considering hes played almost 2 seasons and a championship in the summer without a rest. i think a rest was what Harry was giving him!
Just have to compare his attitude with that of huddlestones!! Much more professional and wanting to fight!!

I think he's had a tough introduction, coming off the back of a full European season, then the Euros and then coming to the PL. I still think he is a better player than Bent and offers a lot more. His goal on Saturday was excellent and he made it out of nothing.
Given a bit of a rest in the summer and getting more settled in London will make a big difference.

think hiddink and harry have both highlighted he needs to work harder. he has an immense amount of talent, he can seem lazy at times.

he also has that incredible knack of being in the right place at the right time.

you can see the difference knowing the langauage makes, Arshavin has settle straight away on the pitch (not so much off), Pav is settling but he needs to learn the language and try and put in a shift every game.

Id like to see him have a nice summer off and start next season with Defoe/Keane, I think time will only make him a better player here...selling him in the summer is pointless especially for Kenwyne Jones who has flattered to deceive too often for me personally
  13. parj
he's been involved in 6 goals in the 8 games he's played........ im sure he's doing something right........ and the our rise up the table hasnt just been a conicidence with him in the side.
  14. Boony
We have been linked with KJ again in the press today. I do beleive we need a physical prescence up front (which Pav isnt) but I dont beleive we really need four first team strikers.... With the acedemy and reserves doing so well, id prefer Fraser Campbell being replaced by one of our own
  15. pheg25
compared to Berba's work rate the man is almost a live wire on the pitch...

to me any criticism is harsh - good first season which i think will turn into a successful second season!

he is learning the english game, language and lifestyle - this takes time... years for some people!
  16. meys91

you want him to score less cup goals?
  17. JoeT
"Bit of a bumpkin"...D.M. Love it!
  18. glenda
Cant fault the boys attitude, first class.

After Rebrov & the sulking Bulgarian. Pav a good lil striker Harry will let him have a break & then see whats the crack with him.

PS Buy Hulk of Porto, this kid is gonna be the Truth, sell Bent he is never gonna get any better.. bless him.. COYS
  19. parj
id like him to score more goals against PL sides than the like of Burnley! Unless of course you think beating Burnley is worthy of a 13m striker.....i personally think a 13m striker should also be scoring in the PL a lot more than this one has.
