ESPN FC who seem to have a habit of rarely including us in their transfer news (maybe for good reason) has put us as the first name in the hat of prospective destinations for Lukaku pending a Chelsea push for Cavani this summer:

"Chelsea...preparing a big money move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani in the summer. Here’s the kicker though -- the club will have to sell Belgium international Romelu Lukaku to fund the transfer...Tottenham, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are waiting to pounce."

On the Move is usually pretty shit for rumors, especially with that first post of each day. It's a nice roundup of done deals and overall summary of the window though.

The thing is, Mata has a set precedent. In the summer AVB wanted Mata but we couldn't get him as we thought Chelsea would never sell as said by AVB.

However I think they might sell now and it depends on whether they can get Costa, Rooney or Falcao in.

I think they'd sell but my problems are 1) Chelsea selling to us 2) winning a bidding war for Lukaku and 3) him wanting to join...though AVB is gone now. Wishful thinking IMO.

Lukaku, 20, is aware that he is likely to be sold by Chelsea at the end of the season if the Blues receive a bid of around £23million.

That's an incredibly specific, incredibly high price.

I'd say, in the current state of things, that's not a bad price. They bought him for 18m two years ago, and since then he's taken the Prem by storm.

However Chelsea would not sell Mata to us and they won't sell lukaku.

If we dished out £38M this Jan they would've. I think summer was impossible for anyone to get Mata as Mourinho was still figuring out his squad.

But still, I agree. Don't think they'd give us Lukaku.

Chelsea's business model is all about the money now so they will sell to the highest bidder, if that is us then they'll sell to us, however something makes me think we won't be.

Mourinho said that he would have sold Mata to Arsenal if "he just asked me"

I said this so many times in the Mata thread just to get optimistic ratings. Mourinho has said himself today that had no other bidders and went with best offer.

Same will apply with Lukaku. Problem is I can't see us ever being the highest bidder for any player.

In the summer, people wanted to pay that kind of money for Benteke. Lukaku >> Benteke IMO.

I don't see Chelsea selling to us. We could offer them 50m for him and they'd probably still say no. I'm not sure why they sold Mata to United given they are a bigger threat to the title than us. But for us it's a bit more personal and I can't imagine Chelsea selling us a player that could help us close the gap on them and possibly surpass them. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Mata said he would only accept a move to United which is what forced their hand a bit.

I don't think you become as rich & successful as Roman Abromivich by only doing business with people you like & refusing to do business with those you don't, business is business after all, grudges don't come into it.
What's the difference between Utd refusing to sell Rooney to Chelsea & us refusing to sell Modric, none really other than the media having a gang mentality over Modric not been allowed leave.
Chelsea have also done business twice in last year with Liverpool & there's every bit of bad blood between them two clubs, possibly more, than us & Chelsea.
If the money is right & the best offer clubs will deal with anyone, your only cutting your nose off to spite your face otherwise.

Abramovich became rich and successful through an onslaught of criminal activity, and is likely to be responsible for a large number of deaths. You couldn't pick a worse example of a 'business is business' person if you tried.
