Nice of him to get into shape when his playing career is finished. He's a legendary player to me but I don't get why he didn't put this kind of work in five years ago.

edit: The answer to your question:

"Four years ago in Milan I found out that I was suffering from a problem that is called hypothyroidism, a complaint which slows your metabolism, and that to control it I would have to take medication which is considered illegal in football. A lot of people should feel bad about their comments on my weight: I just wanted to explain that, now that I have reached the end."

Ronaldo in the current Madrid or Barca teams would outscore any of todays big name players in my opinion.

He was a genuine Brazilian - his technique was mind-bending. Today we see someone do a half a dozen step overs and he's having money thrown at him, but Fatty played in an era where the less talented teams had no problems with career ending tackles, it was a far, far more physical international scene. Skinny Ron would collapse in true sniper-victim fashion, but Fatty would ride them all out with a touch and a quick skip and he was off like a train again. Nothing could stop him when his tail was up.

Turned 40 yesterday.

Easily the best striker to ever grace the pitch.
As you can probably tell from my avatar, I hate Ronaldo.

Met him and Mario Zagallo after a match at Wembley in '95 when I had no idea who he was, although he actually scored in a 3-1 win for Brazil. He then became my go-to guy every time I played Sensible World of Soccer.

My dad took me to Paris in '97 to watch us play Brazil in the Tournoi. I already loved Romario from his Barca days, so to see Ronaldo play a part in Romario's winner was pretty special for me, even in the most uncomfortable stadium I've ever been to.

Great, great, great player.

Such a shame the 2 best CF's of my generation had shortened careers, Van Basten being the other

For a quick recap, if there's any youngsters reading this, scoffing at the praise in their €399 CR7 tracksuit top;

Club record (year, club, apps, goals) -

93 - 94 Cruziero 14 (12)
94 - 96 PSV 46 (42)
96 - 97 Barcelona 37 (34)
97 - 02 Inter Milan 68 (49)
02 - 07 Real Madrid 127 (83)
07 - 08 AC Milan 20 (9)
09 - 11 Corinthians 31 (18)

Total: 343 (247)

So, still wondering if he could do it on a rainy night at Stoke?

It's a real shame that he only played less than 350 games, in a time when others have doubled that figure.

Although we was fantastic it's only now I look back and realise just how good he was. Out of this world some of the skills.

Watching some of the thousands of clips on youtube of the guy, the one thing that stands out is how he never seemed to play for the foul, and would battle like some sort of crazed warrior to get the ball back. Bloody love that, so many times he could've hit the deck and would've rightly earned a free kick but the only thought in his head was getting that ball. It's sad that there's so little pride left in so many of the top players now.

I remember reading a copy of my dad's Daily Mirror back in '94 and they ran a double page story about the 17 year old 'new Pele' called Ronaldo. Held my interest from that point on, and was one of those rare instances of the Mirror getting it right for once (broken clocks and all that).

What an incredible footballer. For me, his defining achievement was coming back from that messed up Final performance in '98 to be top goal scorer in '02 and lift the World Cup. Massive strength of character.

Incredible player - one of the all-time great strikers. A better player than CR in his prime.

I fell in love with the way he bulldozed his way through defences. Once he was in full flight he was truly unstoppable, so impressive how he maintained close ball control at that speed, the way he could push the ball into a space where he could get his shot away under defenders presence was truly phenomenal. I'm sorry but Cristiano is simply not on the same level as this guy was.
