Good decision by him and great decision for Everton , it will extend his club career the same way it did for Paul Scholes when he retired from international football.

I am not English but he's been an outstanding servant for the England team.

Less than a week since Coleen announced she's pregnant again. Their 4th child, I think. Good decision all round; extend his capability to play for Everton, less travel, more time with the family, less pressure as captain of England when he's not been up to it for a while.

Plus, it's Kane's turn now :)

Call me a cynic but the timing makes me think he was waiting to see if he got into Southgates squad which will be announced v soon, he's obviously been told he's not in it and decided to give it up...dont blame hime really, he's scored loads of goals playing for mainly crap managers.

It seems to me he is at a stage where he wants to enjoy his football.

At Everton he'll be under less scrutiny and get to concentrate on just playing. He doesn't need the distraction of juggling international football with club football and won't get the same periods of time away from his family.

Good luck to him.

Now all we need is for the other 4000 English Professionals to do the same and we can finally put an end to the tedious, turgid, mediocre rubbish that is the England Football Team.

Then I finally get my shot.

Best of luck to him. I've spent the last two years slagging him off whenever he's played for England, so hopefully with this announcement he can focus on his club career and turn in some decent performances for EvertonI I'd like to see him do well to prove me (and most other English fans) wrong about him being way past it

In a statement Rooney said: "It was great that Gareth Southgate called me this week to tell me he wanted me back in the England squad for the upcoming matches. I really appreciated that.

"However, having already thought long and hard, I told Gareth that I had now decided to retire for good from international football.

"It is a really tough decision and one I have discussed with my family, my manager at Everton and those closest to me.

"Playing for England has always been special to me. Every time I was selected as a player or captain was a real privilege and I thank everyone who helped me.

"But I believe now is the time to bow out.

"Leaving Manchester United was a tough call but I know I made the right decision in coming home to Everton. Now I want to focus all my energies on helping them be successful.

"I will always remain a passionate England fan.

"One of my very few regrets is not to have been part of a successful England tournament side.

"Hopefully the exciting players Gareth is bringing through can take that ambition further and I hope everyone will get behind the team.

"One day the dream will come true and I look forward to being there as a fan - or in any capacity."

Pretty sure the article said he was set to be included but told Southgate politel no.

Fair play to him.
He has been a good servant to England and whilst he didnt always live up to potential, I wish him well.

I don't think you'll be the only one who would have thought this, to be fair.

Have to admit he looks very sharp and in good shape for Everton. A few misplaced passes last few games but has a lot of energy

He was interviewed yesterday saying he will be talking to Southgate and really hopes to be part of the England setup...

I guess he got answer and decided to step down on his own....

Then again... Coming out of international retirement seems to be the trendy thing to do lately.

I for one will never forget the goal he scored in the 2014 World Cup tournament against Uruguay, because it was the only goal he scored in a WC tournament. #englandrecordgoalscorer

53 international goals in what, 119 caps? It's not a bad return as @Gb160 pointed out, playing for mostly clueless England managers who had no idea how to build the team around him. They were too obsessed with making Gerrard and Lampard work.

He had the ability, look at his goal return for united.

I quite like that he's doing well at Everton. Q

How about 44 goals in 57 matches ?? that's not a bad return either. My apologies for quoting those stats but I just feel that Jimmy Greaves was an absolute icon as an England striker and am extremely bitter about the manner in which such a legend is now acknowledged by this club which he graced for so many wonderful seasons. He was, without doubt, the greatest striker I have ever seen in my life...a truly natural goalscorer.
