We only wanted him in the summer didn’t we?

Poch is great but to get a player in the World Cup squad before he joins the club? Not sure even a Poch can manage that!

He waits for us, he misses the World Cup, for me that’s why he joined Chelsea last month

We were interested in him last month and dropped our interest when it became apparent he was signing for Chelsea. The Chelsea move was orchestrated in the summer when he went back to Everton so they got him cheaper in Jan.

I think he’s done it to try and get in the England squad for the World Cup

People say he could have had us in the summer, but he wants to play now. Everton weren’t going to play him.

He's not going to get regular football at Chelsea unless there's some sort of massive injury crisis so that argument falls down right away, sorry mate. Even barring a crisis it seems fairly obvious Conte doesn't want him anyway so his game time will most likely be very limited. He's gone for the money and that's that.

No need to sorry mate;)
You’re probably right regarding his chances of regular first team football but I suspect he doesn’t see it like that. I suspect he thinks he’s more than good enough to play regularly there and that was key in his decision to go there.
His options were a little limited. Stay at Everton & wait for us and certainly miss the World Cup. Join Chelsea now and try and get playing regularly football to force your way back in the England squad for the World Cup.

Sure, the money is sweet, but I genuinely think he is aiming for Russia first and foremost.

"The Daily Mail say that, when Willian limped off injured, Conte wanted to bring Barkley on instantly.
But the Chelsea man was still warming up on the touchline, wearing his Blues jacket as well.
This supposedly infuriated Conte, who has been reluctant to pick him ever since."

Pathetic if true.

Where does he go next? Nowhere, assuming Conte leaves. He'll try to impress the new boss.

But as far as I'm concerned it was a massive bullet dodged for us.

Yes - that's what I recall happening when he came on as a sub against Ar*enal in his first appearance.

When he eventually came on, the 1st thing he did was trip himself up and fall flat on his face, before getting up and fouling Jack Wilshere.

If I remember correctly his third involvement was to run in completely the wrong direction in search of a through ball - after which things really started to go downhill for him. It was a debut performance so poor in comparison that it made Jordan Henderson look like Iniesta.

Channelling both Stevie G and Erik Lamela there.

Not so sure, I think Poch saw a lot in him and I reckon would have got a tune out of him but it's all academic now, he's an idiot for choosing money over his career.

eh? He may be an idiot - but probably not for that.

He had a serious injury, and, as a result, was never really in contention for Russia. Footballers have short careers. I don't blame any player who chooses to maximize earnings. Its easy to say the idealist in all of us would choose to play over money, but life is rarely that simple.

He’s at Chelsea. He’ll have lots of new bosses to impress.

Hasn't he been fit since the end of January? Or did he have a relapse?

What's £50k more a week gonna get you especially as you're more likely to sit on a bench compared to playing? In essence he's messed himself up because he's going to struggle for game time hence it being a poor choice.

Extra £50k/week over 4.5 years is £10M+ more than he would have had.

I don't blame anyone who says yes to that deal.

I can understand why some might want to play over the money, but football is business - and this was a sound business decision for Barkley.

How much extra would he get if he got into a team and played... Got into the England squad, got merchandise and other sponsorship?

Yes he took the easy money...... But no one will rember who he is in a few years.

We're massively speculating but what's the likelihood he's gonna be earning that in his next contract, chances are that if he's not playing or improving now he is potentially doing himself out of an improved contract/better move and a longer and more successful career.

Basically my point is that he chose the short term risk over long term benefit, going to a team who aren't stable and have a history of a revolving door policy for both managers and players and playing for a manager who was hinting that it will be his last at Chelsea means he chose the wrong move IMO
