If Barkley got a call from us asking him to wait until January then I would imagine there is a Gentleman's agreement this will be done early window.

Uh oh...a Levy 'Gentlemen's Agreement'... ...Modric fell for that one once

I know circumstances can change and anything can happen between now and January. I'd hope we were leading the hunt in Jan assuming we still want/need him then and he still wants us.

Time will tell.

Barkley walking away from that medical was a "game changer" but do Everton understand that?

If they have got the hump with Levy...there are reports they were refusing to deal with us...you would expect them to do the same again in January

Except they can't now...not now they know Barkley has got an independent mind and is prepared to say no to any alternative offers they might want to accept.

Deal could potentially be done very early in January...except...except I wouldn't put it past Levy to spin it out even more to save a few more pennies

As I understand it, the only reason Everton refused to deal with us was because we refused to increase our offer.

They'd have been happy enough to deal with us if we'd have offered £40m, but we were never going to do that, so why waste time with us when Chelsea were itching to spend more? Their ( Everton, but also Chelsea's) big mistake was not understanding that the player had his own ideas.

He doesn't have to go to the highest bidder. Everton have painted themselves into a corner. The only thing they can do is turn us down in which case Barkley most likely comes to us for free 6 months later.

Therein lies my concern. Barkley needs to be playing regularly with a World Cup on the horizon. If Everton don't accept whatever we offer, and continue to freeze him out, will he feel forced to take another move?

It will be a bit of an arm wrestle between Barkley and Everton, but in my opinion Barkley holds more of the aces and I'm not even sure Chelsea would go back in for him now,

No way Chelsea would go back for him after he turned them down already. Barkley can refuse all other offers. Point about the WC squad only really valid if we think Everton are really going to turn down the last chance of a fee and pay him not to play for another 6 months

Would take concrete interest from Mancs or perhaps Woolwich to make Everton think they hold any cards at all

Everton got greedy and treated him as an item. They knew he has his mind on Spurs and should have made the best deal they could with us. In stead they try to force him towards the highest bidder.

Now they can look forward to a 10m bid in january while paying wages to an injured player.

If we are aiming for zero net spend to keep the banks happy, it would mean we have just around £25m to go back in for him in jan. Which should be enough.

I don't believe we have to maintain a zero net spend to keep the banks happy.

Maybe not, it was one of the itk's that said it.
We do seem to try to keep a net spend around zero anyway since we started building the stadium (a little bit either way each year but over 5-6 years roughly zero).

Yes, we do. But I don't believe it's the banks who insist on it. I think (in fact I believe very strongly) it's the way DL has decided to operate, and he would happily and readily change if the right opportunity arose.

Him and Chris Camera. The pair of them are supposed to be ITK pundits, but they clearly had not one Scooby about what was going on. All they needed to do was read their own ticker which said that the Gomes deal had fallen down, just before Barkley said "stuff this" to Chelsea.
