Fulham's on-loan winger Wayne Routledge is targeting the busy Christmas and New Year period in which to nail down a regular place.

The Tottenham wide-man was in every Portsmouth squad for the last four months of last season during a loan spell at Fratton Park but made only three starts.

He has begun just five games for Fulham since the start of the current campaign but played a vital role in Monday's 2-1 win over Middlesbrough and is keen to take his chance again at home to West Ham on Saturday.

He also shone in a superb 2-1 win against Arsenal last month when coming on as a substitute at the start of the second half and said: "It was a great night for everyone involved.

"The most pleasing thing was the calibre of the performance. We played the type of football that you are so used to seeing from the top teams and to play like that against a team like Arsenal was all the more special.

"It was a real shame to follow that with defeat at Blackburn and then we took a bit of a battering in the second half at Liverpool in losing 4-0, but I was given a start against Middlesbrough and was happy with my performance."

Routledge was mainly selected because Fulham had horrendous injury problems with skipper Luis Boa Morte, midfield playmaker Claus Jensen, Papa Bouba Diop and Ian Pearce all ruled out.

But of those only Jensen has a good chance of returning this weekend and Routledge told the club's official website: "Of course, I would really like to play more but that is the manager's decision.

"He is always going to do what he feels is best for the club and you have to respect that, but with the amount of games that take place in the Premiership nowadays, especially over Christmas, it is important that you can call upon the squad to bring in players when others pick up injuries.

"I will just keep training hard so that when my chances come I am ready to prove my worth and hopefully keep a place in the team."

But Routledge, who will turn 22 early next month, is not about to sacrifice his Christmas dinner despite the demands of the festive programme.

He said: "Christmas time is a mad period for footballers, but with all our games around London this time (West Ham, Charlton, Chelsea and Watford are the next four) we will, hopefully, get some relaxation time with our families.

"I think the big dinner might be a bad idea, but I'm sure I'll be having something nice come Christmas lunch."

I had great expectations when this boy signed. However the turbo charged Oompa Lumpa has outshone him and I see little future for Wayne at Spurs, which is a shame because i always liked him at Palace.
Never really had a fair crack.

meh... no tears shed... i still hope he makes it, possibly even for our left if not as GENUINE competition for Azza on the right, but if he doesn't make it, so be it... neither did mendes and kanoute, both of whom have gone on to show their class!

If he is not getting regular football at Fulham then why did we send him on loan?
He could have kept our bench warm.
We have more games than Fulham so he would probably have played more for us.
Whether he would have done well for the Lilywhites considering the first part of my first sentence is another thing!

Good points but it was all part of the deal to bring Malbranque to the lane and I'm glad we did it. Although it made the start of the season tough when Lennon was injured it has worked out pretty well in the long run.

I think he can be recalled in January and it will be interesting to see if we do. Personally I doubt that we will but Jol may feel we have been a bit lacking at times when Lennon takes knocks or needs a rest.

Lets face it, Routledge was one of those who young uns that could have helped us to the 'next level' but basicaly we got there without him, i cant really see him having the quality needed to make us improve further.

Suggestions that Murphy may go to Fulham in Jan - if so I could see a 2 million price tag plus Wayne coming back early.

We could do with him oursevles over Christmas!

    Wayne will be back

Wayne will be back in Jan, notice he has been playing on the left for Fulham, but also will be a good back up when Lennon is tired and gets injured, I can see Martin using them both, as he likes natural wingers, he may switch them from left and right as both have speed and skill on the ball. may see that tanio will be sold in Jan, due to the many injuries he has suffered. Fulham may ask for Danny Murphy, if we ask for Routledge back.

Not seen yr name about before so am not guna jump on you for that pile of crap u wrote, Routledge WONT come back but Murphy might go in Jan because we have him covered with same or better, Routledge will be sold either in Jan or summer and will be replaced with a leftie. Nowt so sure.

    Why?

I think his point is that, with Lennon injured, we have no other out-and-out wingers in the squad.

Fair enough, but Ghaly and Malbranque haven't been doing too badly.

Would be nice to see him get a goodchance at Fulham with a string of games over the x-mas period. Would like to see him backat Spurs cos looks like we need some wide cover for RoadRunnerMEEPMEEP wen his injured, but like you say The Steed and Ghaly seem to handle the task pretty well too!

Saw the Fulham game on Sky - that's the best I've seen Routledge play for a long while (not that I've seen much of him :) Think we need him back now.

lets get him back and use him on the left.our coaching staff are a lot better than fulhams and im sure he will benefit form training with our squad and our coaches..we still have a lot of games to play and he would be beneficial to our squad.
