Run down on players vs Villa

After another poor performance, here's my run-down on how I thought we performed-

Gomes: No point ripping into him, keepers make mistakes from time-to-time. He made some good saves, but was at fault for creating the situations that required him to make last ditch saves. Getting to crosses is great; deciding to punch regardless isn’t so great.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
Corluka: wasn’t too good. He passed the ball to the touchline while under no pressure at one point. Made his transfer fee look very inflated

Dawson: I like him but it’s getting difficult to defend him. That pass to the touch line while in acres of space was shocking for a professional footballer.

Woodgate: Solid

Bale: needs another left-sided player in front or behind him. He’s less effective when he’s got to cover the left side on his own. Team imbalance impinges on his effectiveness more than any other player. I don't know why GDS isn't playing in front of him or Gilberto behind him.

Modric: should’ve tracked Barry for the 1st goal. Because he didn’t, Bale had to move in to cover Barry’s potential shot, leaving Reo-Coker more space to pick his spot. All players have to track back, especially in central midfield positions, so there’s no point saying it’s not his job, he shouldn’t have strolled back watching Barry tear into the box.

Huddlestone: should be deeply embarrassed by that ‘tackle’ in the lead up to the 1st goal. He’s one of the classiest players we’ve got, but accusations of lacking mobility and bite will stick if this is what he calls a tackle. otherwise ineffectual

Zokora: quiet

Lennon: looked dangerous on the ball, but the final ball was lacking again. Young is so much better than him it’s untrue. He needs to look at the videos of his emergence under Jol when he took players on and passed simply and effectively in dangerous areas.

Pavlyuchenko: showed sparks that he could be effective but he was quiet enough tonight. TO be fair, he didn't see much much quality service either.

Bent: fairly anonymous and our goal threat so far this year is brutal. The goal was a fluke that flattered us and him

Jenas: I’m a critic of his, but he showed the other midfielders what multi-tasking in midfield is all about. Without him, we wouldn't have upped our urgency, we would've been less threatening, and we would have conceded more. Spurs' man of the match.

Bentley: should’ve been a starter with King and a lefty to play with Bale. But didn’t distinguish himself when he came on. Needs to stop worrying about his hair and start dominating matches.

Giovani: lively but toothless

Ramos: For a fella who supposedly hates losing, he’s getting pretty used to it at Spurs. It’s all well and good making bold substitutions during matches, but making such a mess of the starting line up might not require major substitutions so much. Is he planning to only show respect to the top 4 this year again? Did he not play our strongest team because he felt we’d beat Villa with less than our 1st team (with an eye on mid-week)? If so and if he keeps it up, he’ll deserve the sack when he eventually gets it.

Villa are way better than us. Much more solid, much better balance in their team and squad, much more drive and determination, much more hard working, much better organized, much more consistent (in a positive way), and much more likely to have a successful league campaign than we are. They had a bad result against Stoke, but I wouldn't fancy us at Stoke at all at the moment. It could be argued that we’ve got better players on paper than Villa, but like all good clubs, they’re building a team rather than playing fantasy transfer football with the real thing. Good luck to them, they've got a proper set-up and a wonderful manager.

We've got a lot of work to do and a change in attitude toward more urgency is what's needed in the short term. Things might not be too bad over the longer term if we can get our act together before 1/4 of the season is gone.

Corluka: Clearly a centre back rather than a right back - Gunter should have started

Dawson:
Should never start in future unless injuries mean he has to

Lennon:
Thought he was our best player

Giovani:
should have started

Ramos: I agree with your comments

ive decided i figured out what the problem with our team is. i have all the answers!

our team is too pretty. the players each think that they are gods gift, and aren't willing or aren't good enough to do the graft, which was highlighted when jenas came on, not because he was like the others, but because he wasnt. im not saying I want aimless head-down spinebusters, but I think this match highlighted the importance, not for a veloso, but a Davids, someone nasty with tactical sense.

Honestly, if I was Ramos I'd make Bentley, Bale, Woodgate, Dos Santos, Corluka and Modric (but especially Bentley) shave their heads. I would also make lennon stop putting those ridiculous slits in their eyebrows, and instead of concentrating on looking good, they should be concentrating on playing well. they were atrocious as a team. I'd swap Villa's first 11 for ours if it came with their team ethic. Our supposed great midfield, even when we had our 'good' spell had very few ideas. Ok bent should have done better with the header but otherwise, very little service. Pavy looked slow and in shock. I was disappointed with Corluka's performance but because I expect so much of him.

Dawson - well...

No, Iagree with your comments
+ Ashley Young was allowed to cross as he did.
I blame the Daily Mail, Times & The Sun, & fat boy Benites.
The Hud was a dud & Zoko poped & so Bent he folded.
Time for our Manager to show himself !!

This was a mind numbing performance. On paper all our players have the individual quality to play top quality football. Today only Woodgate, Jenas, Bale showed they had some idea of what to do. However, the team tactics, if they were given any, were completely absent. To quote Brian Clough, or perhaps it was the Duke of Wellington; remember the 7 P's: Perfect Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Whatever the plans were, they were far from perfect & they made for a piss poor performance.

just got home from the hell hole.

he made a mistake, but i excuse gomes because but for him we would have been 3 down at half time.

bale was a shining light and one of the few reasons left to go to see that shit

woodgate has nothing to be ashamed of. up against much faster players he was not beaten once. shame his partner at centre back is not cut from the same cloth.

if nothing else, lennon worked his bloody heart out, and he started quite promisinly with some good runs. towards the end he and giovani seemed to link well.

pavlyuchenko showed enough in the first half to convince me of his talent, now lets hope he settles quickly because this team is in need of some proven firepower.

jenas came on, and i never thought i'd say this, and looked head and shoulders better than the rest of the midfield.

giovani is fast, has power, dribbles, crosses, passes. he is raw but he is instantly likeable and at least he is positive.

I would start these players for the next month at least and let them try to gel.

Dawson should not be allowed to wear our shirt again. I don't care how hard he tried, he keeps making the same mistakes time after time after time.

Corluka seems a capable player and i've seen him play brilliantly before, but I think he is too lacking in guile to be a right back. I cannot see him contributing from that position. I would have him at centre back and hope that he and Woody form an understanding, because I have lost hope in King if two weeks was not enough rest.

Huddlestone was abysmal. He did not play one good pass. He did not make one good tackle. He gave the ball away constantly. He was bypassed. He was lazy. He was truly awful and should not be allowed near our first team for a very long time.

Zokora was also awful, whoring himself out at every opportunity. I lost count of the amount of times he exposed his fat arse when a cross or shot was about to come in. Not good enough I'm afraid.

Now these three players get spoken about in the same breath. Costing a combined 48 million pounds, our three most expensive players, Modric, Bentley and Bent. Let's start at the end shall we? Bent is incapable. I don't care about his goals in pre-season, defenders don't mark in pre-season. He may be fast as fuck but he has the movement of a disabled slug. As for Bentley, I do not see his use. He cannot cross, he cannot pass, he is very slow, he has no dribble, he never gets close enough to the goal to shoot, he offers nothing defensively and he insists on taking every set piece despite his inability to deliver a good ball, while Bale who takes a perfect set piece is shunned. Bentley is one of the worst footballers I have ever seen at the lane, and I remember David Kerslake with all too much detail.

Now, those two I knew were useless before we signed them. I am supporting them when i'm there because I have no choice, I will never fail to support the club I love regardless of the wankers representing them. But the biggest dissappointment for me is Modric.

I expected a player who at the european championships was taking defences apart, driving his team forward, playing through ball after through ball and running past players majestically. Instead, I see a scared and weak shell of a player who cannot so much as control the ball never mind pass it. I will remain patient, because unlike the other two expensive flops he is new to this league, but he had better buck his ideas up quickly.

On that note, given my appraisal of sed players, I would be quite keen on the following team starting the next few games and hopefully gelling into something worth my emotion:

.................Gomes
Gunter Corluka Woodgate Bale
Lennon Jenas O'Hara Giovani
..........Pavly Campbell

I hope that Levy and co see the difference between allowing a team to be built over a period of time rather than buying a hundred new players each season. O'Neil has built a team over the last few years and now have a team who know each other and playe as a team because of that.

We have a team that can, and should be a great one but whats the point if as they start to develop a team relationship with each other only for an influx of players at every transfer window!

The season before last we had no problem scoring but a bad problem defending. All we needed was a couple of class defensive players....but no...we got a load of players that really haven't done much and most of which have now moved on!

We will get better i am sure but we are gonna have to start grinding out some wins!

pretty much spot on except for the last few paragraphs.
For me, we picked the wrong players for this game. Villa are a counter attacking team with loads of pace and we needed to match them with youth and skill (see above formation)
With a bit more tinkering im sure Ramos will get it right!!!!!
Heres to a really :-( life long Yid.

Its sad to blame individuals like bentley who played 45mins & modric who played 20 - very very sad indeed, infact i am embarrased for you.

Bentley is one of the best right sided midfielders the premiership has seen over the las few seasons, give the fella a break & if ramos gives him a run of games out the right then i am sure he will come good.

The team isn't performing as a whole & i have no idea what our best 11 is,
we have many concerns as spurs fans lately i realise this, things need to settle down quick but the club as a whole is to blame lately & not individuals like bentley...

i started reading this and thought wow this guy has it down to a tee...bale Is our best player and was a shining light tonight..lennon worked hard and looked lively and DID link up well with gio, jenas was good, pav DOES look promising and woodgate was solid...
..however i sympathise with your anger i think you are a little harsh on Bentley who looked v.lively and sparked some good moves for us when he came on...Huddlestone did have a couple of stinking moments but he also positioned himself well on occasion and was strong on the ball, but i agree his distribution leaves a lot to be desired..and as for bent, call him lucky or say the goal flattered him but he is a goalscorer and was in the right spot to stick it in..
..But i must agree with you about Modric, the player we all saw and believed to be buying is represented by a mere shadow of the lynchpin in the croatian midfield in the summer..
..i wander how long he's out for and if he will perform for us like he has done for his country..and if he can, can he please do it against wigan on sunday!

lets be honest...we are shit. No where on that field did we match villa tonight. Even when Carew went off injured u just felt villa could still up the tempo. Dawson & modric were awful whilst on the pitch, and did bent touch the ball more than 3 times? Pavy looked slower than teddy sheringham. We seriuosly fucked up during the transfer window, we shud have broke the bank to get a match winner like arshavin. instead we got campbell.....yay.

Just got in from the game....It was not good.

Dawson had a nightmare. Our left side is non-existent. Corluka has a heavy touch.

We were so static, there was no running off the ball. Bale looked ok but he needs the support, he wasnt getting it from modric and bentley certainly didnt help him when he came on.

To top it all off i left early and missed the goal. serves me right, but you would have left early too if you had been watching that rubbish.

When Jenas came on he was our best player by a mile - bags of energy, composure on the ball, great passing - he ran the midfield - I have been defending him for a long time nows but it's only when he doesn't play that people realise how much we miss him

All he needs is someone decent alongside him....which brings me on to Tom Huddlestone - I was so angry with him tonight that I don't think I ever want to see this guy in a Spurs shirt again - he was by far and away the biggest reason why we lost that game - his lack of mobility is beyond belief, he strolls around the pitch showing no urgency at all & has no idea how to tackle - have you ever seen this guy bust a gut for the cause?? Thought not - Yes he is decent on the ball & has a good shot but it's not enough - I once had high hopes for this guy so I hate to say it but the Hudd must go!!

Lennon - top marks - tried he heart out, made things happen, so skillful & pacy on the ball & came very close to a stunning goal

Bale - Everything Huddlestone isn't - will bust a gut for the shirt - loads of energy & a top player

The rest - very average but early days for a lot of them

Watched the match in the pub tonight and there was not one point where i could think of anything postive in our display. villa as the away team played more like the home team. gomes shouldnt of let the shot in, but then dawson just let young drive past him, dawson was shocking tonight, lennon was industrious but as per usual no final ball, our best player on the pitch was giovani who ran with pace at defenders and had two or three shots on goal more than i saw pav get in on goal. i agree with said comments above, get the pretty boys to get haircuts, no1 cares how you look, the fans care about your football skills, wow us with deft touches and superb finishing not your haircuts.
i was excited to hear jenas wasnt starting, but boy did he actually run his heart out all night. i think jenas, woodgate and giovanni can be the only ones who can actually hold their heads up high after another woeful performance in front of our own fans!
its ridiculous bottom of the league after 4 games, when we could realistically be topping the table if you take wins against boro and sunderland, the draw against chavski and a win tonight equals 10points!
running out of optimism, no doubt stoke will give us a run for our money at the weekend! and we'll be looking forward to cup runs!

I cannot believe some of the comments before.
Yes we were dreadful. Probably even worse than that.
But some of the remarks about individual players astound me.
I think Woodgate is one of the most talented centre backs in europe, let alone England. Yet today I thought he was a shadow of the normal bloke we are used to seeing.
Jenas adds so much to the team in my opinion that we look so lacking without his pace and workrate.
Huddlestone, while not playing particularly well can surely not be criticised of not running around the pitch trying to effect the game.
But my point is:
I definately do not want to start criticising Ramos as I am positive he is a fantastic manager.
However, after watching all the pre-season games and then the games in the league so far, does anyone know what formation we are going to play for the rest of the season?
If not then how can any of the players be comfortable in their roles and thus perform to the best of their ability?
