World Cup 2018: Does history tell us who will win in Russia?

Interesting stats but don't think you can write Brazil off just because they don't fall into the must be European category. They probably play more games in Europe than South America these days. They have the best keepers too so doing well in the other categories.

Just listening to a podcast discussing the line up for tunisia game (cahill vs maguire etc) and I'm actually feeling excited now for the first time now. Still six days away.

Add one more criterion "Have a capable manager". Oh crumbs, nobody is going to win the world cup.
I wonder if they realised how much they ballsed up after publishing this article. I know it's a bit of fun, but jeez the logic is flawed all over.

How is he going to fix the World Cup? It would need the involvement of all the players and staff, to all come together and agree, for some reason, to fix it all so Russia win. Either that or he'll somehow be able to get all the referees and officials to somehow throw all the matches in such a way that the billions of people watching and the players involved aren't suspicious, with all the cameras and technology involved such as VAR. It would be the biggest conspiracy in sport needing the agreement of thousands of people, with none of them leaking it to the press. They would all need to come together and for some bizarre reason, throw the tournament for the benefit of Russia.

So:
A) All the players and staff are involved to throw the tournament.
B) All the match officials are involved to throw the tournament.
C) Nothing will happen and it will be a normal World Cup.

Which of the above do you think is most likely?

It's up there with thinking the moon landings to be faked. Only a complete fucking moron would believe in it. It would need the agreement of so many people, none of which having the urge to leak it.

Would you stop with such a logical and cogent response, it really is pointless.

He fixed the draw to get them the eaisest group ever, them getting the fucking tournament and the hockey league so his team could win. If you dont think he’ll try fix this, your nuts.

How did he fix the draw? The host automatically gets seeded #1 in group A. They're supposed to have an easy group.

Just seen this on BBC website

World Cup assistant referees have been told to keep their flag down for tight offside calls to enable VAR to make the correct decision, says Fifa referees committee chairman Pierluigi Collina.

Russia 2018 will be the first World Cup to use the video assistant referee system.

"If you see some assistant referee not raising the flag it's not because he's making mistakes," said Collina.

"It's because he's respected the instruction to keep the flag down."

Italian former referee Collina was speaking at the World Cup referees media briefing on Tuesday.

"They were told to keep the flag down when there is a tight offside incident and there could be a very promising attack or a goal-scoring opportunity because if the assistant referee raises the flag then everything is finished," he said.

"If the assistant referee keeps the flag down and the play goes on and maybe a goal comes at the end, there is a chance to review the goal using the technology."

Can see the logic in this. Just hope if they play on and it is offside they add the time back on!

Just to be clear, the delay is only going to happen if a scoring chance is imminent. For example if a cross is sent in and the striker is offside then the AR should keep the flag down for the extra second or two to see if the ball will be headed in.

Here's a good example from MLS. The first video on the page shows an example of the AR waiting to raise the flag and then the referee waiting until the ball crossed the goal line to blow the whistle.
