Sadly seemed inevitable after the initial injury, and then from what he's said since about the damage left and his recovery.

Poor guy. Think I'll just repost what I said earlier in the thread at the time of the injury:

Terrible news. Whether you think he was ultimately good enough or not, I personally think you can say he was a pretty major figure for that time where the club was in a bit of a rut and needed a change in culture and attitude. Mason earned a place with 100% commitment, putting everything he had into the 90 mins, and at times running through brick walls for the team. One of those who in those early stages symbolised what Poch was trying to instill. He, however briefly, did his bit and played a part.

Awful news. Helped bring my love of football/Spurs back along with Kane. Glad he has his health at least as it didn't look good at the time.

Would be great if THFC could find a role for him. Good player but more importantly seemed a very good lad.

I know this isn't the time or place but I still think Cahill did a number on him.

I think it came in the aftermath from the Battle of the Bridge and that Cahill went in on purpose, to injure him but not to force him into early retirement.

Really gutted for him, not really had much luck in his career considering the vast potential he showed as a youngster.

Seems like a very bright kid with a good footballing brain, hope he uses it in getting his football badges and becomes a coach.

Hopefully back with Tottenham, you don't know where that could lead.

Sums up all of what I feel.

Mason and Kane came along at the time I needed them most in my relationship with Spurs. After Sherwood and all that was going on it was Kane and Mason that with Poch reminded me how much I loved the club. I was gutted when we sold Mason, would have loved him to stick around. The guy has never really had a break, plagued by injuries at every step. Displayed such passion and heart for the club, and for that I'll always be grateful. Hopefully the club can find a role for him.

Gutted to read this news. We watched him in the youth team, alongside Pritchard, Bentaleb, Caulker, Luongo, Townsend, Coulthirst and Winks, and Kane obviously and he was the best of that group at that age. And luckily I was there for the Forest game as well.

Looking back In the thread I also see he had a kid before Christmas. Hopefully he earned enough in his career to be safe from danger

A real tragedy and a loss to the game of a player who embodied everything good about it...let's hope he stays involved and preferably with Spurs.

Terribly sad news - I'm genuinely gutted for him and his family. As others have said, I'm almost certain that Levy will find a role for him at the club as he always will be part of the Spurs family.
He's recently become a father for the first time so I'm hoping his little one will soften the blow slightly and provide an alternative focus in the short term.

Surely he must have massive insurance? Anyone have an inkling how that works?

Feel so bad for the guy. A really good player and an even better human being.

THE FULL STATEMENT

I can confirm that following specialist medical advice I am having to retire from playing professional football.

I have worked tirelessly in order to be able to return to the pitch. Unfortunately, having taken expert medical advice I now have no option but to retire due to the risks involved given the nature of my injury.

I am and always will be eternally grateful for the incredible network of people around me who have helped me to recover from what was a life-threatening injury in January 2017.
Thank you to my amazing fiancé, Rachel, who has been by my side and lived every single day with me since the injury, helping to give me the strength I’ve needed no matter how tough things got. We are so lucky to have now become the proud parents of our perfect baby boy George.

To my Mum, Dad, sisters, and all of my family and close friends, thank you for everything. Despite how tough it’s been and the challenges I’ve faced along the way you’ve all been there supporting me and words will never truly do justice to how grateful I am for your love and support.

I would like to thank everyone at Hull City, especially The Doc Mark Waller and all of the medical team for helping me to recover. Thank you to the Chairman and the board for being so patient with my recovery and sticking by me.

There are too many names to mention when it comes to talking about Tottenham Hotspur but I would like to say a special thank you to John McDermott, the Gaffer and everybody at Spurs for helping me to achieve my dreams.

I am so proud to have come through the ranks to play for my club, the club I love. To have had the honour of captaining the team fills me with immense pride. Thank you to all of my teammates over the years, there are too many to mention, it’s been a privilege to play alongside you all.

Finally, representing my country is an honour that nobody can ever take away from me and something that I am so proud to have achieved.

I’m retiring from the game with my head held high having done everything in my power over these past 13 months to have given myself every opportunity to return to the pitch.
I feel content knowing that I dedicated my life to be able to play football at the highest level, hard work really does pay off!

I love the game, I always will and I am excited to see where football will take me next.

Having a baby will, I'm sure, help him cope. You can't be sad when your baby is smiling at you. Presumably he will get an payout from insurance too, which should help a bit.

Made me cry.
All the best Ryan
and I hope football can offer you something hopefully at Spurs.
He has much to offer young players in terms of attitude and effort
and no little skill and achievement.
One of those that got away.

He also did a similar challenge on Mertersaker in the charity shield. He was lucky at the time to come out of it unscathed.

No idea if it's feasible but it'd be incredible if one of the first games at NWHL could be a testimonial for Mason.

It's not easy but I'm going with the positive angle, he will lead a perfectly normal life after what was a life threatening injury and for that we should put out hands together.
That said, it is a sickening shame he can no longer do what he loves, heartbreaking.

So sad but obviously the right decision.

He always struck me as a thoughtful, intelligent person as well as a very good footballer. I’m absolutely sure he can make another good career for himself in football, either as a pundit or on the coaching side, preferably with Spurs, which is what I hope for.

But I’m sure we all wish him luck with whatever he chooses. And thanks for all he gave us.

Gutted to hear about Mason. I'm sure he'll be back at Spurs, someday.

In his statement, he mentions playing and captaining 'his club' - where did those awful rumours come from that he was a Chelsea fan? Not that it matters now anyway...

Love ya, Ryan x
