This is looking to be the worst in a long list of poorly thought out loans on our behalf...

It was a good idea in theory, right league (less physical, more emphasis on technique and passing) well coached club, and ealier in the season I think they played with 1 up top, meaning Mason could fit the system, but lately they seem to have switched to a 442. Mason is not a CM and not striker. Surprised and disappointed he's not making the bench though.

Ironically Toulouse would have been a perfect fit. They lack creativity, always play a 4141 and Mason could have slotted right into Sissoko's attacking role.

Shame.

I looked round a bit and Lorient also run a Lorient B side.

Mason played the first 64 minutes against Pontivy in the CFA (3rd or 4th tier of French football), on 16 February. To judge by the lineup order he was playing as a CM.

Can't see he has played in any of the Lorient B or A matches since.

Unless he's been injured for the last couple of weeks, it looks like they want tp play 442 (ie have no need for a no 10) and don't fancy him as a cm - which will be another bad choice of loan for him by the club (and same problem as with Fredericks at Brentford, they don't play a formation which requires that type of player - in Fredericks playing a narrow diamond midfield so diid't need a winger). Seems on the face of it a total cockup - and such a basic one not to match club playing style and player.

Unbelievable if true.

Feel sorry for him cause this could mean it is his end here. Unlucky. Alone in France at this age. Not getting game time...

let's see what happens in the summer...

CFA is the 4th level in France (B teams cannot go higher)

I don't think Mason's position is the problem : Alain Traoré wasn't really a striker before joining Lorient, and now he plays up front.
Corgnet is a n°10 and he plays as a winger. So I think Mason could also play as a winger.

The thing is he wasn't even on the bench yesterday for the Cup, while Abu (the yougster from City) started the game. I don't think Gourcuff wanted him, and I don't think he will play. And it's really unusual for French teams to get foreigns youngsters on loan.

Everything you say worries me then. Mason is not a winger for sure - a no. 10, and he has played as a CM for u21's this year, but nowhere else that I know of

We REALLY need to look at this sort of thing in more detail. Someone at the club has made a mistake letting him go there, he might as well be back training with us if he's not gonna get any games.

We need to probe the clubs that we're loaning players to and find out how they plan to use our players before we agree to loan them.

I thought he wasnt getting any games at all!

Here's hoping he comes back and does a 'Livermore' where he's not shined on loan but becomes a squad player
Nah he has been playing in the in the Division 3 or league 2 equivalent in france which tbh is closer to non league

He has been decent on loan in the championship it was last year he had no time tbh he has the potential to be a great player and time is ticking but alot of world class players didnt play top league footy untill their mid twenties but we need bleed him in imo

I believe in this guy. I think till the end of the season he will be a first team starter.

Played to date for Lorient B in the CFA (4th tier of French football) :

16/02/13 64 mins Pontivy (A) Lost 0-2
23/02/13 75 mins Bordeaux B (H) Lost 1-3
02/03/13 Full game Plabennec (A) Won 2-0
09/03/13 Full game Fontenay-le-Comte (H) Drew 0-0

No appearances to date for the first team.

So, going on a loan to an inferior side, where the coaches will not be as good as at Spurs and almost certainly not the players either. Might learn a bit about how French players deal with thiings, but cannot think of too many other advantages to this loan.

I assume the loan could be cancelled by mutual consent between clubs?

See Jon de Souza's post above :
Presumably we can recall him if they don't want him any more?
Nope. Not from an international loan. They're treated as transfers from one transfer window to the next.

Problem then becomes that we cannot register him to play in UK - even for u 21 matches let alone loan him out again I think, but Spurs X1 matchyes probably ok.....except we have not played many of those this season !
