Right now? Nothing. He provides an extra body in training. He is not blocking anyone, and he does not appear to be progressing himself.

I think Poch told him he would not play last summer, and Carroll opted to stay and try to fight for a spot. It has not worked out for him, and I expect he will welcome a move in January.

He also signed a new contract after the window closed, reckon he'll be sold for a decent amount either next month or the summer.

Any chance that Carrol stayed because we need a squad and you can't fill a squad with top class players earning £70k a week.

Not sure where the hate comes from with him, he's never let us down when called upon, clearly is technically gifted but is a little small for a Poch team.

Looks like he knows his place and will step up if needed, he should be applauded.

There was never any hate. He was just never ever good enough and we messed about with him for far too long

Winks impressed in a fraction of TC's game time

Lovely to see they all got a good reception, Daws particuarly, love that guy...

this was posted last week by a mate on a Sheffield Wednesday message board that I pop into fairly often.

I was at a corporate thing at Hull City Tarrrrgers last night and it involved a Q&A session with Michael Dawson and Mike Phelan. I have to say that both came across really well, Phelan seems to be the coach turned manager that players love, he explains his decisions, thinks about the impact on players etc, a genuinely nice and funny bloke who knows the game inside out. He talked a lot about Ferguson and why he was the best, but not everything he said about him was complimentary, that he could be brutal, had no thought to consequences of his actions until his latter years and a couple of other bits I can't recall. It was clear that Phelan is probably one of the very few people who could actually work under the circumstances that are around Hull at the moment.

Dawson, just came over brilliantly, the sort of pro you need in a dressing room, very much that voice of experience and someone to lift the younger players. He talked of how much getting relegated hurt him, how they needed to get straight back up (not much gloating about the final thank God) and how this season is difficult but the team are playing well. He was gutted about Palace's equaliser on Saturday as he thought he should have got to the header that the Palace striker buried.

Anyway, a few questions from the sponsors, nowt controversial and a bit of time mingling and a bit of decent food later, I end up chatting to Dawson so I asked him about the Fessi sending off at their place, what did he think of it. He just said "it was a foul, a yellow card and I thought I was getting sent off. I put my hands up because I was expecting the ref to wave the card at me". He then went on to add that our fans were amazing at Wembley but he felt they battered us and should have won comfortably. I asked him which away grounds he hates playing at and his answer was Burnley and Palace (Burnley most) because the fans are mental and are right on you, and he thought Burnley have really got something going and will stay up comfortably.
The other thing he said is that after nearly 10 years at Spurs he can't wait to play at White Hart Lane for the last time and he's hoping that their fans give him a good reception.

Anyway, that's as much as I remember, just to say I was impressed with Dawson, just a decent, honest guy. It's a bit weird being at a corporate do for a club that not only you don't support, but one that stopped the team you do support getting promoted, but in its way it was quite enjoyable and there were a few insights into how difficult it is for their playing staff under the current regime.

I know there's a lot of stuff there superfluous to Daws coming back to The Lane, but I thought I'd leave it all in ... just because.

the stuff about the 'Fessi sending off' is from when Dawson went in hard and late on Fernando Forestieri during a Hull/Wednesday match last year, only to have the ref botch it fantastically and send off the latter. and Wembley, of course, is last year's Championship playoff final.

I had to work Wednesday and wasn't able to see it; but I trust that Daws got a strong reception, as well. 100% class. 100% Spurs.

The sad thing about Mason's move is that it is not working out. Hull fans think he is a poor.

Really hoping he can hit form and show people the player he can be. When he first came into our side he clearly improved it.

Looked like him and Bentaleb would be our midfield for the next five years,

Daws definitely did get a great reception. Probably the biggest cheer of the night when his name was read out where I was.

"Hate" may be a strong choice of words, but Carroll seemed to be the penultimate scapegoat for us getting blown out by Dortmund last season. Has caught a lot of flak between now and then, even despite not playing.

Personally, I've always liked his creativity, and I loved Mason's grit, but we've now reached a point such that you can see why Poch preferred Winks to both of them. Winks covers both of the other lads' best assets (Carroll had a bit more creativity, but was also much less careful with the ball), and then some. That he's also considerably younger doesn't hurt.

I see Mason tweeted his thanks, did Dawson do the same ? Maybe he's not on twitter ?

Of course Daws isn't on Twitter. Neither is Scott Parker, for that matter. Two of my favourites this era and both incredibly similar people who know that its all a load of conflated bollocks.

yup. I remember Daws doing one of those quickfire 20 questions thingies, and he was asked 'twitter or facebook' [brief pause] 'neither'.

... just one of those little things, ya know ... confirmation that this is a bloke worth liking - even if I've never met him and never likely will.

I'd disagree, i'd suggest that Winks didn't get the run in the starting eleven that Mason did and hasn't had the opportunity to be a part of a weak showing by the team yet. TC had a run for us in Europe a couple of years back and the most common phrase was "He needs to bulk up" as the oppo had figured out he weighed the same as kitchen roll. When Winks finds himself running out at the start for a few weeks on the bounce and doesn't produce something magic, he'll get the same ribbing Mason and Steve Rogers got/get for their efforts i expect.

It's the same with all players trying to establish themselves in the first team; no-one is on form for 38 games a season and our fans can be pretty ruthless if you turn up with anything but your a-game.

He was in our starting 11 in a season we finished 5th in the league, he's a very decent player, he should be bossing that Hull team, I'm not sure what's going wrong for him..

And where I was. I gave him a loud cheer because I've always loved the guy. Totally Tottenham through and through. Always gave 100% and a really nice guy with it. Just a shame he wasn't a good fit for the current way of playing. Also that he just missed out on his testimonial.

Winks didn't produce anything ’magic' against Hull just moved the ball very well, worked hard, never hid from wanting the ball and competed well in the middle of the park

He didn't just bounce around the pitch like TC does marking space and chasing shadows

You can tell that a player like Winks can/could make a difference. I never got that with TC and I go way back to when I saw him playing away for us v Carlisle in the League Cup years and years ago
