    • Newcastle defender reportedly completed medical this morning
    • Would be Spurs' fourth signing of the summer

The Newcatle United defender Sébastien Bassong is believed to be close to completing a move to Tottenham Hotspur. According to reports, Bassong completed a medical at the London club this morning and should be announced as manager Harry Redknapp's fourth signing of the summer later today.

Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to sign the Frenchman, particularly as it appears likely Spurs will be without two centre-halves for the opening match of the season against Liverpool on 16 August. Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson are both major injury doubts while there no guarantees Ledley King will be ready in time either.

"I like Bassong, he is a young player with a good future and a good central defender," said Redknapp of the player last week, and it now appears he has got his man. The fee is believed to be in the region of £10m.

Bassong, who would join the former Sheffield United defenders Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker as well as the striker Peter Crouch in joining Spurs this summer, signed for Newcastle from Metz last summer. He was one of the few players who shone for the north-east club during their disastrous previous season, when they were relegated to the Championship.

The 23-year-old was recently fined two weeks wages for refusing to travel to Scotland for a friendly against Dundee.

    Good news if true.

Hopefully he'll be as good as the other players we've signed from Newcastle . . .

Good news, however isn't he suspended for 1st two games of the season.
  3. whitelightwhiteheat
Why does everyone keep saying he's suspended for the first two games?! It's in every thread, it gets answered, and people still keep saying!
  4. fazthfc
Hope he is officially signed after the Newcastle game. If Mawspurs knows that he will be available to play if he signs after 8 tomorrow then surely the club know?
  5. newbie
He can be signed and not registered surley ? its only when the transfer is faxed across to the FA.
  6. sebo_sek

Sorry mate, didn't mean to sound ratty, it's just there's been so many threads on this the same thing keeps getting asked, not anybody's fault that's just the way of it.

The answer is that he missed one game at the end of last season, so has one game remaining of the ban. This could be sorted if he's still at Newcastle at the weekend, as the Championship starts then. So he would then be free to play for us against Liverpool.

This could be the scenario that is currently taking place :)
  14. whitelightwhiteheat
Apart from Alan Shearer, probably. Sir Les was quality though, more so for Newcastle than for us in terms of goalscoring but he was a favourite of mine in his time with us.
  15. aylespur
Thanks for clearing that up. Lets hope all goes well with this deal then.

Have not paid enough attention to Newcastle and Bassong last season. Is Bassong quick in movement and in thought? If so, he should make a good partner for King if he's fit for the start of the season.

If King is still not fit enough, Corluka would probably be the main CB, but he would have to be much more aware and alert than he has been, to help Bassong fit in quickly in central defence.

I still hope Dervite can be given more chances to develop into the first team. The mistakes he made are not worse than Dawson's - who has been making them for 2-3 seasons now.

Err you forgot one my friend. The last young and up and coming centre back we bought from Newcastle was a certain Kevin Scott..... The worst player (equal with Jason Cundy) to ever wear our famous colours.

Lets hope he isn't another Kevin Scott
