    • Redknapp 'interested' in signing Newcastle defender
    • Denies a bid has been made for the Frenchman

Harry Redknapp has admitted that he would like to bring in the Newcastle centre-back Sébastien Bassong but denied that Tottenham have already lodged a bid for the 23-year-old Frenchman.

"He is a player that I was interested in," said Redknapp, speaking after his side's friendly defeat to South China. "I like Bassong, he is a young player with a good future and a good central defender."

However, Redknapp suggested that reports Newcastle have rejected a £10m bid from the north London club were premature: "I don't think we have made an offer, as far as I know. I am sure the chairman has not made an offer."

Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson are likely to miss the start of the season and doubts remain over Ledley King's ability to participate fully, leaving Redknapp short of central defensive options. The friendly against South China saw Redknapp experiment further up the pitch, though, with the substitute Robbie Keane being introduced in midfield.

"I brought him on at half-time as JJ [Jermaine Jenas] had a bit of an injury and I didn't want to push him too far," said Redknapp. "Robbie came on, he played in there, but he is a good player and he can play several positions. He is always enthusiastic and he loves to play wherever he is asked to play."

Spurs now head back to England following a busy few weeks but Redknapp believes the intense schedule will prove beneficial for the players . "It has been tough but we go home now and have a break this week. Even next week in the last friendly before the start of the season I won't take chances with many of the players because a lot have international games before the Liverpool game [on Sunday week]," he said.

"I changed things around an awful lot [today] and gave the ones who haven't played a game a chance. It was a good experience for the younger players as they had not played on this trip."

Dont think hes all that, to be honest! Not worth more than 5 mil!

I'm not sure about Bassong, but I'm sure that we need to worry about our central defence. Is anyone else really worried about this dodgy hernia injury Woodgate has picked up? I for one am feeling less than confident about starting a new season without our three best central defenders. With the kind of schedule we've got lined up for August/September an unsettled defence could be very costly to us.

Unless we bring in someone of real quality I think I'd stick Corluka and Chimbonda in the centre with Hutton and Ekotto on each side for the Liverpool game.

Don't worry. Corluka will sort out all our central problems in defence..!

    Spot on.
Apart from the central pairing for the Liverpool game!

That is not a solution, unless of course we want to forfeit our opening game of the season. Someone of decent quality needs to be brought in a.s.a.p.
We can´t rely on King anymore, his time has come.
We need a solid, consistent central pairing and if that is at the expense of King. So be it. He´s not even played any pre-season.

Woodgate is great but hernias are dodgey injuries and we can´t risk waiting for him to get fit. That just leaves Daws and Corluka. And maybe Hudd. Anything else is horrible at the back!

i dont think we necessarily need to buy a first choice centre half King and Woody, supported by Micky Daws with Charlie Chalk as back up back up.... works for me... a solid squad player would do... i know he wasnt great last year but i still think Ben Haim could defo do a job for us... could also at fullback when needed which would mean we can sell Chimbo to Blackburn for a couple of million.

personally think that would be an improvement to our squad (please note... not first team but squad!)

I agree, we cant have a first team player as Woody and King will always be frist choice.. our defence last year was excellent.

Even with Chimbo gone, we still have naughton, hutton and corluka, so I dont think we need another centre back

I have a sneaking suspicion that Ledley will play against Liverpool. I wouldn't be too concerned with him and Corluka at CB in the first game.

I would because we could all see that the King's pace is gone. He will get slaughtered by Liverpool's quick passing.

Chimbo is a far more competent CB than Hudd, so Corluka Chimbo for me.

I dont understand how some people on here think we dont need to buy a 1st team CB? Obviously if Leds and Wood was 100% fit and playing week in, week out, it would be amazing!

I feel we cant rely on Ledley anymore! To me Woodgate doesnt play to his full potential beacuse of his history of injuries and probably has that on his mind when going in for a 50/50 tackle! we cant go into a new season with so much hope with these problems! If we dont buy a quality CB, its gonna be an easy excuse if we mess up!

I think Corluka could be a decent CB, but hes gonna need a solid partner next to him on a regular basis!
