Someone on the New Stadium thread said that Levy's having lockable seats put in the new ground so that we're ready for safe standing when it's introduced.

Momentum is building and I really don't know what the objection is, if they wanted to return to the old style terraces I would understand but safe standing prevents you even from falling onto the person in front of you.

Only a matter of time that this is commonplace in all stadiums bar those on Merseyside

West Brom have tested the water, an opening gambit. We’ve future-proofed the new stadium and Celtic have successfully installed safe standing. It’s going to happen. But there’s a process. 10 years from now we’ll have forgotten what all the fuss was about.

Wasn't there a petition to sign on the Gov website? We should all look it up and sign it and get other teams supporters to do the same.
I can fully understand the Liverpool supporters who lost loved ones maybe objecting but.........
1) supporters won't be caged in now unlike Hillsborough. That wasn't a one-off occurrence either.
2) Safe standing has seatbacks in between each row of supporters so should negate the crushing of old days.

Although regarding #2 we had waist high barriers set at 10-12 rows up the terracing to stop the crush going all the way down to pitch side.

Hillsborough was all about overcrowding and poor crowd control by the police wasn't it? At least I don't think it could solely be blamed on standing/terraces. I see no problem with safe standing and it could probably be a bit unsafer and still be safe. Strict admissions so there is no overcrowding would do as much for safety as making everyone sit down.

I read we had similar problems there in 1981 semi-final but there were exits available at each side of that stand and the police let the fans onto the pitch to ease the crush. Also read the 2 previous semis to Liverpool's at Hillborough were similar.

Not caging people in like animals makes it safer for a start.
Listening to H&J earlier on and the guest they had on, didn't catch his name, said West Brom may well have been rejected because the government will only speak to football as one voice. Currently the Football league and the FA are in favour and the Premier league is involved in a consultation exercise amongst it's clubs, when they come to a decision, hopefully in favour, then an approach to government must be taken much more seriously and can't be rejected out of hand.

I was at at Hillsborough in 81. As far as I could see the only difference between our experience and the tragedy a few years later was luck

Had we had an incompetent totally inexperienced match commander on duty the day we played Wolves and had they opened gates to ease the crush outside the ground I’ve no doubt it would have be our supporters who lost their lives and not Liverpool’s

The Leppings Lane End was a disaster waiting to happen (with it’s central entry point and the 2 on either end) and the circumstances surrounding the 89 semi unfortunately created a perfect storm.

I think safe standing will happen in this country (and so it should) but it could take a good few years yet before it does

Everyone stands anyway now, don't they? The irony is that it's unsafe to stand in the current stadiums but everyone does and football has a safer solution which the government rejects. A decision made by someone who has probably never stepped inside a football ground in their life

As others have said, Hillsborough had very little to do with the fact that people were standing and far more to do with the fact that everyone was penned in and the police were completely incompetent and let far too many people in.

IMO the current situation where you have people standing in areas that are designed for seating is far more dangerous than safe-standing would be. If there's a surge in the current environment you'll more than likely go head over heals tumbling down the row in front of you because all there is is a knee-high seat to stop you falling.
