Saido Berahino top of Tottenham's January hit list as Mauricio Pochettino admits club are in the hunt for back-up striker
  • Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham would like to sign another striker
  • Saido Berahino fits the bill; Pochettino said of rumours: 'Maybe it's true'
  • West Brom board member Richard Garlick says Berahino isn't for sale
  • Andros Townsend could leave Tottenham in January transfer window
Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Tottenham will try to sign a back-up striker for Harry Kane and West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino fits the bill.

West Brom rejected four bids from Tottenham during the summer, including a £23million offer on deadline day, as the transfer saga ended with Berahino reluctantly staying at The Hawthorns.

The 22-year-old threatened to go on strike in a furious Twitter post aimed at chairman Jeremy Peace after his move to White Hart Lane collapsed, but Tottenham could try again when the transfer window opens next month.

When asked about Berahino on Thursday, Pochettino gave a wry smile, and insisted: 'We never speak in public about another club's player. We need to show respect. Of course we are interested in different players — that is our job.

'I'm very happy with my squad but always in every position you can improve. We have offensive players who can play like Harry. There is Son (Heung-min) or (Nacer) Chadli or Clinton (N'Jie) — they can play like a striker.

'But maybe it's true. I recognise they are not specifically strikers so maybe we will work to try to find such a player who we can add in the next transfer window or in the summer to try to help the team. We are trying to follow players now but it is very difficult. It is important we find someone who is very specific.'

Wider interest in Berahino prompted West Brom board member Richard Garlick to declare him not for sale on Thursday, though the club are bracing themselves for bids with Spurs, who visit Albion on Saturday, among those circling.

And Garlick admitted the club are powerless to stop a bidding war for their prized asset. 'We can't stop people if they want to bid, that is up to them. The jungle drums are not sounding,' he said. 'There is always going to be speculation in the press but we have not had any discussions or been approached. The club's position remains unchanged. He is not a player who we have identified as one we want to move on.'

Translation, oh shit Peace really screwed the pooch here, I pray we get 2 interested parties to get Saido's value up to £16m

That ship has sailed for me, let them have him on their bench. and watch his value soar...

Still think we should get him. The whole of this place was creaming itself when we thought we were getting him, and there was an almighty meltdown when we didn't. He's the same player now, we may just get him a bit cheaper. Not too many other options too.

I genuinely wonder why it is that Poch seems to be so fixated on him, especially considering all the hard work that has been put into culling the squad of malcontents.

Didn't suit us then doesn't suit us now IMO.

Over priced/rated take your pick.
Agree, would consider him if he was cheaper, but I'm not really a huge fan of his on top of the fact he really seems unfit this season and would probably take quite a big of conditioning for him to be up to Poch's fitness standards. I really don't see why we seem to be so fixated on him (which we might well not be). If we are only looking at young, PL proven forwards, I would prefer we go for Perez.

Where are all the Berahino lovers gone!! Cmon, he was the new pelle in the last window! Now he's not good enough! Poch has shown he can get it right with a player, and he's obviously looking for someone to play off the last defender and use his pace, and play different positions. The fact he's young and English also ticks boxes. I'm sure there has been a lot of diligence done in the lad. Don't take this seasons form as any marker after what happend in the summer

I think everyone was so desperate for a striker that he was built up as some sort of Messiah, (purely because it looked as though he was coming) and people were seeing what they wanted to see in him. Rather then Jermaine Defoe 2.0.

When they don't sell him for big bucks, I wonder how long it is before Peace comes out slamming us again for ruining the player?

So you're saying he doesn't suit us when its clear Poch thinks he does suit us.

No matter if some feel he isn't suited, I think Poch has done enough recently to earn people's trust regarding his own judgement. The individual improvements we've seen under him and of course the collective.

If he thinks he's suitable, that should be enough for people.

I think Berahino is suited personally however what I am weary about is the fact that Poch gave the okay for Southampton to purchase Osvaldo when everyone knew he was an absolute nutter, for me that dented his copy book a little.

SB has demonstrated many times that he has the capability to become a top player. He is wasting his and Tony Pulis time at West Brom

The sooner we can bring him to WHL and to work with Poch and our talented young squad the better

Poch used to play with Osvaldo, so knew him better than anyone (and perhaps why he felt he uniquely might be able to tame him).

As for Berahino, I really can't see us going for another WF like him, now that Son has settled so quickly at RWF and Lamela has come on so much at LWF.

We need a CF, and that's not Berahino

If we're looking for an alternative to Kane I can see why Poch likes Berahino. He has pace, awareness and is a good finisher. However, there are many things Kane does which Berahino won't. We use Kane a lot to hold the ball up and relieve pressure for starters. I can't see Berahino doing that and I also can't see him running himself into the ground to press the opposition back line. I would have thought we would be looking for a player who brings more Kane-like qualities to the table, especially if we were to lose Kane for any length of time.

I agree with this and would like to think that they are scouting for just that type of player also as I don't think Josh Onomah is anywhere near ready to cover for HK just yet

If this story is true and Poch is desperate to bring Berahino in then our manager has currently displayed more than enough results wise to be backed by us and DL 100% and our chairman should be moving heaven & earth to bring him in this January

Poch also brought in Stambouli who's already gone and Fazio who seems to have been scrapped after a season. As has already been said, he also took Ozvaldo to Southampton which was a mess. He's very far from infallible.

About 70% of all new signings flop.

Having only 2 or 3 major misses is actually a pretty good record.
